しろくまカフェ ~ Shirokuma Café Anime Club 📺

I think you’d also say “吸うあないで” for not wanting to be smoked! :smoking: XD Also, useful?! :joy: Though, the lack of a personal pronoun makes it wage what is not to be smoked. ^^; Or if it’s just in general, “don’t smoke”

I am enjoying this show a great deal. I will try to grab the opening song words and figure out how to translate them, at least as a start (I’ve figured out phrases like “his recipes” and right before Shirokuma does a little dance they mention a mango shake, I think!). I have watched episode 1-3 a second time trying to avoid the subtitles and just follow the voices, but there are still too many words I don’t know. Episodes 4-6 I didn’t want to watch a second time, but 7-9 so far are good fun.

To be precise: it’s “strawberry-mango shake” - the best sort of shake! :tropical_drink: Lots of other menu items are in the lyrics as well. Ganbatte listening and trying to figure it out! ^^

I’ve been too busy to watch this week’s episodes, but I’m gonna have time this weekend! ^^

One of life’s bigger questions: how does Penguin-san drive a car? :red_car:

But I really love episode 7 and the love theme going through both parts of the episode: even with all that, poor Handa-san is only popular with the animals ^^; and then Penguin-san’s struggling to get his love-love-licence :sparkling_heart: is tons of fun! :joy:

About episode 6: I do have a special fondness for Grizzly-kun :bear: ^>^

Episodes 10-13 up next week, but since it’s Halloween I’m being lazi watching stuff I like (not too scary and that’s when Shirokuma comes in XD)

My thoughts:

Episode 10

Summary

Love how involved Panda-kun is in Handa-san’s life. Lots of awkwardness and now I’m bound to agree with @DIO-berry I guess this show IS for adults, weird as that is! XD Well, Panda-kun and Shoukin-panda-san overturns Handa’s reluctance to go to a goukon and now he’s struggling to keep up socially. lol

My favorite part of this episode - Penguing-san being left out and then doing karaoke! :penguin: :notes: Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-halo! :durtle_hello:

I’m curious about these subs. Can anyone guarantee they’re accurate to what is being said, kanji and everything? I’ve heard lots of mixed reports about kamigami and kitsunekko. I hope it’s okay to ask a question like this.

I’m glad you agree now lol! The informational bits remind me of daytime television which is more aimed at housewives I believe

My two cents that isn’t so much about this service (that I don’t now about) but about translation in general: there is no such thing as a one true translation and there will always be multiple interpretations ongoing amongst translators or researchers if it’s that kind of text.

As you move up into the layers of pure entertainment, quick-translation is defo a thing. And “official” TV translations can be quite bad frankly. (Due to pay and time-contraints imposed). Same goes for the simulcasts done now online. Fast and not too accurate.

So, for any subs you’ll encounter, you’ll have to ask yourself - is this what was just said? Was the nuansing off? What is completely off the mark?

Because those things happen then things are translated quickly, be it done by fans or pros (but much more often by fans).

Full disclosure: Being Swedish, all shows in foreign languages gets subs on TV here so there’s a lot to stuff to sub, and not all of them are good - not even between English → Swedish. T_T

I guess you’ve got at point about that! :eyes: *housewives…and with the Panda-mama and her friends the main parody of sorts XD) Panda-mama is defo my favorite character in Shirokuma Café though I love many of these animals! ^^

I just love the way she vacuums lol. I think either Shirokuma or Grizzly are my favorite. They remind me of my favorite cafe managers and izakaya owners. They all share a lot of similar traits :3

Also, before I forget:

Everyone, I just realized that someone had added several “chapters” to the word document which doesn’t make much sense - we watch episodes, not read chapters.

If anyone is confused as to what club they’re in, there is also a Shirokuma Cafe MANGA club in the reading section of the forums that they should attend to. Please don’t mix the two!!

The word sheets that already exists, for example “episode 1 to episode 10”, then the next is 11-20 is how it works. So no additional sheets should be needed. Don’t add your own!

I’m gonna post a warning about confusion in the manga club now. ^^;

hah! Yeah, we’ve been watching the seasons of Bäst i test (Taskmaster in Sweden) that we can get on youtube, and sometimes the subtitles in English leave us scratching our heads about what they meant… But every now and again we can catch a phrase that is directly from English or close enough that the subtitles are redundant, which is a weird experience.

Question about translation in the opening lyrics of Shirokuma Cafe, by the way:
The last line that repeats ma ma ma ma maharo –
I was translating that as ma ma ma ma ma hallo, because “haro” sounds like “hallo” (hello) to me.
But someone else translated it as mahalo, which is also a word–Hawaiian for thank you.
And of course it might be nonsense as the ma ma ma part was.

Anyone have any idea which one was intended by the song writers?

Oh, I 100% agree with you about all of that regarding translations, which is one of the numerous reasons I’m learning the language. But in this case these aren’t supposed to be translated subtitles, they’re just transcripts of what is being said in Japanese. I’m just curious if they are accurate in that respect.

Aha, my bad. The use of subs for also Japanese transcripts just confuse me overall. Call then transcripts not subs if that’s what they are, imo! XD

I can’t vouch for their integrity, obviously, but hope someone else with a good language proficiency might step in and answer the question!

I watched 4 episodes of ろくまカフェ in June but didn’t get round to continuing it, so I’m glad to have come across this thread! I just watched episode 5 and love how funny the show is. I don’t expect to understand much without subtitles, so I’ve got both JP and ENG subtitles on. I do sometimes turn off ENG at times where the conversation seems easier for me to gage though. Either way, it’s still a fun experience!

Currently up to episode nine and I am increasingly concerned about Rin Rin’s panda obsession

Lol. Ngl I love RinRin as a character! It’s that juxtaposition of him being ikemen, admired by girls frequenting his flower shop, and then the depth of his love for cute pandas. :joy: Panda-kun being into Handa-san, and ignoring RinRin, is another layer to the joke. XD

Is Panda into Handa?? I just read them as friends but Panda is more interested in helping/feels like he can help Handa unlike Sirokuma or Pengi

Not sure I’m using English correctly, but he’s certainly very invested into Handa-san’s personal life. XD
