I feel like chapter seventy’s title image ought to be a reference to something, but my usual resources are coming up blank. I’ll come back and edit this if I figure it out later.

Page 4, final panel, Bocchi’s chant here is the Kuji-in… again, as we saw it before back in chapter 34

Page 5, have we ever seen Sasaki in colour before? I could not work out who that was on the front cover until I hit this page…

Page 7, 必勝カツ丼 is, I’m fairly sure, a common good luck charm in the real world too - because カツ sounds like 勝つ.

Page 9, final panel, Bocchi misspeaks クリムト as Kurihama.

Page 10, I mentioned being unsure back in chapter 46 how the internet correlated クリムトの夜 with YOASOBI - presumably this description of their backstory matches the real-world duo, especially that they’re comprised of a composer and a vocalist.

I’m trying to figure out how those back-to-front kana that Ame often starts her lines with are supposed to be pronounced…

Bocchi in Squid Game

I came across another definition for 面子 which reminded me of pogs, then I found out its thick paper or cardboard cards being slammed down to flip other cards, which made me think of Ddakji. Then I realized that there’s probably art of Bocchi in Squid Game because of her jersey/tracksuit, and sure enough, there is

Even after peeking at the bit about her starting kana being back to front, the backwards さ took longer than I’d like to click for me, I thought it was ち. It was also in 作曲家 so maybe they wanted to reuse it?

Also I got the feeling she’s inspired by Bocchi being Guitar Hero and yet putting herself out there

Back to Bocchi, I missed getting in the flow and the short week’s nice for warming up, hope ya’ll had a good break!

Chapter seventy-one’s title image is from “Genie High Rhapsody” by Genie High.

Oh boy, we’re travelling this chapter, so I get some real-world locations, not just obscure musical references. I bet I’m missing all the musical references anyway.

First panel on page 16 is probably apparent (and is stated in the narration), but it’s the Tokaido/San’yo Shinkansen gates at Tokyo Station. This is not the same entrance, but you get the general idea. (Navigating around Tokyo Station in Street View is hard…)

Middle-school Bocchi needs to learn how to read a book like a normal 陰キャ…

Third panel of page 17 depicts the floating torii gate at Miyajima (and okonomiyaki). Fifth panel is the platform signage for the Shinkansen platforms at Kyoto Station. The note under the seventh panel is a reference to the Predator (specifically, their ability to turn invisible).

Page 18, they’re at Kinkaku-ji (as Kita mentioned on the previous page, and again in the second panel of this one). Ashikaga Yoshimitsu is the name of the shogun who actually turned the pavillion into the golden pavillion, in the third panel he’s wearing Balenciaga. Seventh panel, ハグレスライム is (I’m fairly sure) a mob in Dragon Quest, while ヌタモン is presumably メタモン, the Japanese name for the Pokemon Ditto.

Page 19, it’s again mentioned in dialogue, but this is Ginkaku-ji - you can get here from Kinkaku-ji on the 204 bus, though it takes fifty minutes - and then Kiyomizu-dera - have to take two buses for this leg, and it’s still a fifty-minute trip. Page 20, there’s a couple of kimono rental shops near Kiyomizu (for example), so I couldn’t really say which one this is. In the fifth panel, Sasaki mentions Taiga drama.

Someone may have to explain Bocchi’s joke in the fifth panel of 21 to me, though.

太鼓の達人

I like this word, どんちゃん騒ぎ, it immediately reminded me of どんちゃん from 太鼓の達人, so I thought maybe the origin of the word had to do with festivals with taiko drums, but I found out it’s from battle scenes with どんどん being for taiko sounds and じゃんじゃん for gongs, bells, etc.

We celebrated Christmas a day early, and it just turned into boxing day as I type this, but ain’t no way am I letting there be a chapter with nothing else to add, not on my watch!!!

Alrighty, I hope we’ve made the most of the slow ramp-up, because we’re back to doing two chapters this week.

Chapter seventy-two’s title image is from “Imasara Wakaruna” by TETORA.

Chapter seventy three’s is from “Jersey” by Saba Sister

Before we start with chapter seventy-two’s notes, though, I realised I skipped over the omake page following chapter seventy-one. The magazine here is a reference to るるぶトラベル - here is the 2026 edition of their Kyoto magazine. The Kyoto locations listed down the right side of the magazine are the same in both the real magazine and the manga one - from the top, Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera (all three I’ve linked already since they were in the chapter), Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari Taisha, Nijo Castle, Byodo-in and Uji (and considering that list is some of the most-touristed locations in and around Kyoto, I perhaps didn’t really need to link them all).

After an girls’ talk interlude for a few pages, at the top of 28 they’re now at Nara Park. Fourth panel of 29 is Yamcha’s death pose again (or maybe it’s just Bocchi’s death pose in the Enoshima chapter). Sixth panel of the same page is the Daibutsu at Todai-ji.

And then we skip over the rest of the trip. Bah. Top left of page 31 shows Fushimi Inari (already linked above) twice, and and Glico Man at Dotonbori. And then we’re back at the Shinkansen station. Seventh panel of page 32, nama yatsuhashi is a speciality of Kyoto - I bought a box on my trip last month (I’d had baked yatsuhashi a few times before, but never the nama stuff). Willing to bet the last panel of the page is a bunch of references I’m straight-up not getting, though.

Moving on to the next chapter, I feel like I’m missing the story behind this 最近何か変だった Kita, but on the sixth panel of page 34, HAL’s 来世にくる映像監督大賞 mentioned is possibly a reference to the 次にくるマンガ大賞 (in which Bocchi took eighth place in 2019).

Second panel of page 35, Voyager 2 was launched on August 20th, 1977, while Voyager 1 followed a couple of weeks later on September 5th

Top of 36, is this the first time we’ve seen modern-day Nijika without her bow?

First panel of 37, Kamata Station apparently has a reputation among locals for always having a bunch of drunk salarymen around it, though I never noticed that when I stayed three nights there in 2019. That might say more about me than it says about Kamata, though.

I hope we’re gonna get this music video in the next season of the anime. Or… the one after?

Touhou players in real life

This panel, it saying her skill is dodging deer doo doo, and Kita accidentally stepping in some were all great panels lmao

My dictionary says these statues are traditionally at least 4.8m high, and apparently there are some that are like 2 or even 3 figures high which is pretty dang gigantic

sun dog’s cousin

In the first panel when I saw 向日 as “anthelion (optical phenomenon)” I just guessed “idk it has lion in it, maybe it’s a sun dog or something”, and that’s pretty much exactly what it was (with the main difference being that anthelions are like a full halo I guess?)

Also in the next panel 監督 says げぼまみれ again (sorry idk how to get げぼ in katakana) and is that supposed to be like “has last place written all over”? げぼ is last and I know まみれ is like completely covered in (I heard it for mud and blood before) but didn’t know it could maybe be metaphorical

Todai-ji’s daibutsu is 14.98 metres tall. Wikipedia says it’s “the world’s largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana”, which feels rather… specific.

I bet that’s the largest indoor one, I came across the Ushiku Daibutsu , the 5th of the largest statues in the world being 120m tall, and is bronze too, but it’s the Amitabha rather than Vairocana

So, today I learnt that 声が裏返る means “to crack (person’s voice); to squeak​” from 裏返る = “to break into falsetto; to squeak”, but it also means “to be turned inside out​”, so I wonder if that’s why Ame started her lines with back-to-front kana back in chapter seventy. They’re inside-out, you see. Perhaps.

It’s a reference to commedian Hita Youku’s “Guitar Samurai” routine:

Chapter seventy-four’s title image is from “Hyper” by Kroi.

(The building in the background is the Taipei Performing Arts Centre in Taipei, Taiwan. Didn’t even know Bocchi had a passport.)

Chapter seventy-five’s just seems to be random fanservice (don’t open this page if you’re at work, kids).

Page 46 third panel, スイパラ is short for Sweets Paradise.

Page 49 seventh panel, the くる きっとくる hovering over Yuyu’s head is possibly a reference to Feels Like “HEAVEN” by HIIH (which served as the main theme to the 1998 film リング).

Page 50, that’s Shinjuku in the final panel there. I crossed the road at this intersection on my trip, uh, last year. The nearest Jojoen to that one is here, but it’s got rectangular grills in the tables, and I can’t find a photo of what the shop’s entrance looks like, only the building’s. This one has round grills and a very similar-looking entrance, but it’s a bit further away. Actually, there’s a Sweets Paradise in the building just over the road from that second one. Hmm.

Page 56 final panel, wasn’t the broken wall inside the green room? Not really somewhere fans can casually access.

Page 58 final two panels, if anyone else is like me and is trying to figure out why this Usui guy is being identified like we’re supposed to know who he is, check out chapter thirty-six, all the way back in volume three.

On my Windows keyboard, I can choose to type in hiragana, katakana or more:


I can also type in hiragana first, then press F7 and it changes to katakana (F7 again and back to hiragana)

I read both chapters earlier this week but almost forgot to comment about them since nothing in particular stood out to me this time, but I did like how in both of them, more characters showed up towards the end! The second chapter had a nice hangout spot and I like seeing the focus being outside of Kessoku Band every now and then
