WaniKani App stopped working completely

Hey guys, I love WaniKani and I’ve been using it for about a month now. However, the WaniKani app has stopped working completely for me. Nothing loaded at all, so I deleted the app and reinstalled it, however, now I can’t log into the app because it gets stuck at the loading screen. Had anyone else had a similar issue and is there a fix?

Which one are you using?

When you say app, do you mean on phone? There is no official WK app, just the website. If you’re struggling with one of the phone apps, you should find its home thread in the Third Party API section to pose your question there. ^^ That way the creator and other app users will have a chance to see your question.

And there’s probably already a thread for that specific app.

EDIT: Oh you said that.

Since this seems to be about the phone app, I’ve moved the thread out of Bug Reports and into Third Party Apps. ^^

The name of the app is just WaniKani. I thought the app was official? Now that I think about it that makes sense that it’s not the official one.

I guess this is the app you’re referring to? This is the only exact match for “Wanikani” on iOS, no app matches on Android.

This is the community thread of this app, but there hasn’t been much activity recently: New iOS app

I don’t own iOS devices so I can’t say for sure, but it seems that the community is using Tsurukame these days, you should maybe look into it: [iOS] Tsurukame - native app with offline lessons and reviews

Thanks a lot, I will use this one instead. My bad with the WaniKani app, I thought it was official for some reason.

Sorry to bother you again, but Tsurukame says “an error fetching API key” when I try to login. How do I fix this?

@DD_Owl  Considering they said they don’t own an ios device, I’m sure you’ll have more luck on the official thread!

(Didn’t mean to reply to you, Omun… sorry.)

I skimmed the Tsurukame thread to see if it’s a known issue. It seems that the API key is retrieved by the app by using the Settings page. Since the page was updated recently (and the management of Personal Access Tokens too), I think it broke the login part of the app.

Indeed! @davidsansome might be able to give you more details about this error.
In the meantime, I think that you’re out of luck, and maybe need to use the website on your phone.

Yep sorry about that API key error - it was caused by the recent WaniKani API key changes. I’ve got a fix that’s waiting for App Store review now, so hopefully it’ll be available in a couple of days!
