しろくまカフェ Vol 1: Absolute Beginner Book Club

More Eastern? By the time you hit New Zealand, there’s not much more East you can go before you wind up in the West. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, there’s always Samoa… :eyes: :DD
But I meant more eastern from where I am, considering I’m kinda in the middle:DD

I’m really new to learning japanese (started learning Hiragana and Katakana like 2 weeks ago), spent a few days here on WaniKani. I want to tackle reading as soon as possible, I’m sure it will be painful as hell but also very informative.

I’m unsure about grammar though, I’ve only started Tae Kim’s guide and I haven’t progressed further than “state-of-being”… but anyway having a book club is a cool opportunity.

Welcome to Wanikani and the Absolute Beginner Book Club

Tae Kim is a good place to start with grammar for this book, since they both use casual forms. Don’t hesitate to ask lots of questions, either

Welcome! I’m struggling with the grammar because although I’ve been learning for about 18 months, it has all been formal. That’s not to put you off! In fact the opposite - to let you know we are all struggling with it, and the point of the beginner’s book club is to help each other out. Well done you for trying to throw yourself in at the deep end.

Thank you for making the thread.
Will you be including a participation poll? There is such a huge number of people saying they will participate in this book that I’m really curious about how the numbers will change as we advance.

No problem, I’m super glad to help!
I will, of course, I basically copied the other book club’s templates, so it’s the same, but for Shirokuma :eyes: :DD

Soon! :eyes:

May I suggest adding the bookwalker version of the eBook to the original post? Might be easier for those who don’t want to set up a Yahoo account.

I’m sorry that was how you felt. My experience was completely the opposite. My book took a while to arrive and I was studying for JLPT so I didn’t really start reading the book until December.

But because it was simply a series of small essays it was very easy to jump in where the current book club was up to without going over the earlier chapters again. I also skipped a chapter and one point and just joined in again on the next chapter.

I later went back and caught up on the chapters I missed and found this really easy to do. I was able to find the right place in the thread simply by searching for the page number. And because each page had line by line translations posted and discussed, I found the old posts really helpful for my own reading and in general any questions I had had already been asked and answered.

Looking forward to the next book and the different approach of having multiple threads, and hoping that this does indeed keep the participant numbers higher.

But Naze was a really interesting read. The thread is still there for reference and questions and I would definitely still recommend catching up and enjoying the book.

Welcome to Wanikani and to the book club! I tried joining in with the Yotsuba book club when I had only been learning a few weeks and I soon gave up and concentrated on just getting on with the basics instead. I hope you do better than me!

My advice would be not to try and understand every word and grammar point but to try and follow the general gist as it might be overwhelming otherwise. And I think you will find it really rewarding the parts you can understand. Good luck!

Aye, I just noticed that too. Could have sworn I’d never seen it before, but it’s also showing further up, above @drakkar’s post. Did… did I just fail to notice it then, or is it new literally this morning?

All I can confirm for sure is that it’s been at least 42+ seconds since its implementation :durtle_the_explorer:

Just in time!!!

I’ve seen the anime so I know the story. Hopefully that will help with comprehension. So excited to start reading!
