It’s been I feel like maybe a year and a half since I’ve actually done any reviews, and I’ve forgotten quite a lot. I’m not sure if I should reset to try and remember things or just jump back into reading material and brute force my way into remembering everything again.Thoughts?
One thing I’ve been thinking of doing post-level-60 is to use a self study script to quiz myself on items from previous levels, and if I get them wrong then I’d resurrect them. That way you’d only be resetting the items you’ve actually forgotten.
Well the thing is I also have nearly 5000 reviews, half of which are burn reviews and it would take forever to get through it all
In that case I’d recommend you also probably tackle those burn reviews, like maybe 100 or so a day. Since going through them all will take a long time, but so will resetting.
You could try picking up KameSame instead and doing reviews on new words you don’t know. It has a UI and SRS timer similar to WaniKani but the entirety of JMDict, as well as several lists to study from
Do you consume Japanese media? You might be better off just reading/watching/whatevering native Japanese content and adding kanji/words you want to learn individually to a separate SRS program like Kitsun or Anki.
I used to regularly read manga and Japanese stories and sometimes played Japanese games and understood them to a decent degree. I’m just not sure if I still remember enough for that to be viable anymore, but I guess I’ll try it and if that doesn’t work I’ll try coming back here and re-learning the content again.
Idk anything about KameSame but I have a lifetime subscription to Kitsun which is similar to WaniKani but allows you to entirely create your own cards which I really like. I’ll probably stick to it unless KameSame has anything really special that it’d be worth using over Kitsun
I find KameSame to be a fantastic site to accompany WaniKani. It even allows you to link your account to it.
You can work on a ranke of WK levels and… Well, see for yourself:
Another feature that should be useful to you is the placement test that allows you to instantly burn an item so it doesn’t show up in your reviews. Regardless what I believe you should do would be to slowly go through your pile of reviews as you look for these new sources (KameSame/Self-Study Plugin). And then reset if you still feel the need to afterwards.
I would at least try going through manga/anime again and pick up what you forgot. If that doesn’t work, then going back to SRS may be worth it, but I remember reading something that indicated language skills atrophy less than the speakers think they do, where those that haven’t used the language in years only score slightly worse on tests.
It seems cool, and if I hadn’t already been subscribed I might check it out but those don’t seem enough to get me to switch. There are plenty of awesome community decks on Kitsun that I like to use, and I especially like being able to create my own cards and customize everything myself. For example here’s a back of a card I made completely from scratch using Kitsun’s card editor.
The empty spaces are for extra notes and audio if present I believe
Yeah I definitely think I’ll do that, thanks for the input!
There’s no particular need to ‘switch’ since Kamesame is free. The biggest draw, in my opinion, is it’s not a flash card system, it’s exactly what WaniKani does, but in reverse - English prompt = Japanese, so it has the same not saying ‘oh, I knew that ‘ factor.
To add to that, OP could still use kitsun for whatever they’re currently using it for…
But there’s only so many hours in a day, so they might be better off just learning/re-learning stuff when it pops up in the wild!
Wait I’m confused, aren’t both Wanikani and KameSame both also flashcard systems? SRS by design uses flashcard systems right?
Hmm, I guess technically, though most systems I’d describe as flashcards just give you the thing you want to be tested on, you decide to yourself if you remember, then you click yes or no, rather than being tested.
There are SRSes that don’t use flashcards. Pimsleur was the first really popular SRS.
I’m with MegaZeroX on this. There is a time when the srs training wheels just have to come off. I’d try consuming media for awhile. Don’t worry about words you don’t understand so much. Look them up if you need to, but try to just enjoy the anime/manga/drama/book/game whatever. You will be surprised what you remember.
After you watch your shows and play your games you’ll have an idea of where to start reviewing and improving. Try to push yourself further with more complex games or writing.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some SRS. Its got me this far into Japanese. However, as I’m finding out myself you can’t srs yourself to complete comfort. Half of the people on this board are from non English speaking countries and we wouldn’t even know it. It’s a pia to make the transition but it seems you already are doing so.
If you are determined to jump back into the SRS fray, I recommend taking it easy, only reviewing items you completely forgot and doing some new items you encounter in media.
Good luck.
