Ruri Dragon 🐲 Week 12

My first ever book club book. Thank you guys for the great work. I was able to add a lot of useful words and expressions to my Anki.
Also, I hope I will get base vocab for this manga series down. So I can read it more comfortably.

Though it varies based on the series, but that tends to happen around the end of the second to beginning of the third volume, considering average manga sizes and all.

Wow, it’s actually over and I managed to get through it all. I’m kinda impressed with myself, although I made a lot of mistakes here and there (par for the course in the learning process tbf) so thanks @Gorbit99 for taking the time to correct pretty much everything I put down here. Ruri Dragon is really fun, but of course they had to leave it on a cliffhanger. Surely someday we can see the fallout of all of this. This last chapter drew me fully in which kinda sucks.

Anyway, I’ll probably take a break for a week or so before catching up with the next book club which starts…tomorrow? Oh, geez.

Chapter 6: It Can’t Be Helped

Pages 153-156

Yuka: It’s the rainy season…

Ruri: It’s terrible this month, the weather is giving me a headache.

Yuka: You’ve got a headache, are you okay?

Ruri: I’ll take some medicine. You seem calm? Atmospheric pressure or something…

Yuka: Yeah, I’m absolutely fine.

Ruri: I’m jealous…

Yuka: It’s sort of fresh.

Yuka: You’ve changed your look for the first time since coming to school.

Ruri: The blazer was heavy on my shoulders, so it feels refreshing.

Yuka: The vest suits you as well, like a casual high-school girl.

Ruri: I don’t really like that high-school girl thing very much.

Yuka: Ah, hey, how was the study meeting?

Ruri: It was fun. We all exchanged LINE’s.

Ruri: I’ll tell you about it after this.

Yuka: Can I also come this time?

Ruri: Eh…you didn’t come yesterday, so…

Ruri: I wonder what I should do…

Yuka: …Are you holding a grudge against me?

Student: It’s just like a decoration.

Student: Wah, the horns grew. Is that normal?

Student: I heard that girl breathed fire.

Student: Eh, isn’t she cute?

Ruri: At least don’t abbreviate it! You guys mess around too much.

Student: Hey, hey, Aoki…

Pages 157-160

Student: What really is a dragon,…are there any?

Yoshioka: Oh, come on. They’re not fantasy creatures.

Ruri: What the-You didn’t doubt it yesterday.

Yoshioka: Sure, but everyone’s tension has been rising.

Ruri: I mean, didn’t my Mum say dragons?

Ruri: You came, right? After that.

Yoshioka: Oh, I just waited there to hear it.

Yoshioka: I heard it from the person’s mouth themselves.

Ruri: That’s why it became this big investigation…

Ruri: [Mum…I’ve got that strange feeling again.]

Yoshioka: So, what is a dragon?

Student: Is it there? Seriously, what kind of girl are you?

Ruri: It doesn’t mean that I’ve met him, so I don’t know.

Student: What!? You won’t meet him!? Can’t you meet him…!?

Ruri: No, it’s not like that.

Yoshioka: Hey…there’s a lot going on with that.

Ruri: Will you touch my horns?

Ruri: You were asking if you could touch them the other day, right?

Ruri: It’s an apology for having burned your head.

Yoshioka: No, that’s a joke.

Yoshioka: Although…they’re more or less a girl’s.

Ruri: It’s okay around the horns.

Ruri: Thanks. For worrying about me.

Yoshioka: What…iron? It’s like iron. Strangely, it’s freezing cold.

Kashiro: He’s touching them a little!!

Yoshioka: No, Kashiro, Aoki said she’s okay with this…

Yoshioka: You were touching them the other day, right?

Student: Hey, Yoshioka, you’re touching those horns.

Student: They seem so cold.

Kashiro: It’s not that cold and it feels good…

Student: Can I touch them too!?

Pages 161-164

Student: Something’s changed in Ruri, hasn’t it?

Yuka: She was like that from the beginning.

Yuka: She’s not very good at just going ahead, and…

Yuka: …her ability to relate to people is pretty good. To tell you the truth…

Yuka: …Ruri likes people, so it would be best if she’s involved with everyone.

Student: But, the gathering of people touching the horns…is that okay?

Yuka: It’s fine, they’ll stop eventually.

Yuka: Those guys have such low awareness for that sort of thing.

Yuka: They quickly get carried away, which is why novices in social situations are like this…

Yuka: Lots of physical contact with the opposite sex is forbidden.

Yuka: You weren’t bad at dealing with boys.

Ruri: Are the horns…skin?

Yuka: Let’s have a cheerful discussion…

Yuka: Let’s eat lunch! What did you buy today?

Kashiro: Is it okay if we join in as well?

Kashiro: Is it alright if Maeda here joins us?

Maeda: No…I am…!

Maeda: If it’s Aoki…I’m a little…

Maeda: …um…I’ll eat with the others.

Pages 165-168

Ruri: Maybe I’m scary? It’s about me.

Kashiro: …It seems so. Sorry.

Kashiro: I wonder if I made you feel bad.

Ruri: No, I mean, I did breathe fire…it can’t be helped. I am sorry.

Kashiro: No. I should have checked first.

Kashiro: I did something bad to Maeda as well. Speaking of which…

Kashiro: How are you making fire now?

Kashiro: After what happened, we don’t see you breathe fire.

Ruri: I won’t let it out anymore.

Ruri: After what happened, I was practising every day and learned how to breath fire…so it’s safe.

Ruri: I can breath freely when I breathe fire, but when I can’t breathe fire, I can’t do it at all.

Ruri: I don’t understand the logic very well.

Kashiro: Well, it’s something to do with your blood. You’re okay now. That’s great!

Kashiro: Ah, hey, Yuka! Let’s exchange LINE’s!

Ruri: [Ah, you two didn’t interact yet.]

Kashiro: Yuka, is your name ‘Yuka’?

Yuka: Yeah, I thought everyone would laugh.

Yuka: It was Ruri’s idea.

Kashiro: Ahaha!! Ruri’s such a fool!

Kashiro: Once again, I think it’s a wonder that there’s a high school student with us that isn’t human.

Kashiro: Well, half-human, but…

Ruri: Well, there’s also people who think it’s scary and weird as well.

Ruri: I’m also scared.

Kashiro: Won’t you try to investigate with us?

Kashiro: About you!

Kashiro: If you don’t understand the logic of your fire-breathing, it’s good to check, right!?

Kashiro: If we understand, it would surely be easier for you as well.

Kashiro: It might also hold Maeda’s interest.

Kashiro: What seems more interesting than that!!?

Kashiro: Dragon research…!!

Pages 169-172

Yuka: My hair is terrible…

Mikura: Look, look, me too!!

Mikura: I wonder if it’s because of the rainy season.

Yuka: …No, it’s sort of like static electricity.

Yoshioka: Ahahahaha!! Ruri’s hair is awful!!

Ruri: [My third dragon power…Discharge.]

p153-156

She’s saying “You always have headaches, right(よね)? Are you ok?”

That’s past tense, she took some medicine.
平気 is also “ok” or “fine”. “Are you okay?”

“You look fresh”

p157-160

Here いるのか is basically “are they real” “do they exist?”
Not sure if you’ve got that, so making sure.

Notice the か, after the negative. This is “Aren’t they fantasy creatures”.
And just so it matches that better, the first part could be “That’s right, aren’t they fantasy creatures?”

This is still talking about the mom. “She came here, didn’t she?”

おあずけ食らって is a set phrase for “stg. has to wait”. If it the word choice doesn’t make any sense, you should be wary of a set phrase like that. In this case this is something like “That had to wait a bit”, talking about how the mom wanted to talk to Yoshioka.

やつ is another placeholder word for “thing”. There’s this great video I’ve seen about it not even that long ago. Basically means “What kind of thing [is it]?”

Here “It doesn’t mean that” is sticking to the literal meaning of the grammar pattern a bit too much. This is much closer to “I didn’t meet him (yet), therefore I don’t know”.

This is something like “Even though they are horns, they are still a girl’s”.

くらい has this “alternate” meaning of “only” or “just”. “If it’s just the horns, it should be fine”. Generally くらい can’t mean actual area around something. It’s more “around some quantity”.

何か is “somewhat”. “It’s somewhat like… iron?”
And the second part is closer to “it’s strangely cold”.

This is “Touching them is a bit [weird]”, as in “Hey, don’t go touching her horns”.

This だって is the “Yes, but” sort of だって. “Yes, but the cold(ness) feels good”

p161-164

Another “somehow” for なんか, “Ruri changed somewhat/somehow”

She’s saying “I’ll stop them”

Wrong kanji there. It’s 要審議, the whole thing is basically “We’ll need to talk about this”

p165-168

“How is the fire turning out?” → “How are things with your fire breathing?”

It’s important that this is “I won’t have spontaneous discharges anymore”

Not quite sure about that translation, this is something like:
“When it’s time to breathe fire, I can do it freely, but if it doesn’t want to come out, I can’t force it”

Kashiro: Won’t you try to investigate with us?
達 like this rarely means “with us”, rather “we”. “Don’t we want to try to investigate it” → “Let’s investigate it” or something

Hey folks, glad so many of you got through the manga and are happy that they participated! Currently I’m super too busy for it, but on Sunday I’ll do a proper “end of club” post. Thanks for being part of this, y’all!

Oh, and by the way, the next ABBC book club has started! Whether you want to gather more reading experience, want to feel good being able to read something with less struggle than Ruri Dragon, or just need your cuteness fix: ちいさな森のオオカミちゃん 🌳 Week 1 (The Wolf of the Small Forest Book Club) is here for you!

Alright, here’s the promised “end of club” post. A bit later than promised, but whew, this took quite a while:

Hello, just dropping by to say that I did finally finish reading this! Belated thanks to folks for making this so organized and for everyone who asked/answered questions and posted translations in the threads. This was my very first attempt at reading native material and having these resources and structure was immensely helpful! My copy of Cells at Work arrived yesterday so I’ll be (slowly) lurking on those threads next

Aaand I finished it. This chapter again went quite well I think, which is a big confidence boost for how my Japanese is progressing. There’s still a lot of the more casual abbreviations that stick me up from time to time, and I’d be lying if I said I got every kanji, but I’m pretty happy with how it went overall.

Congratulations on making it to the finish!

Thanks! I’m probably going to take tomorrow a bit easy then jump into catching up the on the current book club. I think there was enough content (especially chapter 2 just totally lost me in the dragon dialogue) that I struggled with that I feel like another absolute beginner level is the right level to go at.

But I want to push ahead  I finally bought the Genki paperback textbooks and to get the free shipping I added on the first 3 Japanese volumes of the Bookworm manga, so that’s my medium term goal to get to the stage of reading them. There’s very little okurigana in that but actually the first few pages of volume 1 weren’t too bad given I had watched the anime and sort of new what to expect and the subject matter is mostly listing a load of book topics which Genki’s vocab sections had me prepared for and the “Oh, I died, oh this is a dream, oh no, it’s another world stuff”, which 死ぬ, 夢 and 世界 are not the hardest kanji in the world :). But then after that it got harder.

Makes sense! I did at least 2 or 3 Absolute Beginner picks before jumping up to the next stages myself! Getting that confidence, and getting more exposure across multiple authors with different writing styles really helps in advancing along.

And as you can tell, I still pick up an ABBC pick here and there, even though I can read more difficult things, so it’s not like it’s the kind of club you have to drop forever once you “graduate”

Good to have a short term goal! They are the best!

Is it still a secret if everyone knows?

Also isn’t it technically not nekomimi this time around?

I can pretend. :upside_down_face:

You’re right. Kemonomimi I think would be the term here. :stuck_out_tongue:

Though to be honest, kemonomimi or not, it’s just too damn cute

Finally finished, a few months after the official completion :joy:

Just want to say thank you so much for organizing the club, and also to all the people who posted translations, questions, answers, and general discussion! This was my first manga and it was quite challenging. I don’t think I would have made it through without the help of this community (as you can see I only barely made it!).

Excited for more reading in the future
