Finished the story. We have two new names, but both only appear in the last chapter, so I don’t think it is important to add them to the proper noun list.
Chapter17:
Ha, another one of my favorites. Chapter with the kid again. I still like their interactions. I do wonder, though, what was in the mystery box they buried. And did he get the mystery box himself from some other person?
Chapter18:
Oh shit, wrong fake letter… unexpected double letter envelope puts a big wrench into his plans. Another quick idea of him, extorting the target to smuggle the slightly wrong letter back to the target. Plus, he gets some extra cash (not that he needs it ^^).
But 米沢 is also not dumb… He should have just left when he saw he took the letter, and not stay around and watch him longer. Most of the pages were suitably わくわく and quite fun to read.
Not a big fan of the ending. Feels like it just fizzled out. All that posing and monologuing of 木崎 really didn’t work for me.
According to the あとがき, I was pretty spot on when I said the flashback in a previous chapter reminded me of religious imagery like heaven and hell. He apparently read some of the Old Testament before the book.
The book was okay. I think I wouldn’t have read it if it wasn’t for the club. I was expecting something slightly different after reading the あらすじ and voting for it
Just finished. I quite liked this book. I found the story engaging enough that it never felt boring (except the one week that as just straight monologue). I also liked the ending. Though I was hoping he would use his pocket knife at the last minute.
Overall I found the difficulty was spot on. I didn’t need to look much up, and I could mostly read it at a reasonable pace, faster than many of the previous books. The amount of reading each week was also just right for me and how much spare time I have to read nowadays.
