Gosh, I had completely forgot about this thread. 
Nowadays I’ll just post in the “study log” one, please do drop in there if you feel like it.
To summarize, since June 2024:
- Genki: finished 1+2, but only really skimming through them. This turned out just fine for my needs - to give me an overview of the basics, rather than actually “studying” the grammar. Afterwards I decided to not buy any of the more advanced books.
- Grammar: I did continue with it using Bunpro exclusively and as of this morning (I do new lessons in the mornings), I am smack down at the middle of their N2 deck (107 out of 213 lessons) - going about it at the incredibly fast pace of one grammar point per day now, and like with Genki is more “learning about” than “learning”. My grammar reviews are with the Reading + Reveal & Grade style, as I’m not aiming for output.
- Kanji and vocab SRS: WK’s style (learn kanji meanings and readings, then learn vocab based on the kanji) is the best for me. I’m not terribly good at it (80-90% retention or thereabouts?) but I’m far better at WK reviews than other tools I’m using: Bunpro vocab and JPDB where I add vocab either from decks of the book I’m going to read next, or whatever I find interesting in today’s reading session - with these two systems it’s more like 60% accuracy, I guess… but, oh well…
- Reading: The best “tool” here on the road towards native content was Satori Reader and I’ll always heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to read Japanese. Probably best tackled after Genki 1+2 but heck, even Genki 1 should suffice to get one going with Satori. Then in late January I started “reading” my first book - また、同じ夢を見ていた - which again I’d definitely recommend as a great entry point to content written for natives not learners - interesting story, plenty of repetion of vocab without being annoying, not at all difficult grammar and vocab-wise.The other day I finished my fifth book, but I must be absolutely clear: it’s much more “decyphering” than it is “reading”, and I make heavy (perhaps too heavy) use of Yomitan and machine translation to get me through the content. Maybe not the best way to go about it, but I do have a huge wishlist for books (and it keeps growing every day) sooo… whatever gets me there
- Listening: No real progress here, because I’m not actively practicing it Between SRS and reading there’s not much time left for Japanese in a day, and at least for now I am content to just let the heard language seep in while watching films with English subs There is definite progress in listening compared to say this time last year (coming from catching the audio of the grammar and vocab I’ve learned via SRS and reading), but it’s not a whole of it. Not a big problem at the moment, although yeah at some point I should dedicate time to training listening…
