Note this club is based on the originally published series. If you have the bis version the content will be mostly the same but there are differences in page numbers and chapter titles
Schedule
Important Info
Make sure to use the half of the table that matches your version of the books! Left half for original, right half for bis!
bis readers: chapters 24-28 are in your volume 1, chapters 29-48 are in volume 2. For original readers everything is in volume 2
bis readers will have to do some jumping about as the chapters are in different orders, and chapters 40, 41, etc are in volume 3 of the original so won’t be read until next thread
The star icon indicates a section unique to that version of the book
Thanks to @Micki for providing the bis information

Spoiler Courtesy
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

I love the idea of doing tanabata in the cafe, I like to think they gave tanzaku papers along with all the customers’ orders so they could write their own and it be put up in the cafe, I think that’d be really fun
I got a bit behind but just decided to jump back in with the club. Ch 5 (original) / ch 28 bis had a funny twist to what looked like a serious backstory at first. who is the real Shirokuma ?
I tried to upload a screenshot of the よんこま for the original folks, but the forum is giving me an error … hopefully just temporary and doesn’t mean it’s going to get harder for me to post images
So much going on this week! Loved the extended punning on the name of the flower (ひまわり) - and the final “pansy!” punchline. I really wanted to go and have a drink in that bar but it turned out to be a 書き割り! (We saw it knocked over on the last page of the chapter).
Loved panda in the pool surrounded by all the girls. ボクも乗りたいです!
The name origins section was harder to follow although the English language internet helped figure it out. Nigalya ponya appears to be the Nepalese phrase meaning “bamboo-eating animal”. I wasn’t quite sure how these words were interpreted by panda. Perhaps he heard にがり as in bitter/sour?
In this chapter, I didn’t get the start, why does polar bear start with パトロール中? Is it just the segway to おまわり? but that feels a bit weak like I missed something
2nd chapter bis 33 and notes on penguins!
Haha that is so cute that king penguin thinks people mix him up with emporer penguin because their names are similar
It turns out that the story of how the penguins got their names is true! Also in that article, it says the easiest way to tell them apart is that king penguins have a tear-dropped patch of colour on the side of their head. And in this chapter you see the king penguin has this. So then I wondered which one was in book 1 and I remembered in book 1 the scene where the emperor penguin and king penguin met. So it’s the emperor penguin that is first introduced (no tear-drop shape and the back is fully black). And the scene where they meet is ch 21 (Halloween party) and side by side it’s really obvious. If you know what you’re looking for now you can easily tell them apart!
