Gameplay

Gameplay notes
  • Apparently on physical hardware the game tends to lockup during the first boss battle this week. Reducing disk speed apparently helps. If you are emulating, keep save states, and maybe try turning down disc speed if you sped it up in settings and are having problems
  • If you bring Citan with you into the first area you will be fighting the second boss with two people. It is not required to win, but you technically can. If you do, and you have trader card equip, you can get some good armor…but if you can win, do you need it?
  • For the forth boss, you will likely be pretty low on fuel/HP. If you do not attack the boss, it won’t start attacking you, You can (slowly…) heal back up and buff up.
Unique Missables
  • None
"FMVs”

None with VA.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Avoid posting any information from later in the game than the current week’s reading. If it is necessary to doing so, it needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1”]).

Week 32

Whew, what a week for vocabulary. I learned はりつけ (crucifixion), 昇華 (sublimation), and also the English word, sublimation. Does it seem odd that not 1, but 2 games I’ve been playing with wanikani clubs for months and months are using the word 方舟 regularly now? Trails has one, too.

Speaking of はりつけ, in terms of visuals this is it, the weirdest part of the game for me. One, why are the robots crucified and not the people? And two, giant チューチュ on a cross:

Also, this is silly but I saw the head and color on this guy and had a ‘who’s that Pokémon’ moment (it’s Noibat!).

So we’ve finally lost Elly. Boo. The info dump was a lot, too, I’d forgotten just how complicated it gets. It’s reasonable in a sense that a massive super computer system has so many parts and all those parts have their own names and functions and blah blah blah, but from a narrative perspective it’s… a bit messy, to say the least.

Still, the idea of people being organic components for “god”, aka just some computer trying to repair itself, really blew my mind as a kid. I still think it’s a very cool dystopian concept.

Week 32

Didn’t figure out the key to the first boss by myself, had to use the guide. I hadn’t noticed that he was losing life too with his attack.

For the second boos,

Haha great point :joy:
I just lost the fight very fast (had Citan in my team too so we were only two fighting). Watched an English replay and saw that they won the fight, was very confused. Especially since even if you win the fight, the dialog doesn’t change and is obviously written as if you just lost the fight.

Just realized that the pendant we see in the cut scenes, must be the pendant that Fei gave Elly. Don’t remember when Fei originally got it though?

Was wondering if we would ever hear more about Fei’s mom

Fei + Bart + Citan wasn’t a great team for the last bosses, because only Fei could heal up and didn’t know there would be two bosses in a row.
Had to redo from my last save when I lost to the second boss, a bit annoying cause I hadn’t saved after the long dialog and had to replay it. And even if I had, you still have to replay the dialog with Karen too.
Bought / equipped items for the other two so they could heal up. Well now I finally understand what those items are for, better late than never xD (also why are we advised to buy Frame 30 only when there seem to be more powerful one? something with the ratio fuel for HP?)
Managed to win with only Citan standing, oh well I’ll take it

Interesting! Haven’t encountered it outside of Xenogears.
Agreed that the gears and chuchu on the crosses looked a bit silly, I guess the game wanted to go all in on the religious references.

She’s kinda still here but with a cooler haircut? xD
The GLOOBS (I forgot how we call them) are definitely gone though :-o

Yeah it’s wild. Also poor Ramsus, just created for one purpose and then discarded. Then still manipulated after that.

more things

I think he says in that same scene that it was on him when he was dropped off at ラハン村 with amnesia. It was originally ソフィア/Sophia’s, but how it gets from Sophia to Fei over the course of 500 years hasn’t been explained yet.

Whoa, you’ve been doing gear fights without healing all this time? Kudos. I guess there aren’t a ton of situations before this back-to-back boss fight where you need it, but it’s handy to have just in case. And exactly yes to your parentheses question, 30 is considered the most balanced of the available options.

I do remember what we call them but GLOOBS is so much better. Good riddance to GLOOBS and their archaic speech patterns!! Though I do like the final conversation they have with カレルレン a lot. After all that high minded talk about being the most important people in the world he says, sorry dummies, you thought you were special but you’re just loser humans like the rest of us :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Yeah, he was completely played by ミャン and カレルレン. Another character who behaves terribly, but I can’t help but feel sorry for!

haha

Ah okay, I remembered that part but wasn’t sure that I hadn’t missed something else. Thanks!

Oops  Well Fei always had one but I never made the connection between the item and the ability, and then I also abused Elly’s Aero after at some point @eagleflo wrote down exactly what to equip (still, took me a while to find in which menu Aero was) so I guess I managed fine. Feels a bit funny to be so bad at a video game, I thought I was pretty good at those things, and I also thought I was okay at Japanese, this game is humbling me in a lot of ways  At least I did okay-ish with platforming :joy:

I see, thanks!

:joy: :joy:

Bit shorter this week

mostly steam of conscious notes… that was a long one.

wk32: sonic x~

Pretty sure we saw the embryo thing in the opening movie? Yep, nvm. They confirmed it right away.

“divine ark”…wonder if they may be misinterpreting that bit or not. Computers being sentient and biological is interesting, and not the last time Takahashi will explore the concept. Semi-flipping it so humans are “terminals” for “god” is interesting twist though!

Oh, so NOW the full party is here! Coulda used your help guys!

Elly overcoming her fear of her Gear バーラー and choosing to fight is interesting. If we hasn’t skipped over most of it it’d be more interesting though. I do wonder if there’s something more supernatural to her fear or if it’s just an extension of the “not in her nature to fight”? Also USE YOUR AERODS DANGIT. (late add: oooooh a subconcious reaction to the anima relic being a part for deus??)

I knew to unequip Elly before Hammer, but I forgot to unequip her gear!! ;_;

Glad they address Krellian letting them live–I wonder if it’s related to the anima/animus vessel thing. And not to let the old guys take over their bodies. He did not, however, let SBOOG live. Nice knowing ya suckers.

They assumed earlier that humans were decendant from survivors of the ship crash, but if the “mother” is of all humans…maybe they are all creations like Ramsus. The fact that Ether power comes from Zohar, which is a Deus system component, that sure seems so. (nvm, they confirmed this right away lol). And the “mother” is basically a parasite–and I guess the woman at the end of the opening movie. Whoohoo answers! Since they are all called “Myan” I guess that must have some kind of meaning? It’s really interesting she fully realizes she’s a product of her programming.

And it WAS a passenger ship. jfc interstellar government, do better. But what can I expect from someone dumb enough to create an interstellar sentient nuke.

So ALL of the party is special and had past lives? I may have misread that.

Um. how many humans are left now…? I really want to know if Billy’s orphans survived.

flash-run

oof. RiP Gear gear.

The party members that have gear バーラー are special in the same way as Elly in that they’re special components of deus, I think, but they don’t all have past lives. You have further explanations on that coming up :stuck_out_tongue:
