Most items still have the old layout where the hot keys continue to work. It’s the new layout that exhibits the problem.
My understanding is all items will eventually transfer to the new markup.

This is horrible, horrible news. Keyboard shortcuts are essential.
What does the new layout look like. Anyone perchance have an opportunity to share screenshot here so I know what to look for and hence know when to be disappointed?
Pardon being somewhat forward here, but this doesn’t seem like great reasoning behind removing a much used accessibility feature. At the very least an ‘all or nothing’ approach should be considered so the feature isn’t nuked completely.
for some reason, this script isn’t working for me. Real shame. Good to see it’s working for others at least.
Hmm…
I just performed 21 reviews without encountering the new layout. It appears I may have been mistaken and the new layout IS only on some lesson pages, not reviews. Mea culpa!
Still a regression, and still annoying, but at least somewhat less painful.
EDIT:
I just did 5 lessons, and all exhibited the issue. This is the offending layout FWIW:
(Also: unfair to have this come up in my lessons while I’m home sick with COVID! WK really has it out for me this week! )
I would chuckle, I do like my dark humor, except there’s really nothing funny about covid.
Had to look that word, pasted here for others…
Be careful with exertion, even mental activity, as this appears to be a risk factor for long covid.
This is one time where you really can give yourself permission to do fewer reviews.
I can confirm that it works fine for me on Chrome on a mac. @Sinyaven doesn’t appear to have created a thread for this script, and this discourse server doesn’t have DMs, so I guess this is the best place to request support.
It would help if you could provide any further information on your installation and precisely how it doesn’t work. Does anything at all happen on lesson quizzes when you press “f” followed by the spacebar after providing an answer? Does Wanikani Spacebar Expand All appear to be enabled in the tampermonkey dashboard?
I am not at all a fan of that new layout. Compare to this which has everything displayed in a nice, organized, readable fashion. Why do we think it’s better to hide everything behind click to open dropdowns? That’s just user-hostile.
@TofuguNico It would be great if some of this feedback could get back to the people who make decisions about UX at WaniKani.
As far as I know the new accordion interface is for now only active during the lesson quiz and with script compatibility mode disabled, but I guess the plan is that the review page will also use this design in the future. By the way, @TofuguNico, the script compatibility mode page is a bit outdated and does not list this change yet.
Sorry to hear that – can you provide more information so that I can try to fix any potential problems?
Yeah, this is not, “we removed this thing no one uses”. It’s probably the most used shortcut, people just don’t talk about it because it works.
Hey, everyone. Thank you all for the feedback in response to @TofuguNico’s clarification. As I’m sure you can imagine, the changes we make to WaniKani are never made lightly. There is a great deal of planning and foresight behind each alteration.
That said, we’re happy to take your feedback to our product team. We’re lucky enough to have a wide variety of users, so your particular experience will always be valuable to us.
Also, feel free to tag @Mods in place of my friend Nico going forward. I don’t want him to work too hard
The work is appreciated. The problem is limited in scope. And thanks to @Sinyaven there is a workaround in place.
In the grand scheme of things it’s not a huge issue, but it is an annoyance to several of us.
Thanks for the reply!
Also, I feel this needs saying: I don’t fault anyone at Wanikani for this tiny little kerfluffle, least of all you! I sincerely appreciate you getting back to me on a dormant thread!
The bulk of any user base always skews toward newbies who are unlikely to use all the features. I suspect some of your devs may not be power users either, so might not be as attuned to what might be surprisingly important.
It’s just that most of us spend an awful lot of time in the tool so we are hypersensitive to changes (especially when something we use goes missing).
WK support is fantastic, content or technical!
Hey all!
Thanks for all the feedback, I’ve made sure to relay the information to the engineers. While I’m here I’ll just clarify a few points.
While this is true, we will be reviewing how the lessons quiz go first before implementing it to the reviews later, so good feedback now is essential.
The main reasoning behind the change was to (on the long run) reflect all the additional content we have started adding to lessons (patterns of use for ex:) but also to categorise the different parts of the lesson so that learners can only reveal what they choose to reveal rather than all or nothing.
Thanks for pointing this out, we’ll see about making the change.
This is a good point and I have clarified this in the conversation we have running with the engineers.
Just from a developer’s standpoint, I want to agree with the point that having something behind mouse-only access without keyboard access is a MAJOR accessibility issue, not just an annoyance, no matter how major or minor. Accessibility is important stuff in web-dev! I appreciate that you guys are talking through potential solutions!
I reproduced the problem today. [Nope. Likely working fine.]
I was quizzed on the reading for 濯. Hitting ‘f’ displayed the div with only the reading section open. Hitting the spacebar, however, did not twirl open any other sections (I had to use the mouse).
I’m not sure, but I think it may only work when quizzed on meanings (or at least when the first section is the one already open). In this case, the closed meaning section was above the open reading section (followed by the remaining closed sections).
Unfortunately, this means there is currently no reliable workaround that I’m aware of.
Sigh. I just realized I apparently installed the script on the OTHER computer. Notice anything missing in the list of installed scripts?
Oh
I did actually not notice it and was just now installing the same scripts as you in order to check if I can reproduce your problem.
My genius is finding the most difficult to diagnose bugs.
[“Is the computer plugged in?”]
@Mods Just to add my opinion to the others here, while I understand the idea behind all the new sections, the change also very negatively affects larger screens. Whereas before I could see all the important information without scrolling thanks to the two column layout, I now not only don’t have the spacebar hotkey and so have to use the mouse, but also have to scroll down because as there’s only one column it doesn’t all fit on the screen at once. I also find that getting rid of the column division has made it much harder to quickly identify a specific section, as they all look the same in the new layout.
I feel like an important part of the UX should be being able to do reviews quickly - there’s limited time in each day after all - and all of these changes so far I’ve found significantly slow me down.
I hope the amazing Wanikani team can take all of the feedback in this thread into account!
Maybe we could even end up with it being a togglable setting between the two layouts?
Thanks for all of the feedback! It helps to hear about your experiences, especially since we’re all on different devices and it looks slightly different depending on each of them. We’ll keep this in mind when making future decisions and see if there’s anything we’d like to do about the current layout as well.
I hope this doesn’t mean you don’t just check how it would look on basically every type of screen/device when designing the layout.
