Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Avoid posting any information from later in the game than the current week’s reading. If it is necessary to doing so, it needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1”]).

Week 28

Interesting week! A lot happened.

Thought that it was cool that we reunited with Hammer again. Didn’t except the betrayal!

Also wasn’t expecting that Fei was Ido (especially since it was just established that Fei was Rakan, but that’s a different story I guess). Can’t remember the times where we saw Ido, if Fei was also in the party or where he was. That’s probably the kind of details that’s nice to watch out for when replaying the game.

Hilarious, how Ramsus just shut them Fei + Elly down and just remembered his mission afterwards, oh well xD

So how do we change disk now?
I’m on that screen and tried the Command / Disc option / Next disc but it keeps saying that it’s changing to disc 1 (I have tried putting disc 1 and 2 in the same folder)

Edit: ah, found the Load disc option in another menu, I’m all set for disc 2 now

Week 28 general

I’d completely lost track of Hammer after キスレブ so the way he suddenly becomes prominent again for ソラリス is jarring. Before this, was he hiding in the Yggdrasil somewhere and I couldn’t find him? In any case, his betrayal hurts ‘cause I’ve always liked that scrappy rat guy :frowning: The scene between him and Medina chokes me up, too. Some of the death scenes or even fake out death scenes in this game run a little thick with improbable melodrama, but this one in particular feels really well done.

I decided to do an internet investigation on whether or not Carbonite was a real thing after reading this and have concluded that no, it’s just a star wars reference!

Just when you start to feel sorry for Ramsus, you get a scene where he’s calling himself 俺様 and shooting down defenseless protagonists :sob:

I don’t think I ever understood why グラーフ shows up in the forest during that scene where Fei carries the injured Elly away. Is he spying? Why’s he transparent, to show that he’s hiding? Maybe it’s explained later and I just forgot.

Anyway we’re finally on Disc 2! We made it! Time for the visual novel portion of the game

on イド

Last week I was so close to saying “ok, it has to be obvious now that Fei is イド, right? I can talk about it? Because when Citan baits him out in the trap room he says the name!” But I’m glad I had second thoughts so it could stay a surprise for you :joy:

There’s foreshadowing for it throughout the game, here’s a couple of the bigger bits:

Last time we saw イド was in the underground ruins of ゼボイム, when Fei was in a coma. After this scene (Stole this screenshot from @eagleflo ) we find Fei suddenly awake again in the gear hanger, and he can’t remember how he got there.

Near the beginning of the game, イド attacks Bart in the desert. He shows up after we leave Fei losing a fight to a ゲブラー commander, ヴァンダーカム-- if you remember, the big bald guy with a purple cross tattoo on his face. Screenshot stolen from simias (I confess I haven’t been great about taking screenshots of significant moments). After this, Citan finds ヴァンダーカム, dead and the next time we see Fei, he’s imprisoned in キスレブ with no idea how he got there.

It happens to him often enough that it’s funny during a replay. Fei “I’m not sure how I got here” Fong Wong.

Also fun fact: イド is named for “id”, aka one of the three parts of the human psyche as proposed by Sigmund Freud. You can imagine that the other 2 personalities that make up Fei represent the “ego” and “superego”. I like these small details.

Oh it gets even more confusing! Don’t forget about this line:

Oh, so like this week but even more, great :joy: I didn’t even mind not having combat actually. The scenes are also super well made (that camera work, when Elly cries after seeing her mom dying!), much better than a VN!

Hahaha. I might be very naive I don’t know, I never saw it coming! I mean, bad guys appear from left and right and can be invisible or not, or big globby eyes, you never know what to expect. And Fei does seem to have weird behaviors (starting by killing his whole village) and unexplained memory losses, but the total of things I don’t know in this game was too big for me to connect the dots.
Appreciating the recap in any case

Disc 2! I should be catching up with everyone this weekend since I have extra time off for the holiday.
