My start date on wanikani was about 2021-06-26 (1342 days ago)
although I did not take it very seriously until I completed the first 3 levels. Since then I moved to Japan (JET in Osaka), got married, had a kid and overall been very busy. In 5 or so months I will move back to America.I took my first JLPT test last summer, did okay but not great on the N3, kanji was my strength for sure though followed by reading then grammar and listening. Since then I have been listening to a lot more podcasts, watching more anime, playing games like éč»¢č£å¤ watching youtube videos and really just focusing on immersion. I completed WK (reached level 60) about 1 month ago. But I didnāt really let off the gas and just switched my priority to studying grammar and vocab on Bunpro lol. I want to be at an N2 level I think before I leave Japan. Not sure what Iām going to do with that if anything but it will be nice to know I put in the effort and did it. Wanikani was always the most consistent thing in my Japanese studies and I could feel myself getting better at reading. I didnāt match it with my other areas of study because none were as interesting as kanji and honestly I canāt write Kanji either, but I do feel like for the first time that I really understand most of the Japanese I see and hear around me. I havenāt quite mastered responding and speaking in a way that feels natural yet, I think some people are just better at that kind of thing or focus on it more. Grammar was always difficult for me regardless of language. It became a lot more difficult to study given the limited time I have at home. I basically have 1-3 hours of free time a night and I spend an hour and a half of it running to train for a marathon, but I spend that time running listening to podcasts sometimes so multi tasking is cool. Anyway, if I can do it, you can too so donāt give up.
Congratulations! Well done for making it to level 60 and for reaching N3.
Congratulations for making it to level 60! Am hoping to reach that at some point and good luck on your JLPT progress!
Congratulations on finishing! Itās always inspiring to read othersā stories, it keeps me motivated!
Congratulations!
Sounds like you had an amazing journey in Japan!
Iām in a similar position where I just moved to Tokyo last summer and am looking to stay here for a few years or possibly longer. My partner and I are planning on getting married and starting a family here at some point too, and we might return to Canada.
Itās great to hear that someone has been through this and is doing well!
Iām also currently working on getting to at least an N2 level, so Iāll be cheering for you!
I wish you and your family all the best, and thank you for sharing your story!
Congrats on making it to level 60! And for the many other achievements along the way. Sounds like you are aiming for N2 next, which is awesome! Take the break(s) you need of course, but keep at it!
