ใŸใ™ใ‹ใ‚Šใใ† - (people) who seem like theyโ€™ll survive

Page 61 Sentence 2

Pretty close, Iโ€™d say itโ€™s something like:

ใใ‚ŒใŒ ใฟใˆใ‚Œใฐ

If you can see this, (whether or not someone will live or die)

ใฒใจใ‚‚ใ†ใ‘ใซ ใชใ‚‹
To become a money making opportunity

Note that itโ€™s using ใชใ‚‹, to become, here.

Page 62 Sentence 1

ใชใซใ€ใกใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใจ ใ„ใฃใŸใฃใฆ

This is the ใฃใฆ quoting particle, which is the casual form of the quoting particle ใจ
So weโ€™ll need to treat the entire section beforehand as a quote.

ใ€Œใชใซใ€ใกใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใจ ใ„ใฃใŸใ€ใฃใฆ

ใฃใฆ isnโ€™t always a literal quoting particle, and sometimes means something closer to โ€˜as forโ€ฆโ€™ which is what weโ€™ll translate it as here.

Then the part being quoted:

ใ€Œใชใซใ€ใกใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใจ ใ„ใฃใŸใ€

Literal: โ€œWhat, treatment?โ€ you said

Now, Mohei didnโ€™t actually say โ€˜what treatmentโ€™ but the Shinigami is imagining that Mohei is thinking โ€˜what treatmentโ€™ since Mohei isnโ€™t actually a doctor.

The Shinigami is imagining that Mohei would be confused by the suggestion to become a doctor and treat patients, so this sentence is him imagining Moheiโ€™s response and explaining that actually, the โ€˜treatmentโ€™ is very simple. (clapping your hands together)

ใชใซใ€ใกใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใจ ใ„ใฃใŸใฃใฆ

If youโ€™re saying โ€˜what, treatment?โ€™

or

As for โ€˜what treatmentโ€™โ€ฆ

ใฝใ‚“ใฝใ‚“ใจ ใฆใ‚’ ใŸใŸใ‘ใฐ

If you clap your hands together with a ใฝใ‚“ใฝใ‚“

ใ—ใซใŒใฟใฏ ใ„ใชใใชใ‚‹

ใ€Œthereโ€™s a large profitใ€

ใฃใฆ here is kind of like โ€˜aforementioned,โ€™ the Shinigami is โ€˜quotingโ€™ himself, earlier, saying that there is a good moneymaking opportunity. ใ‚ใ‘ means reason, cause.

ใใ‚Œใง ใŠใŠใ‚‚ใ†ใ‘ใฃใฆ ใ‚ใ‘ใ•ใ€‚

This is the reason I said โ€˜thereโ€™s a large profitโ€™

Page 62 Sentence 5

ใŠใใ•ใ‚“ใŒ ใŠใใ‚Œใ‚‹ใฎ

ใ‚‚ particle is just for emphasis- weโ€™ll say it means โ€˜evenโ€™

ใ‹ใพใ‚ใš

ใ‹ใพใ† - to mind

ใ‹ใพใ‚ใš- ใš negative, means โ€˜withoutโ€™

without minding

ใ•ใฃใใใ€ใŠใใ•ใ‚“ใŒ ใŠใใ‚Œใ‚‹ใฎใ‚‚ ใ‹ใพใ‚ใš

Page 63 Sentence 2

This is all one large noun phrase. Letโ€™s work backwards:

Iโ€™m not sure why ใ“ใจ is being used here instead of ใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ or something, but Iโ€™m pretty sure heโ€™s just saying itโ€™s been a long time that sheโ€™s been ill.

Page 64 Sentence 1

Might be a typo here but โ€˜many doctors have given upโ€™

Let me know if youโ€™re still confused by anything

Hehe, I just wanted to post about the casual ใฃใฆ but @soggyboy was faster. Thank you

Thanks, I will Go through everything again when Iโ€™ve finished Reading the book.

Oh another thing I always notice with easier material (and hey, we are on a kanji learning plattform, so letโ€™s advocate some!): I feel like texts that have kanji are easier to parse grammarwise. Like the grammar just sticks out a lot more  Well of course kanji (without furigana) then pose a different kind of challengeโ€ฆ I guess we have to suffer one way or the other. :face_with_peeking_eye:

Yeah, especially since normal Japanese is written without spaces, using kanji makes the word boundaries easier to parse. Like seeing [kanji] ใ—ใ„ will tell your brain itโ€™s an adjective, and that the word starts with the kanji and ends with the ใ„ but something all in hiragana takes more effort to parse. This book tries to get around that problem a bit by including spaces.

ใงใ™

ใฃใฆ๏ผŸ
Quoting particle

ใˆใฃใ€ใชใ‚“ใงใ™ใฃใฆ๏ผŸ

Eh, what was that? (What did you say?)

This is the customer speaking to Mohei, who just said the previous sentence about the Shinigami being at the feet.

Page 66 Sentence 1

Almost there, awesome job with this long sentence!

The key here is this:

ใฒใจใ‚’ ใฎใ“ใ—ใฆ

The object of ใฎใ“ใ™, to leave something behind, is ใฒใจใ€‚The ใฒใจ in question is the head of the household, so heโ€™s the one being left behind by Mohei. Donโ€™t forget that Mohei is the subject of the sentence.

Mohei clapped his hands together with a ใฝใ‚“ใฝใ‚“, and leaving behind the dumbfounded head of household, he quickly returned home.

Page 66 Sentence 2

Yeah, more naturally this would be something like โ€˜the head of household from yesterday came runningโ€™ but you got the idea
ใ„ใ‚„ใƒผใ€ใณใฃใใ‚Šใ—ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

ใ„ใ‚„ใƒผใ€Expression of disagreement
ใณใฃใใ‚Šใ—ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚to be surprised
I think ใ„ใ‚„ here is less like โ€˜noโ€™ and is more just an exclamation, like โ€˜oh my!โ€™

Oh my, Iโ€™m shocked!

Page 66 Sentence 4

ใŠใ‹ใˆใ‚ŠใซใชใฃใŸ = fancy way of saying โ€˜went homeโ€™

Note that โ€˜doctorโ€™ is Mohei, and the head of household is just speaking in the third person.

ใ›ใ‚“ใ›ใ„ใŒใŠใ‹ใˆใ‚ŠใซใชใฃใŸ ใ‚ใจใ€

After you (the doctor) went home,

Looks like a typo but she ate three meals/portions of rice.

Page 67 Sentence 1

ใใ† ใ„ใฃใฆ

This is ใ„ใ†, to say

โ€œSaying thusly,โ€

The ใ„ใ is at the end,

ใŠใ„ใฆ ใ„ใใพใ—ใŸ

He left (coins) and went.

Page 67 Sentence 2

Instead of describing a specific incident/event, weโ€™ve switched to the narrative voice, which is just describing things generally. So this is:

โ€˜In this way, Moheiโ€™s reputation steadily spread.โ€™

Page 67 Sentence 3

Same as the previous sentence.

ใณใ‚‡ใ†ใซใ‚“ใ‚’ ใฟใฆใ€ใ—ใซใŒใฟใŒ ใพใใ‚‰ใ‚‚ใจใซ ใ„ใ‚Œใฐ
โ€˜If Mohei saw a patient with the god of death at their pillow,โ€™

ใ‚ใใ‚‰ใ‚ใชใ•ใ„ใจใ„ใ„

ใ‚ใใ‚‰ใ‚ใชใ•ใ„ = please give up

ใจใ„ใ„

Ok, this is a bit of a tricky one because of the lack of hiragana, andใจใ„ใ„ is a grammar point on its own, but I think this is actually ใจ่จ€ใ„ instead of ใจ่‰ฏใ„ใ€‚Itโ€™s this connector form of the verb. So itโ€™s Mohei saying โ€˜please give up on this patientโ€™

All together and rephrased in third person:

If Mohei saw a patient with the god of death at their pillow, he said โ€˜please give up on this patient,โ€™ and if it was at their feet, he would clap his hands.

Page 68 Sentence 2

This is someone speaking.

Note that โ€˜reputationโ€™ is modifying โ€˜doctorโ€™

ใฒใ‚‡ใ†ใฐใ‚“ใฎ ใŠใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒใ•ใพใฏ
The reputed/well known doctor

ใ“ใกใ‚‰
Here/this way

ใงใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹

ใงใ—ใ‚‡ใ† literally is like โ€˜probablyโ€™ but here it just makes the sentence fancier, by making it more indirect, as opposed to just attaching ใ‹ to the end of the sentence.

ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒใฏใ“ใกใ‚‰ใงใ™ใ‹๏ผŸ
Is the doctor here?

ใฒใ‚‡ใ†ใฐใ‚“ใฎใŠใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒใ•ใพใฏใ“ใกใ‚‰ใงใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹๏ผŸ

Is it possible that the esteemed and most reputable doctor is here?

Page 68 Sentence 3

ใŸใšใญใฆ ใใŸใฎใฏ

The one who came and asked

ใˆใฉใงใ‚‚
I think the ใ‚‚ here is emphasis, similar to โ€˜even in Tokyo.โ€™ Not 100% sure on this one, but I think that the particle usage/emphasis here is saying that there are many rich people in Tokyo, but even among them this guy is particularly rich and well known.

Page 68 Sentence 5

Yes, thatโ€™s right that sheโ€™s literally saying โ€˜will he recover?โ€™ but I think that this is another case of how in Japanese, people speak indirectly when theyโ€™re being polite. Sheโ€™s really asking โ€˜will you heal my husband?โ€™ but saying so directly would be less polite.

Page 68 Sentence 7

Looks like I missed an expression when I was doing the vocab sheet. ใซใ‹ใŽใฃใฆ is โ€œparticularly; only; in the case ofโ€‹โ€

ใงใ‚‚ใ€ใ“ใ†ใ„ใ† ใจใใซ ใ‹ใŽใฃใฆ
However, in this particular case,

ใ—ใซใŒใฟใฏ ใพใใ‚‰ใ‚‚ใจใซ ใ„ใพใ™ใ€‚
the god of death was by the pillow.

Page 69 Sentence 2

Iโ€™d say that here ใ ใ™ is like โ€˜to giveโ€™ money.

ใ„ใใ‚‰ใงใ‚‚ ใ ใ—ใพใ™ใ‹ใ‚‰

Iโ€™ll give you anything/as much as you want, so

ใชใ‚“ใจใ‹ ใŸใ™ใ‘ใฆ ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚
please help somehow

Page 70 Sentence 1

ใ‚ˆใ†ใซใ™ใ‚‹ is a grammar point meaning โ€˜to see to it that.โ€™ It carries the nuance that the actor (Mohei) is doing something on purpose/intentionally, it didnโ€™t just happen. The shinigami didnโ€™t just somehow end up at the foot of the bed, Mohei made it happen.

ใ“ใ†ใ—ใฆใ€ใ—ใซใŒใฟใŒ ใ‚ใ—ใ‚‚ใจใซ ใใ‚‹ใ‚ˆใ†ใซ ใ™ใ‚‹ใจ

In this way, seeing to it that the Shinigami was at the foot of the bed,

ใฝใ‚“ใฝใ‚“ใจ ใฆใ‚’ ใŸใŸใ

ใŸใŸใ is the same โ€˜to clap,โ€™ itโ€™s just in the conjunctive form here.

Mohei clapped his hands with a ใฝใ‚“ใฝใ‚“ and

ใชใซใใ‚ใ‚ใฌ ใ‹ใŠใ‚’ใ—ใฆใ€ใŠใ‹ใญใ‚’ ใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใฃใฆ ใ‹ใˆใฃใฆ ใ„ใใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

with an innocent look received the money, and went home.

Awesome job with these, I think youโ€™ve improved a lot with understanding longer sentences. The grammar points Iโ€™m pointing out are mostly N3 stuff so youโ€™re doing great for your level/study so far!

Page 67 Sentence 3

After Reading the end of the Story I assumed He might have dine Something like giving His own life force to some patients, but didnโ€™t understood when.

Hmmm, thatโ€™s not quite right, but Iโ€™m working on the corrections on the next week so Iโ€™ll explain the ending there.

Edit, actually I was misremembering the story. Youโ€™re pretty much right, but Iโ€™ll explain where in the other thread
