WaniKani Content Additions: Ongoing from April 29, 2021

image more work ?

I love all these ideas we are having, but I dunno if the benefit of implementing them would be worth the dev time and the time the team would take to redo the levels in terms of content distribution and balancing the time to level up. + testing.

Also it might deviate too much from the idea of WaniKani that the team originally intended.

I genuinely do hope they take some of the suggestions on board, even if it’s for minor changes.

I also have another idea brewing in my head that I’m gonna email to them but it’s less about the core features of WaniKani.

It’s April 29 - where are the new lessons?

I should have specified! They’ll be published at 8am PDT. That’s 11am EST, 3pm GMT, 5pm CEST, and midnight JST - sorry Japan

Thanks for the detailed reply @est_fills_cando! I understand what you mean now. I’m going to have a look in more detail and see if we can tweak some of the ordering to fit. It may not be possible, as it clashes with other principles, like teaching transitive verbs first, and teaching more common words and easier concepts first.

In the case of 広がる・広げる, for example, although 広がる is slightly more common according to corpora, 広げる is considered a more basic use (as with the transitive half of most pairs) so meaning-wise it makes more sense to teach that first.

I appreciate you bringing it up, though, and will look into the possibilities more!

Let’s make a deal. I’ll agree that it’s a good idea if you agree that they add the new levels from 16 to 26.

I am in favor of 100! Every level will feel like finishing a full %! (this will need some moving around, since 60 will split to 120)
Of cause, to keep speed similar, radicals will be learned in the level before, so when you level up all kanji will be ready (require 100% radical guru to level, 90% kanji and I am also in favor of 90% Vocab guru from level before to level!)

Keeping the Vocab of previous level, and make it as a requirement to pass will stop script abuse
90% Guru to pass.

I guess 60 to me is just a “but why 60?”
With 100 there will be no more asking for more levels, only more items added to existing levels will feel natural =) (unlike this sentence  )

That’s interesting. I’d immediately thought of 120 because the levels are already split into two sections (except the fast levels) so it wouldn’t require any more work (except for @koichi writing more emails) but I admit that there is a certain attraction to the levels being a nice even percentage of the total - this would average out at something like 20 kanji and 60 vocab per level.

That’s more or less the same amount of kanji one gets upon level up anyway and just shy of the number of the number of vocab too, so would still be the case that every level feels like a fast level. The only issue I see is that it’d never be exactly 1% per level, because adding, removing, and shifting items is a regular occurance.

The items wouldn’t be exactly at 1%, but near enough, and number of levels/progression will always be more or less same as your level number =)

And weirdly, though same amount of items, it will somehow sound more attractive

We would need 4 more categories too then… (6 if using @Joeni’s 120 Levels, unless 20 levels per category)

Maybe Limbo, Purgatory, Bardo…

Search and found this fun list!

"What is the place between life and death called?

PEOPLE CALL THE Astral plane heaven, paradise, Elysium fields, the afterworld, the great beyond, the eternal rest, the great unknown, the happy hunting ground, the hereafter, hell, purgatory, hades, limbo, perdition, another world, a different plane of existence, and a thousand other things. Me, I just call it Home."

It’s funny, I was just commenting on @tls’s post earlier about how I felt being able to go up the categories (by levelling up) or down (by resetting) was analogous to the ten realms in the Lotus Sutra…

How do these modifications reflect with overall language proficiency exams for varying Levels as well? So many times I see vocab from later Levels coming up in beginner material on other language learning sites just because of their construction of radicals. I’ve been told many times not to rely solely on WaniKani for language proficiency exams, which is obvious, but are we getting closer to covering more material for these exams? With all these categories you’ve added, I wonder why you guys did not decide to add a category for crucial Kanji for these exams?

As you already said, Wanikani is not for learning the kanji you need for your test as quickly as possible. It’s there to give you the kanji you need long term in a structured way. From least complex to most complex.

If you want to know which items you’re still missing, it might be a good idea to look here and teach those few kanji to yourself before your test.

Furthermore, wanikani is not here to teach you vocabulary. It merely teaches you kanji to help you reinforce the readings, and understand the specific nuance of kanji when they are used in the real world. This is also why you see more vocab with more obscure readings, rather than a lot of common vocab that all have the same reading of a kanji.

If you want more vocab training, I heartily recommend tools like Torii or Kitsun.

I was so close… sniff sniff

The following subjects have now been published :tada:

They don’t seem to be working for me. I tried refreshing and logging out/back in, still showing zero.

It has begun!!

See you later beautiful numbers.

Usually it’s updated per user, so it might take a few minutes

So… I assume they’re showing up as locked until the job runs that checks for the unlocking requirements?

@conan Are they working for you now?

Not yet. /10char
