Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!
Spoiler Courtesy
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Avoid posting any information from later in the game than the current week’s reading. If it is necessary to doing so, it needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1”]).

Quite a short week
A lot of reveals!
Fei looked so sad when he was told that his mom was already dead and his dad is dead too okay you go have a nice fight now! xD
Wait, I must have got this wrong… I kinda thought it was グラーフ who carries フェイ to the village. Hmmh. Well, no biggie, I’ll just make a mental note here…
Love Wiseman just showing up again and being like “oh shit you don’t know the story? My bad, let me tell you some important stuff”. I also enjoy his more formal dialogue, as much as it has me running for the dictionary from time to time. I do enjoy that フェイ was confused at one point and had to have シタン explain it to him
The mech fights were mostly more of the same, though I struggled a little with the Rico one. It went up to 6 rounds because I lost the first, and drew the second. I did win in the end though
Took a bit of extra time before the Rico fight to go and train some deathblows on Fei in the sewers because I still only had the SC and SSC deathblows on him. Managed to get the next two and good progress towards others
Not sure what to make of King’s outcome here. I always feel like there are scenes missing in this game, we keep jumping from place to place and every time I wonder “wait, what how did we get here? Why did we get here? Who are these people? Is he a ghost?”
I may have misunderstood but I thought his mum died in childbirth (or when he was very young at least) but the dad effectively disappeared while pursuing Graf? Was he confirmed dead at some point in the dialogue?
Interviewer: And how about Battling? (the minigame, not general combat)
Takahashi: We wanted to do a minigame that was completely different from the main game. But it wouldn’t have worked if we just used the same combat system, so we had to form a separate programming team, and we treated it like it was its own separate game.
Hiromichi: Yes, we put a lot of stuff in it to make it look like a standalone game. I think that took us about six months.
Takahashi: It was a year.
It’s honestly wild to me that they had a small team working on this minigame… all of its code is in its own “overlay”. Tetsuya Takahashi’s first project as a director, maybe resource allocation wasn’t his strong suit yet.
Oh ok it was in a different dialogue then. I forgot about that, it was like two months ago! I didn’t even remember who Graf was, I had to do an image search… I thought he was one of the Gebura guys.
“Ok team, we can code basic sound mixing or we can invest a year of dev time for a small team to implement a bad Tekken clone, what do we think?”
Imagine if they had invested that time into making the normal combat system good instead…
Funny you mention the sound mixing, this game has support for surround stereo (“Wide Stereo”), which not many games did back in the day or even now… (I’m playing with normal stereo, though.)
This is honestly kind of what I fear with the club setting… even with the increased pace we are playing at, this game will take a long time.
I get the feeling this game was meant to be played all the way through in a few consecutive sessions over a few weeks of calendar time. The writing has these movie-like cuts from one scene to another… it certainly isn’t written for attention-deficit audience in the first place, and our week-long pauses make all of us attention-deficit when it comes to this text. I’m taking a hell of a lot of screenshots and quickly reviewing them before each session.
We’re over halfway through cast introduction by this point, so at least from that point of view things won’t get much harder!
