Week 9 is live!
Only 1 chapter this week. Then it will be two chapters again until the end.
Week 10 is live!
Back to reading two chapters per week.
I’m enjoying reading this book. I’d wondered about following it with another 赤川次郎 book.
I know that there is a nomination thread for the IBC, but not sure if that group will want to follow up so quickly with another similar book. If there were enough interest, we could read one as an offshoot club? Anyone interested? @pm215 seems to have read a lot of these. Any recommendations?
By and large the author’s style/difficulty level is similar across books (the exception apparently is that 三毛猫ホームズ series is harder because the author hadn’t settled on a writing style yet; also the 鼠 series is harder just because it’s a historical novel with corresponding specialist vocab). So I think of it mostly as picking something that seems like it’s in a genre you like and deciding if you want to read a series or a standalone book.
If in doubt, please feel free to nominate another one of his books in the IBC (nominations are open until Monday)
Then the poll can decide what to do with it, and if it’s not picked, you can still decide on whether to read it alone or whether to form a spin-off club. Or at least that’s how I would go about it ![]()
I put in a nomination for 夜警、but I’d also consider reading his first Calico cat mystery 三毛猫ホームズの推理 | L32, or actually anything that is at a similar level and similarly fast paced, with short chapters!
Natively seems to rate the level other books as in the low 30s, but あなたも is only level 27. I’ve been finding あなたも to be a decent level for me; it’s easy enough that I can just read and enjoy it, and it doesn’t require a ton of look up or feel like studying. In the past, when I’ve read books that Natively rates in the low 30s, they’ve required much more work to get through. Are the others by the same author here really that much of a step up?
I’m not opposed to trying one anyway, but I’m at a stage where I just want to relax and read and enjoy a book without stopping all the time to look stuff up and decipher tough grammar. ![]()
三毛猫ホームズの推理 in particular is harder (see eg cat’s review of it). I don’t know if that carries over to later books in the same series, but the Natively system assigns all books in the series the same rating anyway unless manually overridden. Other than that series, a quick scan through suggests his books are 26 through to 30. But because there are so many 三毛猫ホームズ books you see quite a few L32 in the search results…
Well we are not done yet but I’ve also been enjoying this book from the beginning so would definitely be interested too to try something else from the same author!
And on that note, week 11 is live ![]()
For one I haven’t read, maybe セーラー服と機関銃, which is one of the famous ones (high school girl inherits leadership position in Yakuza gang). I just read the bookwalker preview and it seemed pretty funny. There’s a 角川つばさ文庫 version of this, which as far as I can tell is the same text but with some illustrations and full furigana (the standard text is merely generous furigana, i.e. about the same as あなたも殺人犯になれる!)
Sounds like fun, and a bit different. Why don’t you nominate that one?
I generally prefer to leave the nomination slots in the IBC for people who are participants in that club, since I usually read with the ABC; but I have no objection if somebody in the IBC wants to nominate it, and I’ll probably read along if it gets picked.
