観客は皆、学園側が用意した長椅子に座って観戦しているのだが、ただ一人だけ床に正座している者がいる。
モニカにチェスを前提に婚約を申し込み、速攻で振られたロベルト・ヴィンケル君である。
生徒会役員席と教員席の二つの長椅子に挟まれるようにして正座をしている彼の背中には「反省中」と書かれた紙が貼られていた。
モニカは驚いたが、動揺はしなかった。
不思議と心が凪いでいる。あんなにも向き合うことが恐ろしかったバーニーが、今は全然怖くない。
バーニーに許してもらうことを、友と呼ばれることを、認めてもらうことを──それら全てを諦めた瞬間、モニカの胸に刺さっていた楔の一つが確かに消えてなくなったのだ。

性格は温厚で、やや優柔不断の学者然とした男だ。
だが、そのピットマンが──否、ピットマンの姿を借りたその人物は、口を三日月のように吊り上げて、残虐な笑みをその顔に刻む。
I’ve been thinking while this conversation was going on… for what purpose would whoever he is pretend to be Pitman? He doesn’t seem to have done anything yet. I guess the obvious thing would be “to kill Felix”. Seems to be a fairly dumb way though, considering that he’s travelling and meeting with people who know the real Pitman.
Also damn, Bernie, why the heck would you confront someone potentially extremely dangerous while you are alone with them?

Yep.
第二王子に害を及ぼそうという侵入者を看過するわけにはいかない。なんとしても、この帝国の魔術師の目的を阻止しなくては。
I mean, very brave and all, but it’s not like you have much a choice right now except “fight for your life” anyway. This is an adult who’s likely very adept at killing people.
たちまちモニカの足元が淡く発光し、モニカ一人を閉じ込める水の球体が生まれる。
Someone is pretty adept at fighting magicians, keeping them from chanting, hm? Pity that this one doesn’t need to.
魔力耐性の高い竜の唯一の弱点は眉間──それは、竜化の魔術も変わらないらしい。
“Let’s invent a spell that copies not just the dragon’s scales, but also its weakness” seems a bit dumb to be honest… but then again, I guess having this as a (from an evolutionary perspective) completely unnecessary weakpoint for dragons is a bit dumb in itself 
But Monica is adept at dragon hunting, and it fits plot-wise, so I’ll allow it!
侵入者を捕らえたモニカの正体は、すぐに知れ渡ることだろう。そうすれば、もうモニカはセレンディア学園にはいられなくなる。
I mean, freshly saved, hopefully pretty sobered up from how he was treated by Monica earlier, and knowing that what he would be messing with is an official mission to protect a prince of his country - one would hope that he’s willing to keep her secret and pretend that he’s the one who beat up that assassin.
「ユージン・ピットマンは、何者かと入れ替わっていたようです。僕が正体を見破ったら、襲いかかってきたので返り討ちにしました。モニカ・ノートン嬢は、偶然そのタイミングで控え室に来てしまい、巻き込まれた被害者です」
Yup, yup. That’s what happened.
「貴女なんて、一生僕に感謝してればいいんです」
That’s a sliiiiightly more healthy way of making her think about you, yes. And one you could’ve had much easier before 
えぇっ!? と声をあげそうになったグレンの口をニールが素早く塞いだ。最近のニールは、グレンの口を塞ぐ手際がどんどん良くなっている気がする。
「モニカ、その上着は、誰の？」
「えっと、シリル様が貸してくれて……」

暗殺者は自分がモニカの無詠唱魔術で攻撃されたことに気づいていないだろうから、バーニーが口裏を合わせてくれるなら、モニカはまだこの学園生活を続けられるだろう。
Oh, right - the assassin is probably going to be interviewed by people who shouldn’t know about Monica. I didn’t even think about that potential problem.
「茶会で毒を盛られて、木材の倒壊に巻き込まれて、今回は侵入者と遭遇……充実した学園生活ね」
「うっ……」
お茶会の毒殺未遂はともかく、後者二つはフェリクスの暗殺絡みである。
護衛者として現場に居合わせるのは当然のことなのだが、傍から見たら、壮絶に運が悪いように見えるだろう。
I mean, technically yes, although it’s not like the falling lumber incident had anything to do with protecting the prince either. It was pure coincidence that Monica was there.
What a nice chapter. As expected, Monica crushed Bernie completely and utterly in chess and then goes on to save him from the assassin… only to be unexpectedly helped by him. Not that it excuses anything that he has done so far. It was especially nice to see a) Monica being completely over him and b) seeing his distress when he realizes that he no longer has any power over her.
Also, Lana continues to be an excellent friend. (And I’m surprised we didn’t see Isabelle visit the chess tournament.)
We’re not quite at the halfway mark, we’ve had an assassin already, and it feels like the most important part of the Bernie subplot is done for now. I guess the remainder of this volume will be the school festival with at least one other assassin then?
