This week’s chapter corresponds with the sixth episode of the anime, but was completely omitted from the fourth season’s recap, lacking even the quick transition version that chapter three got. (It also omits next week’s chapter, jumping straight from chapter four to chapter seven without a pause.)
This week’s chapter is a “learning stuff” chapter rather than a “going places” chapter, making it comparatively kinda wordy - even to the extent that there’s a whole paragraph of text on the title page. Doesn’t mean there won’t be any references, though, so here we go:
Page 75, 日本百名山 is a 1964 book by Japanese mountaineer Fukada Kyuka (English Wikipedia, Japanese Wikipedia). Because they’re selected by one guy (using his personal criteria of “grace, history and individuality”, and chosen only from mountains he’d climbed himself), there’s… some disagreement as to how good a list it is (most notably, the Chubu region, where he was born and raised, is hugely over-represented, while there’s very little of anything further west), but it’s certainly a well-known list, even to the extent that both Wikipedias have a navbox with the listing.
Page 80, the locations that Kaede lists as possible options are Mount Tanzawa, Chichibu, Yatsugatake, and Tanigawa-dake. Of those, Chichibu probably best fits the criterion of “nearby”, because it’s a single train ride away from Hanno, though it’s also possible that Kaede is actually referring to the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park rather than the city of Chichibu itself. Tanzawa, Yatsugatake and Tanigawa-dake are all on the 100 Mountains list, as are six peaks within Chichibu-Tama-Kai (one of which is Mount Kumotori, the highest peak in Tokyo Prefecture, which is right at the meeting point of Tokyo, Saitama and Yamanshi). But I digress.
Page 81, トマの耳 and オキの耳 are the two highest peaks of Tanigawa-dake, called 耳 supposedly because they resemble cat’s ears. トマ possibly comes from 手前, as it’s the nearer peak (presumably nearer to whoever named them at the time), while オキ comes from 奥. There’s a huge box full of text about Tanigawa-dake on this page, but for some reason it doesn’t address those labels on the main panel image. 一の倉沢 is here.
Love that description of the mountain, though - it’s super easy to climb for beginners… but you might die, so be careful, mmkay?
Kaede’s final suggestion, on Page 82, is Takao-san. Where’s that, then? Spoilers…
