This week’s chapter corresponds with the sixth episode of the anime, but was completely omitted from the fourth season’s recap, lacking even the quick transition version that chapter three got. (It also omits next week’s chapter, jumping straight from chapter four to chapter seven without a pause.)

This week’s chapter is a “learning stuff” chapter rather than a “going places” chapter, making it comparatively kinda wordy - even to the extent that there’s a whole paragraph of text on the title page. Doesn’t mean there won’t be any references, though, so here we go:

Page 75, 日本百名山 is a 1964 book by Japanese mountaineer Fukada Kyuka (English Wikipedia, Japanese Wikipedia). Because they’re selected by one guy (using his personal criteria of “grace, history and individuality”, and chosen only from mountains he’d climbed himself), there’s… some disagreement as to how good a list it is (most notably, the Chubu region, where he was born and raised, is hugely over-represented, while there’s very little of anything further west), but it’s certainly a well-known list, even to the extent that both Wikipedias have a navbox with the listing.

Page 80, the locations that Kaede lists as possible options are Mount Tanzawa, Chichibu, Yatsugatake, and Tanigawa-dake. Of those, Chichibu probably best fits the criterion of “nearby”, because it’s a single train ride away from Hanno, though it’s also possible that Kaede is actually referring to the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park rather than the city of Chichibu itself. Tanzawa, Yatsugatake and Tanigawa-dake are all on the 100 Mountains list, as are six peaks within Chichibu-Tama-Kai (one of which is Mount Kumotori, the highest peak in Tokyo Prefecture, which is right at the meeting point of Tokyo, Saitama and Yamanshi). But I digress.

Page 81, トマの耳 and オキの耳 are the two highest peaks of Tanigawa-dake, called 耳 supposedly because they resemble cat’s ears. トマ possibly comes from 手前, as it’s the nearer peak (presumably nearer to whoever named them at the time), while オキ comes from 奥. There’s a huge box full of text about Tanigawa-dake on this page, but for some reason it doesn’t address those labels on the main panel image. 一の倉沢 is here.

Love that description of the mountain, though - it’s super easy to climb for beginners… but you might die, so be careful, mmkay?

Kaede’s final suggestion, on Page 82, is Takao-san. Where’s that, then? Spoilers…

I really enjoyed this chapter. I can totally relate to Aoi 's anxiety of writing text messages/email and being jump scared by the phone. I’ve got to psych myself up the same way sometimes at work lol.

I did have to skip the big text squares as I was getting so lost in them. Excluding those, the chapter wasn’t too bad, the only thing I struggled with was when Kaede (I think that’s her name) started talking about finding dreams and stuff. Reading this has helped me to see that I struggle a bit when they start talking about abstract concepts; I’m glad to be aware of that as I can start giving those sentences extra focus.

Ooh some of the scanning wasn’t great this week in the Book Walker version, especially that small writing in the big text box about Tanigawadake!

Page 75 text box - is that 素晴らしく?

Indeed it is.

This was absolutely brutal to get through on Bookwalker lol thank you so much to whoever added all the kanji for this section into the vocab list

I love that Aoi was forced to choose the next mountain. I am loving watching her grow and get more experience! I feel like I say that every week haha

It’s been so fun reading a manga with a specific topic focus and starting to recognize the specialized vocabulary

Yeah I think brutal however you read that section but so brutal when the scan quality is so poor!

Ugh, that box. I got a headache from the blurry text and just gave up and lensed the parts I didn’t understand. But that mountain sounds really interesting. I’d like to climb it someday…but I wonder why more people died there than on Everest. Is there a catch? Or is that just sort of normal for mountains that get a lot of hikers?

Aoi was her usual loveable oddball self this chapter. Way to overthink a problem :joy:. And all that after Hinata just picked the closest “trail” she could stroll on without changing out of her school uniform last time.

According to wikipedia apparently lots of the deaths are because of rock climbing. Maybe rock climbing isn’t as common on Mt. Everest? I wonder if it also has to do with how people prepare to climb or yeah the number of total climbers is probably more on Tanigawa.

Week six, in which Hinata discovers her true calling as a loan shark.

That is fun!

I enjoy clicking on the map links you post and browsing photos. Thanks!

(I wrote this last week and just discovered it as an unposted draft, oops)

Me:

“So that’s Gunma prefecture and shin;# prefecture…”

TO GOOGLE MAPS! What prefectures border gunma?

Ahh, it’s 新潟県
