Updated the thread to become the home thread! As per the polls we’ll start on 27th May, and do 2 chapters a week. Since some chapters are the length of 2 chapters I put them in their own week but if we think progress is too slow at the time it can always be updated.
I don’t have the bis version but I believe the chapters are labelled differently, orig has no numbers but unique titles for each chapter, and bis has numbers but no titles. I took a guess at the chapter numbers but if you have the bis version let me know and I’ll update the table.
Another idea, I think orig has some parts that bis doesn’t (as far as I know bis doesn’t have anything unique) so what we could do is double up the unique chapters with the regular schedule so bis havers don’t have to wait a week for the orig version to read the unique chapters, or we could take pics of the unique chapters so everyone can read along (though I’m not sure if that would be allowed). Lemme know thoughts! (Also I don’t know exactly which chapters are unique to orig lol so if we can figure that out it’d be swell)

It doesn’t seem easy to check without reading it, so I wonder if we could check as we go. For example, if in the first post for each week you or someone else posts the first panel of each of the two chapters we’re supposed to read then someone with the bis version can confirm if they match! I’m sure it will be ok most weeks. Thanks for organising and combining the different versions, will be interesting!

Sounds good, and I’ll make sure to post the weekly threads a couple days before they’re technically due to start so we can sort out any chapter differences in enough time

FYI I just discovered some cool things digging around
- issue 1 of the bis edition is on manga-kotoba, so perhaps list that under the vocab spreadsheet as it’s a convenient way to see vocab, either by frequency, or in the settings you can update it to chronological order.
- the vocab sheet from the first club has decent coverage. Maybe we could build on that one or incorporate it into the one you made?
- As a bonus, the vocab sheet has a correspondence table on the fourth tab between versions: bis/original/ebook up to Ch 28.

I originally was looking at the table of contents thinking that was the chapters, and I’m so happy to realize it’s a much more manageable length as I am a super beginner (currently working through chapter 10 of Genki). Super excited to get started (and to discover that Bookwalker has the first 9 or so chapters since I’m waiting for my copy to come in lol)

I have the bis version as a digital book. I don’t see any chapter titles, am I missing them? From the chapter titles you’ve listed I can guess that the order of my chapters is the same as yours for the first few weeks. But I wonder if we are going to need a photo of the first panel each week to confirm which chapter we’re reading.
BTW, I never knew what “bis” referred to on the new version. Having failed to find it in a Japanese dictionary I found it in an English dictionary this morning.

Yeah bis has chapter numbers but no titles and orig has titles but no numbers, so basically I’ve written the titles and guessed the numbers and we’ll have to check the first panels each week to make sure they line up. I’ve got them aligned up to chapter 10 since that’s where the bookwalker preview stops of bis

The chapter titles and numbers align through chapter 14 (動物園編).
After that:
- The original has a chapter not in bis.
- The vacation chapters are shuffled into bis earlier rather than at the end like the original.
- bis has chapters from the original volume 2, as bis has four volumes rather than five.

Could anyone tell me how you do the auto-generated vocab lists for book clubs, I’m trying to search the forum but getting a little lost

What vocab list do your have in mind? The Google sheet ones are done by hand by volunteers.

I’ve seen a few people I forgot who, say they use a tool of some sort to extract sentences and parse them for vocab, then I think they clean then up manually but I’m not sure what the tool(s) is
