Characters and Concepts

Characters and concepts

Multiple races exist in Dungeon Meshi. The five major races are Tallmen/人間トールマン (baseline humans), Half-foot/ハーフ フット (Halflings), Dwarves, Gnomes and Elves, but a few other species also exist which we won’t get into here.

Party:
Laios - ライオス - tallman warrior

Falin - ファリン - tallman priest (well, wizard, technically)

Marcille - マルシル - elf wizard

Chilchuck - チルチャック - halffoot thief

Senshi - センシ - dwarf warrior/chef

Note that I’m not bothering to add words on diagrams and such (especially the nutrition ones) to the spreadsheet, but go ahead if it floats your boat - it’s useful for looking at nutritional information on food packaging if you are planning on getting some snacks, for instance

Some questions

P22

Think that’s it

I love how Senshi makes a point of explaining that his name means “Seeker” in Dwarvish, because in Japanese it means “soldier”. (Probably why noone else stops to explain what their names mean.)

It’s ぬっ. Is sound effect for suddenly appearing out of nowhere. [citation].

I’d go with Klaust or something.

Spend the brainpower. You’ll learn something. :stuck_out_tongue: For example: 花苔, イシクラゲ - Senshi literally tells Marceille it’s just regular algae.

The サカサイモ is fictional, mind, though the internet does suggest that if you want to try making this dish, you can substitute 長芋 easily enough. Even when they are fictional, though, it’s worth translating the names to work out the concepts that go into it - for example, サカサイモ is 逆さま plus 芋.

Ya made things weird by writing your reply inside the quote tags…

Thanks guys

And I couldn’t unpack this
Presumably せんのう is a dialect form, but I couldn’t find it on ichi.moe

Oh, missed that question. Reckon it’s しないの in Kansai-ben (as in, negative する plus sentence-ending の).

Also, it’s 感心. 感心しない.

Favourite new onomatopoeia for this week:

IMG_0921

(Chilchuk’s, not Marcille’s)

sound of honking of nose

(Though I couldn’t work out what the letter was after チーン before しなさい)

Trying to read page 22 after work today and the words are just swimming on the page. Think I’d better save it for another day.

Pretty sure that’s て: チーンてしなさい (blow your nose!)

Thought that scene was hilarious

I think this manga is going to make me feel hungry. Now I want to eat scorpion with mushroom and roots.

Really fun first chapter. マルシルs facial expressions are so funny, and a nice contrast to the other characters

p 23 question

Not sure if it’s because it’s late and my brain doesn’t work anymore, but what does チルチャック say on page 23?

ひょっとしなくても
おまえ前々から食べる機械伺ってただろう

I should know all the words, but I don’t get the meaning of the sentence at all

By any chance have you been waiting for ages to find an opportunity to eat (monsters)?

Though literally it’s more like “not by chance / you, for a long time / the chance to eat / have raised” i think?
