Thank you for sharing your concerns. The kanji versions will still be taught, but at a more suitable timing and and in a way that aligns with the learning progression. We appreciate your understanding and if you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to let us know. :bowing_woman::bowing_woman::bowing_woman:

What’s the plan for the verbal noun thing? Are all the する words coming out? How come a new type is being made for them? Thank you.

The concerns have been announced a lot until now…

Can we get a confirmation that an opt out for kana only words is getting worked on?

Also can we description of what features the replacement for the summary page is planned to have and an estimate of when it will be complete?

Forum post on this is coming soon! I’ll try to come back here and link it once it’s up as well. (If I don’t forget )

Did 誰 get moved to level 11? I saw it in my lessons today all of a sudden even though I’ve finished the kanji already, but I don’t see it listed in the content updates.

EDIT: I found it here: https://community.wanikani.com/t/wanikani-content-movements-wednesday-june-7-wednesday-july-12-2023/

I think you accidentally included the movements from last week in this post.

The movement of 誰 and its related items have been completed today and will be included in tomorrow’s content updates. Apologies for any confusion caused.

Kanji words of basic vocabulary are getting moved to later levels, because now their kana-only equivalents are already taught early on. Doesn’t sound to me like an opt out is planned as that would entail moving said kanji words back to earlier levels for the people not getting the kana vocabs, no?

While I admire that they’ve re-adjusted such kanji for typically kana-only words, and while for people levelling up all the way from 0-experience will probably find the kana-only words useful earlier on, that still doesn’t mean they couldn’t add an opt-out feature for those who’ve already learned such kana-only words.

Just because 未だ references the earlier まだ doesn’t mean that someone who already knows まだ should be forced to study it, just so that 20 levels later they can finally study 未だ and learn the kanji version and its related nuances.

They can maintain the new organization of levels and still allow folks to opt-out of (some, many, or all) kana-only words.

I get the feeling that the main reason they aren’t responsive to recent complaints is that the existing codebase is too legacy-fragile and the current developers don’t have enough experience/background-knowledge of it, nor enough development tool-support (such as automated software tests to ensure nothing gets broken when making changes), to have the confidence/ability to make such otherwise seemingly-simple changes.

I hope they’re recognizing their inability to respond to customer pain-points as the critical business issue that it is, and are taking steps to fundamentally fix their process until they can.

It’s like being unable to steer away from the iceberg ahead because the steering wheel got rusted stuck so the maintenance crew removed it ‘temporarily’ while the engineers are overhauling the power systems so they need to keep the engines running full-steam ahead just to keep the night lights on.

I am impressed by the number and quality of the updates lately: new and better mobile interface, shake animations for common mistakes, new kana only words, countless adjustments to the vocab and kanjis definition, level and descriptions. Finally wanikani isn’t receiving some much deserved love from the developers. Thank you .

Well then they should announce that they’ve decided to only pretend to consider an opt out for kana.

@Mods Will there be an opt out? Was it ever seriously considered?

The link to 他所 goes to an admin link instead of the regular WK link.

Fixed! Thank you for spotting. :bowing_woman:

I’m curious as to the logic behind these. 申し申し uses the 申 kanji, which is taught at level 4, and will obviously be burned long before anyone reaches 60. The only other words using 申 are 申す which is also taught at level 4, and 申し込む, which is taught at 34, but that makes sense since 込 is a level 32 kanji. Moving 申し申し to the highest extreme there is seems significant to say the least.

Also 未だ uses a level 7 kanji but moves to 28? Again, 未 should be well burned by that point. Just seems silly to move it so high when it isn’t a compound kanji word.

Even 残余 being moved up 31 levels is pretty extreme.

I guess I’d just like some more detail as to the reasoning behind the more extreme changes.

選ぶ currently only has “to choose” as accepted however I think “to select” should also be allowed since for 選択する, both to choose and to select are there by default.

This is another case of transitive vs intransitive. I think it’d be important to add this one to the forbid list.
