Vocabulary kanji for population and artificial

Hi guys,

Is it just me or is the vocabulary kanji for artificial and population the same?

I’m confused - I typed the same (じんこう) for both and the quiz gave me a green pass…

Thanks for clarifying this.

Artificial - 人工 - じんこう
Population - 人口 - じんこう

The second kanji just happen to have the same readings here, though obviously the first kanji is the same in both words

Welcome to the wonderful world of Japanese homophones! there are many

Radish8 answered it. I’ll just add an English equivalent:

“there”, “their”, and “they’re”. Different words, same pronunciation.

Regarding 人工 and 人口:
じんこう is just a way of writing the pronunciation.

There are so, so many of these. When I first started learning Japanese and wanted to try to play a game, I picked some that only used kana thinking it would be easier to understand because hey, I can sound out everything right? I can just look up the words I don’t know! I didn’t realize the world of hurt that I was in for. Now having the kanji makes life somewhat easier when picking out just what じんこう (or whichever homophone) we’re talking about.

If I were groundskeeper Willie, I’d throw you off my golf course for using a field hockey stick!

this community is awesome, I can search for anything and someone will have asked it. Always nice to feel I am not alone in learning.
