This is the main thread for reading the manga ヤマノススメ volume 1 together with the Beginner Book Club.
We’ll be reading together according to a weekly schedule, asking and answering questions in weekly threads, and we have a vocabulary sheet we’re building together to make this easier for everyone.
Aoi Yukimura is a quiet girl who prefers staying indoors and is afraid of heights. When she reunites with her childhood friend Hinata Kuraue, who is outgoing and loves mountaineering, they decide to climb a mountain together, in order to see a sunrise they saw together when they were younger. Along the way, they meet several other girls who are also interested in the outdoors, and begin a series of adventures on various mountains across Japan.
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

I’ve picked the start date based on the traditional one-week break following the end of the previous club, but I’m idly wondering how people are going at sourcing copies. Is there anyone who thinks they won’t be ready in two weeks and change?
Not sure I can delay the start by too much, because I’m gonna be leaving for a trip to Japan the day before the final week starts as it is.
Hmm. While that’s certainly an intriguing idea, and would definitely be easier than doing it myself, the list sorts either by freqency order for the whole volume, or by… gojuon order, maybe? on the per-page listing, and can’t be sorted in the order it actually appears in the text. (Also, no ability to change the definition that’s being used - for example, 目 is shown on the Kotoba listing as appearing later in the volume with the definition “eye; eyeball”, except that it’s also used in chapter titles as the ordinal number suffix sense. Can’t find the right page to tell whether or not it’s actually used as “eye”.)
I was undecided whether I’ll try and read along, and went to Kobo to check the price. Rather than listing a price, it reminded me that I already bought the volume (the first five actually; must have been a good sale at one point). Looks like I have no excuse not to read along (aside from reading too many other manga).
Yay, now I don’t have to self-advertise. (Your check will be in the mail.)
Yeah, the site’s less usable for generating in-order-per-dialogue-balloon vocabulary list to use with a book club, and is intended more for learning by frequency or by page in Mokuro’s extracted order.
I can generate a vocabulary sheet in the order of dialogue balloons, but it takes a little time (as I have to go through each page and tell my script the order of balloons). Or we can go the standard route and let readers populate it as we go. A fully-pre-populated sheet is less necessary at the BBC level than ABBC, but there’s also no furigana here.
There are certainly limitations to just running everything through tools! The advantage is the I’m able to process a large number of volumes of “mostly good” vocabulary frequency lists rather than a small handful of curated lists.
I had a similar experience a week or two ago. Not only finding I already owned it but own the first five volumes! Turns out it was a giveaway on Book Walker in June.
Each week’s material has its own thread (you can find a link to week one a few posts above). Discussion for the week’s reading goes into the associated weekly thread.
I think my best effort was asking for assistance when Bookwalker didn’t seem to want to allow me to purchase とんがり帽子のアトリエ volume 1, it would only let me read it. There was an obvious reason for this.
Welcome to the book clubs! ChristopherFritz has pointed you to the thread we are using for discussing week 1.
There will be a new thread for each week’s discussion. That helps to keep everything a bit more tidy and organised. It also makes it easier for people who have fallen behind schedule and are catching up to still be able to ask questions.
Belthazar will post a link to the new week’s thread each week, and you can also find the links in the table in the opening post of this thread. Enjoy reading!
I may have bought the same manga on Kindle JP that I already owned on Bookwalker and only realised when I went to update LearnNatively that I had read the entire book….
I saw the message in the book walker freebies thread and also happen to have the first 5 volumes from there! I’ve already read the first few pages so would love to continue with a group
