キッチン Home Thread (Intermediate Book Club)

My copy is also broken up into キッチン and 満月. It has an obvious break though, with a blank page, a title page for ムーンライト・シャドウ, and then another blank page before the story starts. Although looking more closely, it has the same thing for the 満月 section too.

I’m super torn about whether or not to join in this one or take a break. I’m still catching up on Haruhi and have a ton of Diagostini Nihonto magazine issues to read because they come out too fast… I may just hang out with the beginner club for light reading this round.

That’s so cute! I love the cover(s)

I myself got the banana one… do they differ in content at all?

I don’t think so.

I like the (what I assume are) たこさんウインナー tho

I think it was described as tulips before, but considering the title, this makes so much sense.

No, there a version with actual flowers on the cover.

Oh. My. God.

I straight up couldn’t decide if they were tulips or weiners.

Too many versions. That one is also quite pretty.

Comparing the two there’s a slight difference in shape, so maybe we do have both tulips and sausages here??

Maybe it’s a tako wiener plant?

I think most of us want to read Moonlight Shadow as well?

In any case I had a look through the book and had did some breakdowns. There’s 49 pages of text left, so I see 2 possibilities, if we do read it together.

Version 1! We go full throttle and increase the pace just a tad!

Week Start Date End Page End Phrase Pages
Week 11 Dec 14 160 スカートのすそをおぼえている。 16
Week 12 Dec 21 177 あんまりだと思う。 16
Week 13 Dec 28 193 The End 17

Advantage: We’ll be done before the New Year and go into it with a ‘clean slate’. (Possibly. The last week will end in January. Last Discord session will also be in the New Year.)
Disadvantage: We’ll be increasing the pace → People who celebrate the holidays might have less time to read and not be able to keep up.

Version 2! We… dont!

Week Start Date End Page End Phrase Pages
Week 11 Dec 14 159 年相応の顔をする。 14
Week 12 Dec 21 171 私は笑った。 12
Week 13 Dec 28 181 そして眠りについた。 11
Week 14 Jan 5 193 The End 12

Advantage: We relax the pace a bit → More time to prepare and enjoy the holidays for the people who celebrate.
Disadvantage: It’ll take longer to read. :man_shrugging:

I think I found good stopping points for both versions. What do you guys think? I wouldn’t mind either way.

Thinks to self: I don’t even know what I’m doing next week, I can’t plan that far ahead!
Probably just as well someone else is organising this book club.

Also, for all you tako wiener plant enthusiasts, I thought you might like to know that, underneath the black-on-cream outer wrapper of my hardcover version there lurks…

Drumroll

Even more of them

It’s only 3 more months! :scream: I guess we can postpone the decision another month? :stuck_out_tongue:

I do appreciate more pictures of the tako wiener plant. Thank you. :+1:

It could also be read as a “choose your own pace” thread? So that people who want to read ahead can just do so, those who want to take their time can as well, etc. In the meantime, the next book doesn’t get delayed another 3-4 weeks…

An option “We will not read Moonlight Shadow with the book club” got zero votes though, which means the next book should be postponed until this one is finished anyway?

I’m not sure. Most people voted they don’t care. I voted to decide later. If all people remaining at the end can read that part in a single sitting, why artificially delay the next book? (Especially since it would be a clean slate allowing more people to join). On the contrary, if we have a bunch of people still reading, but having trouble increasing the pace, then go with the slower option. :woman_shrugging: Again, I feel we should decide that once we get there.

It’s also possible to read it in parallel with the next book, like we will be doing with Haruhi still running while we read Kitchen.

TBH I was actually not too sure what to make of my poll… Wasn’t that clear to me either.

To add one more option, we could have a break of two weeks after Kitchen, so for the people who want to read Moonlight Shadow as well, there’d be a minimal overlap.

Currently I’m more leaning towards the “decide later” option because there are just so many possible ways of going forward - then we will also know who likes the writing style and wants to continue at all. Or jump in afresh maybe

The last week’s reading of Kitchen will start December 7th, so we might want to run the poll for the next book around end of October? And then see about Moonlight Shadow around end of November, I guess.

In any case, thanks @Belerith for looking into possible schedules! I will add have added them to the OP so we can use them in our decision later on.

Haha yeah, same for me. I figured the ‘don’t care faction’ should not count towards the decision since they basically add half their vote to either option, in which case ‘read together’ leads by one point. But I’m all for deciding when it’s a bit nearer, too. I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have a vague plan for that time.

Hi all…we introduce a passage from kitchen in our latest article about だ and です…:open_book:, jfyi :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know if you guys want to read the part ahead, so it’s up to you to decide whether you’ll take a peap or not, but I just wanted to let you guys know.

Annnddd there it is:

You may notice that I’ve introduced a small change to the weekly poll - I have added a new option called “I have finished this part”. That’s because I often had the feeling that I somehow wanted to “tell the world” when I was done with the week’s reading, and it seemed to me that others felt the same because every now and then somebody posted about having finished their reading.

I don’t want to discourage those posts by any way, and I’m always happy to read them! But if you are looking for a more lightweight way of “ticking this week’s reading off”, then this might be an option for you.

Anyways, I’m looking forward to running this experiment with you and to seeing whether you like it!
