Holy hecc, congrats! Was wondering when your lvl 60 post would come, that speed is no joke. Good luck for what’s to come :))

I feel like this is more of a testament to how many people get level 60 but don’t read. Or they read easier stuff.

If you’re reading an actual book, then you will constantly come across non-wk kanji like you said.

Congrats! I can’t imagine going that fast. :joy:

So, now that you are level 60, do you always recognize the kanji?
No. Conversely to what I feel like a lot of level 60ers say, it does feel like I encounter kanji not on WK very regularly.

Yea, I’m starting to feel this. At around level 40 I started checking if the unknown kanji I stumbled across in reading were in Wanikani. If they were, I wouldn’t add them to my self-study lists. I pretty regularly came across new kanji, often with no furigana. For example, off the top of my head:

殻 - shell. in my context the shell on a shrimp that you peel before cooking.
狼 - wolf. i think in this case they were just using the kanji for visual design, but it would normally be written kana. also saw a this in a second place with on’yomi (!) for a game title screen, sekiro (隻狼, character nickname ‘one-armed wolf’).

Still hoping to ditch SRS post level 60 and just learn through reading.

I’m gonna be real with you, you’ll have a pretty hard time with that.

It’s doable, but it will take a lot longer.

Hmm, maybe like a hybrid approach then, where I just SRS things I’ve been exposed to from reading? Thanks for the honesty.

Yeah, thats what I do along with many others. Definitely a much better approach than just learning words from a list.

Later on when you are at a much more advanced level, getting rid of srs is an option because there will be so few new words to learn and reading naturally reviews past words. That level is just very far from where WK puts you at.

Koichi sends CAKE WHEN YOU HIT LEVEL 60?!?!?!

Only if you are sufficiently cool and make long controversial posts on the forum regularly, and occasionally lie about receiving cake.

This is an amazing achievement, congratulations! I’m mostly just lurking around but I remember you well because you started around the same time as I did (according to your posted calendar, ~2 weeks after me).
Man, looking at the level-up chart… how is this even possible :joy: . I just read about how you messed with your sleep schedule, but is it even humanly possible to mess with it for 344 days straight?
Some questions:

  1. Did you have prior experience with WK to even come to the idea of doing a speed run from the very beginning?
  2. How much self-study did you do apart from the regular reviews? I assume you had prior experience with Japanese but I doubt you could go through the later levels with that accuracy without extensive additional study.
  3. Aaaand… how do you know this is the world record and that nobody else sped through WK without missing a single beat? :eyes: (just partly joking, I doubt anyone else wouldn’t write in the forums if he achieved that!)

No, I didn’t. Also, I started learning Japanese in January (well, I already got to like Genki chapter 4 like 6 before that ago, but I had forgotten a lot of it). So yeah, lots of new stuff for me.

I also only got the idea around level 2. Since I got through a few levels with it, I didn’t want to suddenly stop and make it pointless. that continued onwards.

Only explicitly the kanji, and even then, only 2 hours after the lessons, to prepare for the first review. Though I occasionally cheated my apprentice kanji lessons, as the vocab was often where the kanji really stuck in. I didn’t cheat outside of that context though.

I don’t, but until someone links me a post with proof I’m going to assume it doesn’t exist :pouting_man:

:confetti_ball: Congratulations! :confetti_ball:

Amazing journey and amazing willpower to keep up with the tight schedule through the whole program. …and finding some time on the way to help out new durtles to find their way (back) into Japanese grammar

Thanks for sharing with this community what you’ve learned during your studies so far and hope to see you around from time to time. All the best for the upcoming extensive reading challenges. :four_leaf_clover:

Wow you made it! You started later than me and to be honest at first it was a little annoying watching you surpass me and speed off to the finish line. But you worked hard for it and totally deserve to be the record holder. Congrats!

One question:

What led you to hating yourself with such ferocity?

What are you talking about, I saw @Vanilla, Viet Piet’s favorite Som/Dɔːgthær in this very thread. Obviously the WK team kept their promise.
