We made a chrome extension for learning Japanese with Crunchyroll 🟠💧

Hello! My brother and I have developed a Chrome extension for learning Japanese with anime using Crunchyroll.com. Here’s an overview of our current features:

:speech_balloon: Japanese Subtitles: Integrated Japanese subtitles for selected anime and the ability to add your own subtitles with limited functionality.

:blue_book: Word Parsing: Hover over and click on parsed words to open a popup with translations.

:books: Comprehensive Word Popup: Our word popup offers two tabs: word meanings and kanji information.

:mag: Subtitle Highlighting: Highlight subtitle text to open a Link popup for quick searches on various websites or to build your own Google query.

:stopwatch: Subtitle Sync: Adjust subtitle offset if they are out of sync with the video.

:gear: Customizable Settings: Tailor the user interface to your preferences with our customizable settings.

:memo: Save and Review Notes: Locally save words/notes while watching and review them later. Please keep in mind that these notes will be lost if the extension is removed from the browser.

For now, we only support a limited number of anime, but we will add more if people like it. You can request anime to be added on our discord server. What we have now is just the foundation; we’re looking to expand it with new features (we have plenty of ideas).

:loudspeaker: Feedback Appreciated: As we’re still in the early stages of development, we highly value any feedback, particularly regarding database availability, as we’re using a free tier DB service.

Thank you for checking it out!

No, natively Crunchyroll has no Japanese subtitles. Our extension adds those

Thanks for making this tool! Just getting access to Crunchyroll JP subs alone is something I always wanted

A couple of feedback items:

  1. Would be great to enter our own dictionary preferences, at least hyperlink…not sure if there is a way already aside from unpacking the extension
  2. I like your extension much better than the one I use for prime, namely you fixed the screen ratio dilemma quite nicely…any chance you have interest in expanding to other sites like Prime or Vicki?

This is fantastic!

However, is it possible to load subtitles manually from Kitsunekko for shows that aren’t yet supported with this extension? I’ve been watching ゆるキャンS2 recently and have been using the 字幕プレーヤー Tampermonkey extension with manually uploaded Kitsunekko subtitles to watch it with Japanese subtitles, but would like to continue watching the show using ManabiDojo instead.

Thanks for the feedback!

  1. This is a great idea, we’ll try to implement this in the next release.
  2. This is something we are currently contemplating, whether we should continue to add new features or expand to other streaming platforms (which would also lead to more content). We are not quite decided on this yet.

The issue is that we pre-parse the subtitles when importing them. This process is a little complicated and can’t be done on the fly. That being said, we do plan to provide an upload feature for Japanese subtitles without parsing them. The problem is that the subtitles will not be chunked up into words and the dictionary popup will not work (the text selection popup will work though).

Hello,
we’ve just released a new update that allows users to locally import their own subtitles with limited functionality. We also added the option (in the settings) to define your own dictionary url for looking up terms. Any feedback is appreciated!

Thank you for your feedback! For the next few weeks we’re going to work on allowing users to upload their own subtitles with full functionality. After that i’ll go back to uploading new subtitles somewhat regularly. If you have any anime requests you can post it on our new discord server or you can post it here.

Thanks for the custom dictionary add-on option, I’m using your extension often and it is great. The ability to customize the font size helps with a variety of screen ratios.

If you are still looking for feature suggestions, an option to rewind by ~10 sec is helpful but I don’t know if this is feasible. I know you have the side panel but it’s a quick way just to back if using full screen.

The Discord link above expired, do you have a fresh one?

Hey, glad you like the update! There actually is an option in the settings to set a custom rewind value if that’s what you had in mind.
Regarding the discord link, you are right. I already updated the link in the post but i’ll leave it here as well: ManabiDojo

First I want to thank you for doing what you are doing. I really appreciate it.
I am having an issue and I’m not sure if you might know what it could be but the original subtitles will not show. I see them in your screenshots. I can see that the space is there for the English subtitles but it is just blank on my end. Even when i try to increase or decrease the size I can see that section increase and decrease as well but the native subtitles are not showing just the Japanese. Do you know what might be the issue.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! Regarding your issue, are you making sure the subtitles are not set to ‘None’ in the player settings ? Otherwise you could try uninstalling and installing the extension again.

Thank you. not sure what the issue could be. The subtitles are not set to none, it is on English. the settings for native is on permanent. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the extension and still the same. Just my luck i guess
