WaniKani Content Additions: Ongoing from April 29, 2021

Any more levels, or are we staying at 60?

When is the level system going to be eliminated?

…never? Is there even talk of that???

Ooh, then I’m looking forward to that.

I hope not

Staying at 60 for now at least

How’s this - divide level content in half, now there’s 120 levels.

Pros:

  • Levels feel faster
  • Leaderboard threads get more interesting
  • Everyone likes big numbers
  • Koichi gets to write 60 more level up emails

Cons:

  • None, this is clearly a perfect plan

I … actually like this idea.

Or require you to guru vocabulary to level up too.

Because I’m level 5 but haven’t even touched level 4 vocab really.

By splitting it into separate things you could say “guru 30 of 35 kanji and 50 of 60 vocabulary to level up”.

Then lower the content per level (add 40 level and redistribute the content so it’s spread out more) so the max level is 100, with less content per level, but requiring a better understanding (guru vocab).

Maybe that’s dumb ? I dunno.

I wish I had to guru vocab to level up, since I find kanji way easier than vocab.

(This would mean making vocab available at the same time as Kanji, otherwise the amount of time per level up would double. - or alternatively requiring you to guru the vocab from the previous level in order to level up. (so to hit level six guru vocab from level 4, for level 7 guru vocab from level 5 and so forth)).

I am on level 15, do these new words from level 1 to 10 will eventually appear for me on lessons?

Yes, all the new words up to your level (so up to and including level 15) will be added to your lesson queue, just as long as you’ve passed the kanji in the vocabulary

Only issue I see with this idea is hitting guru in order to level up would still take 7 days.

Therefore, it would take 2x as long to get to level 120 with the same amount of content.

Sure you could reduce the SRS stage required to level up or reduce the time between reviews so every level is a fast level.

Or alternatively remove radicals so that Kanji is available right away to level up.

But I think the Radicals, SRS requiring Guru and the time between reviews is key for WaniKani.

So maybe it’d actually feel slower to double the amount or levels due to those things haha .

Edit: Worth noting this also applies to my idea too, but mine also requires hitting guru with vocab

I’m on lunch break from packing and painting hehe

It was mostly a joke of an idea, to be fair, it would result in levelling taking the same time, with the same information, it would purely be aesthetic, hehe.

I always recommend that people make sure to split their vocab lessons up so that they do all their current level vocab before they level up. Of course, when you level up, you unlock the vocab related to the kanji you unlocked after you guru’d the radicals, so you’ll always have some vocab from the previous level when levelling up.

One thing to note is that WaniKani is specifically a kanji learning platform first and foremost, with the vocab just there to reinforce the common kanji readings. I think most people probably find vocab harder, in general, but what you’re really doing is practicing readings that you didn’t learn with the kanji.

Kanji lessons are already split into two batches for levelling, if you think what happens when you level up. You get the first batch with the radicals and then the second batch as you guru the radicals they’re built on. So the time to Guru a kanji is actually 3days 10 hours:

Unlock Kanji = 0hrs
Apprentice 1 → 2 = 4hrs later
Apprentice 2 → 3 = 8hrs after that
Apprentice 3 → 4 = 23hrs after that
Apprentice 4 → Guru = 47hrs after that

I usually try and balance my vocab learning properly but due to the stresses of moving I haven’t even touched a lot of them.

I have 135 lessons 70+ are level 4 vocab bit when I finally get to my parents and settle there in a day or so I’ll make an extra effort to get through these .

To be honest there is so much vocab per level (100+?) I forget that WaniKani is primarily for Kanji.

It could easily be seen as both, that’s how I’ve looked at it to be honest! And I think they should emphasise and advertise it as both because they provide so much detail with the mnemonics, sample sentences and then of course the free forum which is easily as useful as the main site itself in my honest opinion.

The value or WaniKani in my opinion is greatly increased because of you and everyone else here helping each other on the forums :D.

If you look at all the words on WaniKani + what you are adding, there are 58 words tha end in -aru (not counting words where the “a” sound comes from a kanji instead of a hiragana letter). Of these, 53 are intransitive verbs and 5 are transitive verbs. Furthermore, for 2 of those 5 transtive verbs (the two ending in “になる”), the “a” sound actually does come from a kanji but WaniKani chose to write the kanji in Hiragana. So there are really only 3 exceptions to the rule on WaniKani. So it is an exceptionally good rule of thumb that verbs ending in -aru where the “a” does not come from a kanji are almost always intransitive verbs.

Another exceptionally good rule of thumb is that verbs ending in -す are almost always transitive. Of the 123 current + planned verbs on WaniKani that end in -す and are part of a transitivity pair, 116 are transitive, 4 are both transitive and intransitive, and 3 are intransitive. So again, it is an exceptionally good rule of thumb.

I think it would make sense to put verbs that follow either of these rules of thumb first, since they are easy and knowing them first makes it easier to do the harder verb in the transitivity pair by process of elimination.

I have the same feel and intended to have a word on this in my future level 60 thread.
Fast levels feels so good. That quick level up is a great feeling.

I honestly think WK would gain a lot to multiply the number of levels by decreasing the load on each one (and having all levels with the same rules as the fast ones).
If I feel that good with a close to max speed (7d on normal and 4d on fast), the gain would be even more signifiant for all the folks going at a more leisurely pace.

I’m trying to shove more bunches of buck into my laptop, but it refuses to accept them telling me I’m already lifetime subscribed.

Would it be too difficult to implement a second level path strictly for the vocabulary? Like, person X is level 10 kanji but level 2 vocab, if they tend to lag behind in vocab a lot (either by choice, or because they are just not as fast at learning it)

It would give a possibly more accurate view of where you are, would not affect general level speed, but would encourage people to work on vocab too because it gets you its own special levels.

Reduces power creep

Surprised @Joeni didn’t suggest to do a blizzard and do a number squish “the numbers are getting too high therefore the new max level is now 30”.

The irony wasn’t lost on me that my suggestion was the opposite for what Blizzard did when they reduced max level in World of Warcraft from 120 to 60, haha.
