I think the みなさん on page 31 is talking about the everyone reading the manga. Did you think Hiroto got a girlfriend? Nope, she’s a relative. I remembered vaguely that the summary on natively said it was platonic, but I didn’t remember she was related.

身寄りのないばーさん = old woman who is not related so glad I caught that earlier.

She’s 18 as it said earlier, so I don’t think 保護者 is meaning legal guardian.

She left him the house? Ow my heart?

I like that the picture he chose for the shrine has granny doing a peace sign, not that blurred serious one in the funeral.

They used to live next door to each other before Hiroto came to Tokyo, so this isn’t a relative he’s never met before scenario.

Argh, I love this art. Natsumi is being quite rude but like she doesn’t know this lady, but Hiroto was trying so hard to keep it together. And the apron saying make me smile when he’s very not smiling? Just, I really, really like this already.

First time in three months? He really was bottling that up huh.

Picture from the chapter cover, and I like that there’s photos with granny to. and that’s chapter 1 complete.

I think 身寄りのないばーさん means “old woman with no relatives”, rather than “old woman who is not related”.

I really like how it’s going so far, I’m just really hoping no romatic relationships arise between the cousins (as is far too common in japanese media lol)

Alright, I’m caught up

上京 is an interesting term. The kanji are simple but I hadn’t seen (or at least recognized) them in that combination before – while it can be translated simply as “moving to Tokyo” here, the fact that there’s a specific term for moving to the capital is interesting. As I live in a much larger country myself, it’s always been interesting to me that Japan is small enough that a person can reasonably be expected to have an opinion on places on the other side of the country, and that the country’s capital is also a busy metropolis where people go both for business and pleasure, instead of like, just a place where there’s a lot of government buildings.

On the topic of the actual contents of the chapter, really loving this start to the series. I feel like I already understand so much about Hiroto and Natsumi and their relationship to each other, though of course I’m excited to learn more.

Also, from a narrative perspective, I’m impressed with how succinctly the second half of the chapter shows the premise of the series and what kinds of conflicts/issues we might expect to see come up in the future.

I found this part a bit easier than the last, perhaps because sentences are generally shorter. Some notes and doubts:

これのどにきくから飲んどき
I’m interpreting 飲んどき as a contraction of 飲んでおき, which is the て form of 飲む (“to drink”) plus the auxiliary verb 置く, meaning “to do something in readiness for”). Not sure how to render it properly in translation, but something like: “This is good for your throat, so drink it up.”

迷わず来れた?

迷わず would be 迷わずに (ずに (JLPT N3) | Bunpro)
来れた is the past potential form of 来る

So something like: “Were you able to come here without getting lost?”

つまんないから
つまんない literally means “boring”, but I’m not sure what the から is doing there. By sense I’d read it like “It isn’t funny”.

この東京で、何も変わらないノンキな青年といろいろ変わってく上京少女。
A bit of weird sentence in that I can’t find the verb. My best effort:
In this Tokyo (この東京で), a carefree young man (ノンキな青年) who won’t change at all (何も変わらない), and (と) a girl who will change in various ways (いろいろ変わって … 少女) who (just) moved to the capital (上京).

I’m definitely enjoying the story so far!

You'll see this from time to time.

The actual text is 「verbて+いる+から」.

You may be familiar with 「verbている」 => 「verbてる」.

But when it’s followed by から, the 〜てるから may further become 〜てっから.

You will of course also encounter 〜てるから

And also 〜ているから

Probably goes without saying (because they’re identified in the panels), but the bottom of page 28 shows the Marunouchi south exit of Tokyo Station and the south exit of Asagaya Station. The panel in between shows the Silver Bell of Tokyo Station (don’t think I’ve ever been past this place myself, though I did discover I’ve ridden an escalator that’s a couple of dozen metres away) and… some random Chuo Line train. There’s Asagaya Pearl Centre again in the background at the top of page 30 - we know where that is.
