I think 山田 says something like - “I like 店長, she is really pretty and has lots of money”, in response to 店長 agreeing to have a smoke and watch B grade horror with her.

Ah, so she was teasing her, I just didn’t fully understand why. Thanks!
I read this as 店長 realizing that for 田山 this whole thing is all about “getting back” (due to her being いじっぱり) rather than actually trying to become less of a coward – she was blowing smoke to block the screen.
店長 then suggests that she would be content with just scaring the living daylights out of 佐々木 to get even.
Haha, what an awesome cameo to the other manga by 地主 – ロクレイ, a supernatural mystery comedy with a friendship between an exorcist and a ghost.
田山 feeling like she was “defeated” in the last chapter. The last thought bubble by 店長 is actually quite significant – she tries to prevent more problems for 佐々木 in the future…
My Japanese teacher in upper secondary school stressed to us that you’re literally never going to say 黙れ under any circumstances. Glad to see that 店長 and 田山 are on extremely good terms and can use even language like this…
At first I didn’t get what this panel was trying to convey – but then it dawned on me that 田山 is saying 佐々木君, something his boss would use, and sure enough this salaryman has a conditioned response.
Possibly the first time we got some stray English in this manga?
Oh cool! How is that manga? Would you recommend it?
I’ve only read a couple of chapters from the first volume but so far yes. The language used seems a bit more difficult than ヤニ吸う. The setting gives 地主 a bit more leeway for the comedy due to the supernatural premise. It is similarly character-focused.
According to my Japanese correspondent, she is dressed in traditional funeral clothes - white kimono, the thing in her hair - I.e. clothes to wear while making the journey to the next life. Sasaki is dressed as a monk reading the sutra, to help her get to the next life.

We’re reading chapter 23 this week. Enjoy!
A nice little story arc for this chapter
山田 casually wondering whether 佐々木 already kicked the bucket… grim.
Haha, touché.
Don’t know how but this panel really captures that “you gave it your all but for naught” energy.
Mini-んはは (#20) after realizing the dog can’t solve her problems (or can he…?)
She is already practicing her apologies here, preceded by a weak にこしゃん.
Well, that double hand clasp is a first! 佐々木 has appropriately WTF response.
Yeah, whoops! He (still) doesn’t know, so this reaction went quite far overboard.
Somehow appropriate that 前澤チーフ’s signature laugh is わははは.

This week, seems like we have 2 short chapters. Enjoy!
I’m trying to catch up, and struggled a little with the overall story:
Is the gist of this chapter that Tayama is making a game of training herself not be so scared (stemming from the dog incident), and that she’s keeping a “tally” against Sasaki … so that her frightening him is like like scoring points?
That’s how I understood it, roughly.
I think it’s just her competitive nature taking over for a bit. Her natural instinct to grab hold of 佐々木 in the previous chapter bothered her – she doesn’t want to be weak, she wants to be cooler than that. (佐々木 unwittingly made it worse by apologizing to her about bumping into her, when it was the other way around.)
The idea of frightening him to “pay back” to “get even” actually came from 店長, who just wants 山田 to get over it ASAP.

A longer chapter this week, but I personally really enjoyed it, and hope everyone else will
Haha, love the shocked faces 地主 draws.
The 7D chess is on full display here. The diagrams!
That’s a heavy ぽん.
I’m wondering why the child was so scared of 田山 – I guess she wears heavier makeup than usual? Or is it just the piercings?
(んはは #21!)
Amazing panel but the typo really screams to me. (I think it has been fixed in later chapters where the brand comes up?)
Perfectly captures how weird it can be to suddenly look even someone you know really well into eyes for a long time.
I can hear the 「なにっ」
Another んっはっはっはっ, bringing us to #22.
Sudden realization ahoy!
佐々木 is still so reserved, whereas 田山 really doesn’t mind.
I know this feeling well…
I’m still struggling with this realisation. On my first read through, I thought she was realising that 佐々木 was the original smoking salaryman, but at the end of the chapter she talks about him resembling that man so I ditched that interpretation.
I’ve read through it a few times now and I’m still missing something. Is she realising that she had feelings for the salaryman, that she now has feelings for 佐々木, or did 佐々木 somehow give away his feelings for her?
I’m thinking 佐々木 helped her see this core memory of hers from a new angle, highlighting how much that person and interaction helped her grow.
The operative word here is 憧れる, which has multiple translations: “to long for; to yearn after; to admire; to be attracted by” – missing from this list is “to have a crush on”, but it’s also used in that sense.
Some later pages (184-189) cast more light into this, basically 佐々木 admitting to himself that he has a similar {yearning / admiration / crush} on 山田 and how that can be a driving force in life – he of all people would know.
This chapter is capped off by 山田/田山 mulling over his words and being surprised that にぶすき of all people would have such an insightful and fresh take on how much that person came to mean to her.
(Of course にぶすき remains 鈍い in that he isn’t aware that it was him in all likelihood… we already know the shop had a different name and smoking place arrangements back in the day, but there’s also something more in later chapters. )
Thanks for the great explanation @eagleflo , that makes way more sense now!
Finally caught up this week. Great chapter
Again my problem with this manga is it makes smoking look too cool. That shot with the two of them holding their packets behind their backs was an incredible spread
