Someone responded to me with this the other day, when I complained that I can’t spell Mediterranean correctly:
Doesn’t that just add it for your own information?
Nope, it becomes a valid answer to type while doing reviews.
Yep! There’s also a button for synonyms right in the review UI. I’m stealing @mindfroggery’s screenshot so I can circle it:
Okay, that might not have been clear enough when I signed up, then. Good thing I asked, I might not be the only one with this issue. I thought it was just for your own reference
Adding synonyms is great. The only problem/limitation is that you can only do it during reviews (when you probably didn’t think of it unless you just got it wrong) or from the actual item page (which is out of the way and requires being proactive about it). You can’t do it during lessons. There is a script for that though which you can find here [Userscript] WaniKani Lesson User Synonyms v2
There’s lot’s of tips and tricks and advice you can find in this community.
Just use the search option and a whole world of questions and answers you didn’t know you wanted to ask will emerged and flood your consciousness.
This is a great feature… Been frustrated by the same thing. I’ve only used it for a couple of items where the English word is just not something I use regularly and so it doesn’t come to mind easily, but some other synonym does.
The two I keep mixing up lately are town and village… Ugh… (aren’t they they same thing?!) I feel like I should know the difference so I haven’t added synonyms for those…Can’t make things too easy.
I tried to see if there’s anything but I couldn’t find any, haha. Thank you for the help though
I think I used it only once for Zazen… but that’s because I use the override script, which I don’t recommend using in the 8-10 first levels.
As for Town vs Village - a Town is smaller than a city but functions the same way governing wise, while a village is even smaller, more of a perish like community and is rural.
I have been having this lately happen a lot with verbs. I don’t like that the “to” is required when it’s clear that you know what verb is being referenced. I can’t tell you how many times I got 引 く wrong because I wrote just pull instead of TO pull for the meaning.
It’s really driving me crazy with “Jailbreak” right now. I somehow think of a different synonym which WK doesn’t have every time, so I already had to add 4 synonyms.
Synonyms already improved the quality of my life
Installing an ignore script/using an app with the ignore feature also helps. I still miss some things to keyword brainfarts and typos, but it helps a lot to rein them in.
Yeah, after opening this thread I went ahead and finally installed like 4 different scripts I’m not gonna lie, haha
I took me a long time to realize what adding synonyms actually did too.
Honestly when I joined and first looked at WK’s explanation of the synonyms it just sounds like you’re allowed to enter your synonyms but it doesn’t necessarily say that WK will accept them (probably should have tried to add one as a test anyway, haha)
the overwrite script is nice for these kind of mistakes.
