デンジはまた読んでる — denji’s reading thread

question

the bat devil just landed at a school i think

in the second to last panel the devil says ‘i let the person get away…!?’ and then it says something that i cant quite figure out, afaik クセに means though, and yet, even though, and things like that (unless it means something else entirely). but here i dont really know how to translate that in a way that makes sense

The bat-devil here is saying that the other devil let the girl escape (and is confused about why).

Xのくせに means “even though you’re an X”. It’s not very polite. Some dictionary example sentences of the pattern.

so here, correct me if im wrong, but i think 誰が~知るか means who knows? so denji here would be saying who knows if i saved this bastards life and stuff, but im not sure if 誰が and 知るか work that way when theres something in between them

誰が津助けたって? and 野郎の命なんざ知るか!are different sentences actually, so hes saying ‘who said i saves him? like i care about this guys stupid life!’ maybe

Yeah, I think you’ve got it. Also, suddenly I understand the title of the manga.

It’s pretty subtle, right?

I still don’t get it, maybe Part 2 will clear up the mystery for me.

horny shit

so denji and power had a deal that if denji freed her cat and stuff hed get to do some things, but im confused on why it looks like she said she was lying in the last panel? (on the next page it turns out shes wearing padding but denji doesnt react when she says ‘胸を揉ませるのは嘘だったんじゃが!’ so i think thats why im confused)

sorry none of my questions ever make sense lmao

“It was a lie, but” then she changed her mind since he worked hard (and helped her), so he gets 3 as a reward.

She basically just said it at first to get him to do what she wanted, but warmed up to him since he cared.

Also, devils are like that about deals.

first volume has the most dialogue hands down. I remember I had to rent 3 volumes at a time because I read them too quickly.

yet another example of power speaking so mf weird

It is kinda weird, but it’s also a fairly standard kind of manga weird, which is to say mostly it comes down to pronoun choices plus oddball copula plus some things which are leftovers from classical Japanese (and which still turn up in fossils like proverbs and in the dialogue in historical novels). Once you get used to it the next weird-speech-pattern manga character should be easier.

We’ve done ワシ and うぬ already. ら works as a pluralising suffix on various pronouns (I guess most commonly お前ら). よい is the old way to say いい (the adjective). (You can see that the modern form is irregular, because the negative is still よくない.) じゃろ is her way of saying だろう. おる is the same as いる (in standard it’s a keigo verb, but here it’s just old-fashioned speech pattern). Everything else is standard enough to be in dictionaries.

isnt 己 like a mostly archaic rude pronoun?

Yes, but not only that.
