Characters and concepts

Multiple races exist in Dungeon Meshi. The five major races are Tallmen/人間トールマン (baseline humans), Half-foot/ハーフ フット (Halflings), Dwarves, Gnomes and Elves, but a few other species also exist which we won’t get into here.

Party:
Laios - ライオス - tallman warrior

Falin - ファリン - tallman priest (well, wizard, technically)

Marcille - マルシル - elf wizard

Chilchuck - チルチャック - halffoot thief

Senshi - センシ - dwarf warrior/chef

I wanted to check in with ya’ll and ask: how’s it all going? I think even when I started I found 飯 while very wordy and dense fairly easy to follow, so curious if that’s holding true for everybody.

I found this chapter to be the easiest one so far, didn’t need that many look ups.
Needed more for the other ones, but as I’m using Mokuro, it doesn’t really bothers me so many not a super relevant opinion.
Really enjoying the story and the humor so far!

For me it’s pretty much the perfect level, challenging but not frustrating.

There were many non-jouyou (and incidentally non-WK) kanji this week. 紐 is one that came back a bunch and without furigana.

This chapter was definitely the easiest so far for me. I think because I like fantasy settings a lot, words like マンドレイク or バジリスク are easier than some of the words that I should know by now (just had 収穫(しゅうかく) fail in my reviews to read it later today…)

I think it helps that I still vaguely remember the anime because most of this chapter had me going "oh Marcille wants to be useful and is upset no one needs magic right now.

I only vaguely remembered (from the anime) the absolute mayhem マルシル unleashed with her giant bat scheme.

Also really enjoyed マルシル’s self-perception:

@Jintor I’m really enjoying it! Lots of lookups and a surprising number of non-jouyou kanji, but other than that quite easy to understand. … Which leads me to wonder, do you think you’ll run an offshoot club? If so I’ll definitely order the next few volumes soon.

I’m happy to run an offshoot club though i probably won’t do more vocab sheets for it as they take the majority of my time (and tbh i think everybody at this stage knows enough to look up). It won’t start until Dec at the earliest though.
