If what you want is returned in the examples on that page, then yes it can get included.

For your example https://www.wanikani.com/api/#vocabulary-list I can't see anything like that being returned.
Things like audio are not included in the api.
Parts of speech are probably too.

You could always use http://jisho.org/ to look up words returned by WaniKani to Anki Exporter.

"Part of speech" isn't accessible in the WK API, however I'll do what I can? Send me an email to fi_kaimera892@outlook.com and I'll send you a couple things (no nasty things obv. >_<).

First of all, thanks for doing this! This is great to get ready to battle the all-mighty crabigator.

I have one little issue. When importing my Kanji Deck, all of the cards look like this:

Front… k_牛
Back…kanji

Front… k_木
Back…kanji

…and so on…has anyone had this problem?

It’s dependent on that you use the card type they’ve provided you, bigloubeats, or you could create your own as long as you have the appropriate number of fields - and you may need to modify the card type to embed those fields correctly. Any extra text in a field you may need to search/replace out, otherwise you’re best scripting access to your API data yourself if you know any code (python, javascript esp).

And please those docs are very raw. I wrote them up to help myself on the steps needed to import into Anki.
But re-reading them now they are a bit technical and could use some improvements from people using them for the first time.

If you know how to use github, then grab the source from https://github.com/dennmart/wanikani-to-anki and create a pull request to improve the docs.

If you don’t know what you are doing, then you can still help!
The raw file is in slim template format and is available at app/views/docs/_how_to_install_into_anki.slim.
The good news is this is mostly a plain text file that should be super easy to read.
There is even an “edit” button (see the github docs) that will allow you to edit the files in a web browser and when you save the changes it does the magic behind the scences to send Dennis the changes (you will need to create a github account).

So how can you help improve the docs?

  1. More screenshots! I think a few more screenshots might make it a bit easier to read
  2. Simplify and improve the wording used to walk the user through importing into Anki
If you want to help out more I wrote out all the feature requests from this thread into a Feature Requests document.
Pick one and implement it.

I’m having an issue. The only thing that isn’t showing up on the cards is the Kanji. I installed Japanese support and have followed all the directions on the website. The front card is completely blank, while the back card has the reading, meaning, etc. How can I fix this? By the way, I’m only talking about vocabulary words here.

 Pressing "e" to edit the card, while it's on screen, do you see the Kanji? If you copied it to one of the meaning/reading fields temporarily, does it still display? If so, your card type isn't setup correctly to display the Kanji field. It's also case sensitive.

There seems to be a bug. The answers displayed on the back of the flashcards are just what category they’re in. ; - ;

Thanks, and it works very well.

But importing the card, creating the field, customizing the card isn’t that intuitive. I do have to find my way.

Surely, it is very customizable.


I added a field for synonyms and mnemonic and note.

You wont regret spending the extra time to learn how to make Anki do its magic.
You can use it for so much more than Japanese.
