「なんか、色々本格的っすね。あのボードは何に使うんすか？」
そう言ってグレンが指さしたのは、選手用の席と観客席の間に設置されている、大きめのボードだ。
At first I thought he meant the playing board on the table 
「えぇ、えぇ、とても優秀な生徒なのですよ。ただ、少々頭が固いのが難点でしてね。本来なら大将に据えるべき実力なのですが、本人が頑なに『自分は一年だから先鋒だ』と言ってきかない。いやはや、ミネルヴァとセレンディア学園の先鋒には、少々申し訳ないことをしましたねぇ」
Haha. Well, we do have another vanguard who by all rights should’ve been general, so…
「いやはや、いやはや、あのお嬢さんも可哀想にねぇ。女子ながらに、そこそこできるようですが、流石にうちのエースが相手では、些か荷が重いでしょうよ」
そう言って院の教師はチラチラとボイド教諭の厳つい顔を見る。
ボイド教諭は戦場にいるかのような険しい顔で、ボソリと低く呟いた。
「先に謝る」
「はてさて、謝るとは何をですか？ もしかして、あの女子生徒があまりに弱すぎて相手にならないことを、ですかな？」
「モニカ・ノートンを、先鋒にしたことだ」
I like him! A lot!
And boy, does that other teacher talk a lot of trash.
教員席では院のレディング教諭が、真っ青な顔で「二週間？ は？ 二週間んんん？」とブツブツ呟いており、…
…ミネルヴァの席ではバーニー・ジョーンズが、ボードではなくモニカを暗い目で睨みつけている
Just be happy that you’re not going to play against her. She’d crush you.
(Although I have the feeling that he’ll pull some strings to play against her anyway.)
この大会において最も高レベルなその試合は、驚くほど短時間で終わり、それから一時間近く時間を空けて、中堅、大将は院が勝利を収めた。

「協奏曲はどちらかが突出していても成立しない。二者の実力が拮抗していてこそ更なる高みへ至り、美しき調べが生まれるのだよ。この試合、相手は非常に強敵だった。だからこそ、ノートン嬢は己の実力を遺憾なく発揮できたのだろう。つまりはノートン嬢が今まで真の力を発揮できずにいたのは我々の力不足だ。あまり僻むものではない」

「自分と、チェスを前提に婚約していただきたいっ！」
I… I don’t even know what to say here. “Chess match ends in a proposal” was definitely not on my bingo sheet.
I guess the man really, really wants to play more chess with her.

「モニカ嬢！ 話はまだ……！」
モニカの後を追おうとしたロベルトの両肩に、ポンと手が置かれた。
右肩に手を置いているのはフェリクス、左肩に手を置いているのはシリルである。
Ah. The other love triangle.
それは炎の矢だった。成人の腕ぐらいの太さの矢が五本。モニカの前方に浮かび上がっている。
Uh-oh. Time for yet another confrontation.
「あぁ、もしかして正体を隠して、学生生活のやり直しを？ 名門中の名門であるセレンディア学園で学生ごっこだなんて、贅沢なお遊びですね？ おまけに男を複数侍らせて恋愛ごっこだなんて……ははっ、随分と楽しそうじゃないですか」
He’s clearly hostile. Mind magic is forbidden. His absence would be noted in a few hours. What to do?
(I really need to go to sleep instead of continuing to read, but… how could I stop here?)
「随分と雰囲気が変わりましたね？ 名前を聞くまでは貴女かもしれないなんて、これっぽっちも思わなかった。随分と色気づいたじゃありませんか。まともに人と会話もできない癖に。一丁前にお洒落？」
I really wonder why Louis didn’t get her another name in the first place for her undercover mission.
「貴女みたいな狡い人なんて、すぐに誰からも見向きもされなくなるに決まってる！」
Says the one who wasn’t even remotely considered for the Seven Sages and is destined to fade into obscurity 
堪えていた涙が一気に溢れそうになった、その時。
「ちょっと待ちなさい！」
Isabelle? Considering she’s the only one in the school who actually knows Monica’s identity. Or Lana? I do hope it’s Isabelle though, if only because she’s capable and has a certain standing.
ハッと顔を上げれば、誰かがこちらに駆け寄ってくるのが見える。綺麗に整えた髪を乱し、スカートの裾を大きく翻して駆けつけたのはラナだ。
It’s Lana!
「名乗りもせずに失礼しました。ミネルヴァ代表のバーニー・ジョーンズと申します。モニカとは古い知り合いでして。昔話に花を咲かせていたら、彼女、懐かしさのあまり感極まって涙ぐんでしまって」
Oh, huh. I definitely expected him to give Monica’s identity away. Maybe he’s waiting to first find out who she is to Monica?
「貴方って人を見る目が無いのね。そのセンスが無くて顔のサイズに合ってない、だっっっさい眼鏡を作り直したらいかが？」
「ねぇ、そろそろ正直に言ったらいかが？ ……貴方、モニカに嫉妬してるんでしょ」
Oh, nice, right to the heart of the matter. And just from this conversation, without knowing what exactly he’s jealous of? Sharp.
バーニーの笑みはどんどん崩れていった。そして、剝がれ落ちた笑顔の仮面の下、露わになるのは強い怒りと憎悪。
Okay, he might reveal her identity after all… and Monica will get another co-conspirator in Lana. But what then?
バーニーがラナを嘲笑った瞬間、モニカは考えるよりも早く、口を開いていた。
「バーニー!!」
滅多にないモニカの大声に、ラナとバーニーは驚いた顔でモニカを見る。
モニカは思考のまとまらぬまま、それでも必死で声を絞り出した。
「わたしの友達を、悪く言うなら……わたし、バーニーのこと、許せなくなる」
So she can be angry on behalf of her friends!
「今日のわたし……ちょっとだけ、強いの」
Not just a little. Well done, Monica!

──そんな彼女を傷つけて、踏みにじってやったのは自分なのだと。
七賢人に選ばれた天才少女が、泣きじゃくりながら自分に許しを乞う姿に、彼は暗い愉悦を抱いていた。
And she just told you that she won’t wish for anything from you again, hmm?
バーニーは早足で廊下を歩き、ミネルヴァの引率教諭であるピットマンの姿を探す。
Haha. He wants to lose against her in chess, hmm?
「セレンディア学園、負けちゃったの？ 残念ね」
「えぇ、でも、モニカ・ノートン嬢は健闘しましたよ」
「ふぅん？ あの子、チェスの才能もあったんだ」
チェスの才能も？
Is he a bit senile and mixed up the names, or did he figure it out?
Okay, and here we are. This confrontation actually ended better than I thought it would. Not sure why he didn’t unmask Monica in front of Lana though. Monica is using a different name, so it seems reasonable that Lana doesn’t know her true identity, and “Do you even know who she is? She has been lying to you!” seems like a better way to potentially destroy that friendship than the vague drivel he was spouting.
Either way, having Lana stand up for Monica, then Monica first standing up for Lana and then even for herself was great. She seems to finally have to made a little peace with the fact that she cannot and should not expect anything from Bernie anymore, least of all “forgiveness”.
And I’m looking forward to Monica wiping the chess board with him next chapter. The fool has no idea what he just signed up for.
edit: Also, much later (but without any new information about this matter) I’m finding myself thinking back to this chapter and I’m wondering: Does he really believe the things that he says? In the prologue I wasn’t sure and half-assumed he only says that stuff to hurt her, but here (especially when he warns Lana) it really seems like he says what he’s thinking.
