Hey yall! I was a week behind because I’ve been really busy with work lately but now I’m all caught up! This week’s easier passages nicely balanced out the trouble I had with last week’s !
Hello yall, will be joining you for the rest of the book club! I’ve caught up to (and actually overshot) the bookclub pace. Hope to join the conversation now.
I’ve actually never finished a book with the bookclubs on wanikani before so hopefully starting half way though will help.
I’m saying this every week I feel like, but it’s really fun to read through everyone’s comment every week. ![]()
I attempted translating again:

みんな準備はいい?
Is everyone well prepared?
今だっ

Page 58
相変わらずね。。。 オオカミちゃん
You haven’t changed, Ookami.
p50
もしかして is more of the “could it be” or “maybe…” line of things
“Could it be that I didn’t even scare anyone successfully before?”
So far, I have a small question on page pg 50.
pg 50
鳥さん、お願いがあるんだけど。。。
My understanding of けど here is that it is a conjunction, and the the second clause of the sentence is implied, because Ookami-chan is being polite and asking a favor from Tori-san. It’s like saying "I have a request, but (would it be too much trouble?). Is this correct? Thank you.
p50
Pretty much, ye. It’s a common way of ending sentences in Japanese to make them a tad bit more polite. There’s even a tofugu article on this here
This section was a bit of breather, being less vocab and dialogue heavy! I think my “gist-comprehension” was decent on this.
Some of the verb forms I’m not clear on, so I may post a couple of questions about that.
ichi.moe says し at sentence end means “gives reason for an unstated but deductible conclusion [the thing is]” – I’m still not sure exactly why she uses it twice in the first panel on 49
Page 49
When し is used to list reasons, it must be used one time for every reason. Like ichi.moe says, it’s used at the end of the sentence, and in this case she says two sentences:
パトロールは順調だし
人聞さんは最近見かけないし
So, she’s listing two reasons, so she needs to use し two times.
し~し (JLPT N4) | Bunpro – Japanese Grammar Explained
From BunPro:
Like て, し is a conjunction particle. This means that it is used for linking the (A) and (B) parts of a sentence, and describing that link in some way. The ‘description’ that し will highlight is ‘reasons’. Regularly it is translated simply as ‘and’.
し may be connected to the end of almost any word, but will require a だ before it when it comes after nouns or な-Adjectives. し will follow every ‘reason’ that is being listed in a sentence. However, the last し may be replaced with から or ので, before the ‘result’ is stated.
Thank you!
ずるっ, comes from ずる
Thanks! I could only find the definition for するっ in regards to slurping noodles and that didn’t quite seem to fit the context. ![]()
ずるっ more often than not is actually stuff like blowing noses. So might not have been easier
I always tend to just skip over sound effects, probably a bad habit that will be hard to fix later on
.
Can I ask (to anyone who’s been reading a while), do you ever get a feel for onomatopoeia or is it something that you should spend a bit of your time actively learning when it pops up?
(Actually is it ok to ask here if its not directly related to the book?)
It’s not vital information, I personally mostly ignore it as well. I wouldn’t spend time on learning it, but if you wanted to, you could at least pay attention to them, and that way it would probably eventually get ingrained. However, if you do in fact want to do that, there are many anki decks to learn them with directly.
Of course, the title is merely a suggestion and this is probably a related question, at least in my eyes
Yes.
You’ll get a feel for which kinds of sounds go with which kinds of sources of those sounds. Some words have a softer sound, some have a more prickly sound, some have a heavier, more abrupt sound, some have a more wafty sound.
Oftentimes, you’ll find onomatopeia used in dialogue as well. There’s a lot out there, and individually they’re not necessarily common, but you’ll likely find yourself recognizing some over time.
There are some rare cases where it is vital, but I agree that it usually isn’t.
The sound of someone slipping when you can see they are slipping? Not so important.
The sound of school bells signalling it’s the end of the school day? Maybe not so important if that last panel had kids in school, and the next panel has them walking home.
The sound of an unseen door slowly creaking open while the main character is quietly sneaking and not hearing it? That may be vital.
The purpose of the book club is to advance one’s reading, and your question is certainly related to that!
Thanks for the answers everyone! They’ve been really helpful.
I think for easier books at least, I’ll try to spend a bit more time on onomatopoeia as it does interest me. But more difficult books maybe not so much.
As always @ChristopherFritz the example manga panels you post make everything 10x better whenever I see them, so thank you.
Translation attempt for Week 6. I already gave my thoughts on the Week 5 thread.

Hi! I thought I would try a translation attempt with this week’s section. I tried to focus less on literal translation and more on getting the same meaning across.
If someone could look over my translation, I would appreciate that ^-^
