男子生徒達に囲まれているのは、最近編入したばかりの小柄な女子生徒だ。
名前は、モニカ・エヴァレット──通称〈無言のエヴァレット〉。
Oh, a Monica at Minerva story, but told from a male student’s perspective? I wonder if it’s the friend that she mentioned.
男子生徒の一人が窓辺にいた蜘蛛をつまみあげ、モニカの顔に近づけた。
「おい、誰かこいつの口をこじ開けろよ！ 口の中にコレを突っ込んでやる！ そしたら流石に悲鳴ぐらいあげるだろ！」
Great, we’re starting with some Monica bullying :>
At least it’s in the past… and will probably be short-lived.
そのことに密かに驚いていると、モニカは聞き捨てならない言葉を続けた。
「蜘蛛を、助けて、くれて」
Oh my god, Monica.
「でも、わたしの口に入れたら、蜘蛛が、可哀想だから……あなたが、蜘蛛を助けてくれて、良かったと、思います」
I mean, she got a point there. Not a good point, mind you, but it’s a point!
モニカは目を丸くしてバーニーの手を見ていた。
そして、ハッとしたように制服のポケットを押さえる。
「あの、わたし、お金は、あんまり、持ってない……です」
…
モニカを助けた日から、バーニーはモニカの世話を焼くようになり、モニカもバーニーを頼るようになった。

それでもバーニーはその事実から目を逸らし、モニカの世話を焼き続けた。
きっと彼は無意識に、モニカが孤立することを望んでいた。
モニカが孤立すればするだけ、自分を頼ってくれるから。
そうすれば、頼りがいのある優等生でいられたから。
…meh. But I guess at least he’s not doing anything actively to isolate her, and he is taking good care of her - just not taking the extra step to help stop the bullying.
ミネルヴァに通い始めて三年が経つバーニーは、もう中級魔術は一通り使えていたし、上級魔術も幾つか使えるようになっていた。
なにより彼は学年で唯一、短縮詠唱を習得している。故に、実技訓練において彼は敵なしだった。
I remember Monica saying that they drifted apart after Monica learnt chantless magic, and while there might be misunderstandings… I can see Bernie being hit hard by that. He enjoys Monica looking up to him, and he probably takes a lot of pride in being first place in his year in magic, and then suddenly that awkward girl doesn’t just take “first place”, but does it so decisively that it’s impossible for him to ever compete.
モニカは魔術式の理解度が極めて高いので、きっと魔力操作さえ覚えれば、すぐに自分に追いつくはずだとバーニーは確信していた。
Okay, or maybe not, if he’s already anticipating being overtaken without showing any bad feelings about it. I’d be happy to be wrong with what I said earlier!
「そうだ、人前で声を発するのが苦手なら、詠唱を減らせばいいんです」
Haha. I guess Monica took this advice to its ultimate conclusion 
「ふん、当然でしょう。何と言っても、僕は将来七賢人になる男ですから」
Oh my. I wonder if that actually did work out in the present, and we just haven’t heard of it yet?
自分の輝かしい未来への道は開けている。バーニーはそう信じて疑わなかった。
……この時は、まだ。
Welp. Probably not, then. Insult to injury…
モニカが無言で指を一振りすると、水は小さな蛇に姿を変える。
Okay, at this point she’s really just showing off
Side note - I love that she feels like being looked at because she is speaking is too scary, so she does something utterly impossible instead and thinks that will somehow draw less attention?!
僅かに風を起こすだけの初級魔術とて、きちんとした手順で魔術式を計算し、詠唱をして魔力を編み上げなくては起動すらしないのだ。
もし、そんな複雑な魔術式の最適解を一瞬で導きだすことができたら、確かに無詠唱で魔術を行使できるかもしれない。
And another side note: I wonder what role the incantation actually plays if “calculating the magical formula” and “weaving the magical energy” are other separate things. If “deriving the optimal solution instantly” can replace the incantation… I guess the incanation somehow helps to find that solution or somehow forgoes the need for the actual solution?
And what’s the calculation actually used for - do you just need to think it? Does it change how you “weave the magical energy”? Does it somehow change the incanation?
The author is just giving us enough information so I start thinking about stuff like that 
その事実をバーニーは絶望とともに嚙み締める。
称賛の眼差しを向けられるモニカに対し、バーニーが感じたのは暗い怒りと嫉妬心。
バーニーがいなければ、クラスで一人ぼっちのくせに！
バーニーがいなければ、何もできないくせに！
酷く裏切られたような気持ちでバーニーは奥歯を嚙み締めた。
眼鏡の奥で、その目を嫉妬心に濁らせながら。
Aw, man. Guess I wasn’t wrong after all. Still wish I was, though.
モニカはラザフォード教授から直々に指導を受けることになり、通常授業には殆ど顔を出さなくなった。
Considering how badly she deals with attention… that might have been a best case scenario for her at that time. Only one teacher and probably 1:1 lessons.
特に話題となったのは、ミネルヴァで最も凶悪と言われている問題児を、モニカが実戦訓練で無詠唱魔術を使って、僅か数秒で制圧したことだ

(Just kidding; Louis seems far too polished to be known that way.)
自分がこんなに苦しんでいるのはモニカのせいだ。モニカがいたから、自分はおかしくなってしまった。全部全部モニカが悪い。
（モニカさえいなければ、僕の人生は完璧だったのに！）
Okay, dial it back a little, please?
Looks like there were no misunderstandings on Monica’s side when she talked about him earlier; he really, really could not deal with her being so much better than him. Seems like there is little chance of them becoming friends again unless he’s reasonably successful in the present and/or has had some kind of ephiphany. I wonder if he will part of this volume later?
And I wonder how much “I did something amazing and lost a friend because of that” traumatized Monica.
なんていい気分だろう。その顔をもっと歪めてやりたい、とバーニーは暗く笑う。

「僕にお礼？ ははっ、それって嫌味ですか？ 貴女は僕のことなんて、内心見下していたんでしょう？」
Ah, right; that is what she said back then mentioned Bernie.
I wonder if he really thinks that, or if it’s just him wanting to hurt her.
「あぁ、七賢人なのに、なんてみっともないんでしょう。とても七賢人とは思えない。貴女なんて、人のいない山小屋にでも引きこもっているのがお似合いだ」
You! Was it your fault that Monica became a hermit?
Welp. And… that was how Monica’s great feat and the proud day she became one of the Seven Sages happened. Well played. What a dark prologue.
I cannot wait to return to a more confident Monica surrounded by at least some friends in the present.
