What does おいたわしや mean?

Hello, I’m playing FF1 and there’s a guard standing outside the Queen’s room and he says this:

｢お妃様は、悲しみのあまり部屋に閉じこもったままです・・・。おいたわしや・・・。｣

I can’t understand that last part at all, could someone help me out with it please?

Yeah. Looks like the dictionary form of the word is いたわしい (“heartrending; pitiful; saddening; pathetic”), plus an honorific お prefix and a や supposedly expressing 〜だなあ. This web page defines it as

「おいたわしや」は、目上の人に、何とお気の毒なことかという気持ちを伝える言葉です。
