Chapter eighty-four’s title image is from “COLORS” by Humbreaders.
Chapter eighty-fives’s is from “nevermind” by muque.
I’m happy very very hamburger. Congratulations english muffins.
Buried in Bocchi’s nonsense English on page 19 is the phrase “No More Movie Thief” - this is a reference to the NO MORE 映画泥棒 series of anti-piracy ads, essentially Japan’s equivalent to the “You wouldn’t steal a car” ads. Here’s an example:
Aside from that line, it kinda feels like there might be something else hidden in all that word salad, and I really feel like the name of the show itself is referencing something, but I’m coming up blank.
Page 20 fourth panel, CHUKI(15) references fifteen-year-old singer-songwriter tuki. (with the full stop), who reportedly includes her age in her online handles, like on YouTube. She just released her debut album last year, entitled “15”. Looks like she might be sixteen now, though. Her first and perhaps best-known work has a music video on YouTube with visuals drawn by Posuka “Promised Neverland” Demizu:
Page 24 fourth panel, “Chotani Shohei” is a reference to Japanese-born LA Dodgers player Otani Shohei (and I feel like he’s come up before) whose alma maters still hang up banners celebrating his achievements.
That’s it for this chapter, which largely feels like a recap with extra jokes. Moving on to the next.
Page 27 second panel, have you come here in mid-reading to find out what 東名阪 is, like I did? Just keep reading. The next page, specifically.
Page 28 fourth panel, ウニバ is the Universal Studios theme park in Osaka (more typically ユニバ).
Page 29 seventh panel, I feel like this has come up before, but ハイエート is a reference to the Toyota HiAce (ハイエース). I’ve driven one of those before; it’s kinda fun. It’s about the largest passenger vehicle you can drive on a standard car licence here in Australia (though I happen to have a minibus licence anyway). (Also, Village Vanguard lurking in the background of that panel.)
Page 30 fifth panel, Gulliver is one of Japan’s largest second-hand car chains. Same page sixth panel, Bocchi’s imagine spot here is a reference to the Big Motor scandal which came to light in 2023, including the mention of golf balls, Death Metal Bocchi shouting 死刑 and 教育, and Ryo’s discovery that the weeds had all been removed.
Page 31 fifth panel, that’s a Fiat 500. Seventh panel, Kita’s suggestion is apparently a Suzuki Alto Lapin. Ryo’s bubble in the same panel is a direct quote from Initial D (chapter 79, according to my source). Eighth panel, I spy a cybertruck. Bikakin, as covered back in chapter 62, is YouTuber Hikakin.
Page 32 first panel, that’s apparently a Daihatsu Gran Max.
Is it just me, or is the text in this manga getting even more dense? This week’s reading was kinda exhausting.
