Edit: Speaking of my head hurting, I forgot to even attach the image lmao. Here’s what I’m asking about, that bit of info might help.

No responses at all in volume 2! Hello, it is me, the book club. Again, I see the overall conversation, but I’m struggling to fully piece together what is happening here. Context: she’s asked about the sheet that is about training for the class representatives and committee members. At this point she gets asked if she’s interested in trying, it’s clear she’s kind of explaining why she’s not greatly suited, and immediately after these two panels, she pivots to talking about Kou being better.

The first panel (included more for context) seems to be her saying there are people who could be called (casual quoting particle there) “適材適所” or “the right person in the right place.” Then she thinks to herself that she realized that a short while ago. That last bubble…

She’s talked about dragging in / involving everyone in the class, but the どうにかするなんてのは… I can break it into pieces (どうにか = “in some way or other”/“barely”, なんて is probably somewhat derisively marking doing something like that, etc), but I can’t really make those pieces form a coherent whole in my head. And I know she’s trailing off here so it’s probably not fully formed (sorry!) but that’s basically every line of this manga, haha.

When I just step out of breaking it down grammatically I want to say it’s basically “To think of me somehow doing something like involving everyone in the class…” but I’m not confident that isn’t just me writing my own story cause I’m extrapolating heavily from the parts I can truly “understand.”

I only realized after typing all of that that どうにか is itself labelled a する verb (it’s new to me IIRC), which is a little hard to wrap my head around, but plugging it into DeepL as a quick shortcut turns どうにかする into “manage somehow” so yeah, maybe I basically have it? I think I just need another set of eyes on this; my head hurts today, heh.

All this time, it was your destiny to ask the first question in this thread!

As for the line in question, I believe Futaba is essentially (indirectly) asking how she would get everyone in class involved.

(わたし)に = (as) for me

クラスのみんなを()()んで = to get everyone in class involved

どうにかする = to do somehow

なんて = such a thing

I wrap that together as, “For me, regarding how I’d do such a thing as getting the whole class involved…”

The implication being that it’s not something she’s able or qualified to do so, because (based on what she says in the next panel) she feels doesn’t have the social standing in class to be able to lead the other students.

Appreciate the help, as always! I feel bad asking more when you’ve had a lot to do in the book club, but there is a panel near the end of volume 2 stumping me.

That top left panel is giving me issues. I know “Things like cooling off” (I’m guessing in the sort of excitement way since they’re talking about being embarrassed) and “after becoming more old” … wait, is the last part (small っ and all included for emphasis I assume) a way of saying half of something like いつの間にか? Or even いつの日か? The ending was bewildering to me, but every time I start typing up a comment and thinking really hard I think I get more insights into what I think it might be. I’ve deleted a few in progress questions already, heh. Still, this one’s a total guess so I could use some feedback.

I’d say the っ is definitely just because of how he’s shouting out いつ, but I’m not certain of the meaning of から+で+いつ+の here.

For what it’s worth, the English subtitles for the anime translated the line as, “You can be a lot less enthusiastic after you’ve become an old man!”

All good, that’s fair enough. The anime line is a big help just to show that I am basically interpreting the meaning correctly, even if I can’t 100% see how it gets there in a few of the details. It’s been a nice manga, by the way! I struggled a lot more than I expected in a way that frustrated me a little around the first half of this volume, but the difficulty levelled off a little for me now, and I’m getting into it. Only have up to volume 3 on hand at the moment, but maybe I’ll pick more up in the future.
