Do you read the books you buy? Ehhmm… Well, you see, I was going to get around to those eventually… Just as soon as I place a new CDJapan order
This is the 積読 (tsundoku) reading thread, where we read books from our stockpile and cheer each other on!
The Rules
Post in this thread when you finish reading a book that was purchased or acquired before January 1st, 2026.
That’s it!
Is this a challenge thread?
Only if you want it to be! Feel free to create your own challenge in the comments below based on your goals and the state of your book collection. Or simply post here for some community support around whittling down that to-read pile. It’s up to you!
I’ve already been planning to take jan and knock out a bunch of stuff that I wanted to get rid of (at least for manga), so will definitely be tracking along here

That is, a lot! Like a lot a lot! By my count that’s 134 volumes of unread physical manga, much of which is still of significant reading difficulty Finishing my unread novel/lns is just unrealistic rn, so not even gonna worry about those yet
I have no illusions about ever actually finishing everything I own, but it’d be nice to at least finish a few of the things I know I am going to want to read and then be rid of, or some of the easier series that I enjoy but have kinda gotten put on the backburner.
In particular, I think I’d like to finish 化物語 | L31, ラブひな | L23, はちゅねミクの日常ろいぱら! | L25, 名探偵コナン|L27, and 小林さんちのメイドラゴン|L26, along with anything I only have 1-2 volumes of. Those are all series that I kinda want to finish and then probably sell. I try to only keep things that I think I’ll want to revisit or really like the art of or want to own the full series of, and other than kobayashi I’m pretty sure I will not be keeping these or buying more volumes of the incomplete ones.
We have a similar thread going on in the Bunpro forums. It’s not going well. Many of us are in book jail.
My problem is that I have a lot of stuff that’s harder than my current reading ability and I’m working my way up. While I haven’t bought anything lately, I haven’t finished anything lately either. I’ll report back on my progress at some point.
Nice! I haven’t looked at the forums there much yet but I’ll check it out.
Here in the 2026 積読 thread we will take a rehabilitative approach to book justice, where no one goes to jail, but is welcome to discuss their book-buying tendencies in a non-judgemental space
No worries, books you buy in 2026 can be read in the 2027 積読 thread
Gonna put a home thread here, but I’m afraid to even consider cataloging everything I have, so I might just get things down that I’m thinking of reading in 2026.
This is coincidentally also my goal for 2026
I vowed not to buy new things (book clubs and new instance in a series I’ve read are exceptions of course) until I was done with my pile.
I might consider being a bit more loose on that rule and allow buying again if I have read, say, 95%, or 80%, of everything I’ve already bought, but let’s see when I get close to the mark, right now I’m barely at 50% for the manga and 26% for the Visual Novels
This is a nice idea, I have some books that needs to be read.
There is no hard timeframe for me when I will do so but I will try to finish them.
For making my life more easy I have made a list on learnnatively. There still books that need to be added. (I have shipment that even did not unbox XD. No space in my ikea bookshelf)
Because of multiple reasons I decided to crack down on my books that I bought.
That is why I kid you not, I finished my first book ever that’s of substance. (ignoring Tadoku books)
My first ever time tracking registration dates: 25.07.2024. This was long overdue.
But don’t be fooled my dedication to this book was low and was wafering because of the low kanji, so I have yet to experience a book full of kanji. If you discount satori reader that is.
Reading time was 49 hours, tbh reading so few kanji is not something I would recommend.
Story wise because it’s a informative book some parts were interesting and thus easier to read.
There here some difficult parts but that is what is to be expected, coming form satori reader harder stories the grammar was really basic. I see that as good sign.
There 4 things I will do for my second book that is read a more difficulty book, read a book with more kanji and audio (satori reader spoiled me in that fact). And that is more interesting.
Coming to my second thing: I will read ふしぎ駄菓子屋 銭天堂 1 | L23 that I have bought already some time ago. Fitting this thread topic. I am sure I will get humbled may times but that is to be expected. It’s not time to read yet but sync my audiobook with the ebook and read ttsu. From what I recall that should be possible.
I’m under the belief I don’t have a big tsundoku, but that’s most likely because I’m not even looking at it It’s probably like an ice berg in the ocean. There’s probably only 10% of it I’ve registered on Natively or Bookmeter, and then 90% of it in my 購入済み on Bookwalker, haha
This made me check and aside from my 582 tsundoku on bookmeter, it looks like I also have a few hundred books in my 購入済み on bookwalker (I had to check to make sure it wasn’t four digits yet but I can confirm it’s still only 900 But I have read a few of those so it’s slightly fewer that’s actually tsundoku). I have A few hundredslightly over a thousand about 1400 books on kindle too though (but a few already read in that count too). I guess there’s a few physical books I haven’t added to bookmeter yet either. I also have a few visual novels I haven’t played yet, but not that many.
I have stacks of books in every corner of my apartment and it’s easy to lose track of how many Japanese books I have floating around in them. About two years ago, I read and purged a big number of tsundoku books (though they were all manga and textbooks), so the stack isn’t as big as it used to be. But I’ve also been buying a new volume here and there as I come across them, so the stack isn’t as small as it used to be, either. I’m hoping I can finish at least a few of these this year and pass them on to another reader like I did with my previous books.
These are exclusively (other than my Natively priority list) physical copies. My digital bookshelf is simply none of my business right now
There is no doubt in my mind that I will stumble across a few more books that were hiding over the course of the year. There are a few titles, like ダ・ヴィンチ・コード, that I know I own but I can’t find my copies of Where could they be…
I would say I’m currently working on the コーヒーが冷めないうちに series, but even getting into the first one, my lack of depth in vocabulary feels pretty evident. Here’s to trying to get through the first book within winter vacation!
I’ve been pretty good about reading the books I’ve bought/acquired this year, but this stack still remains on my desk. I just started what used to be the top of the stack, 古都 (now finished), so it’s unlikely I’ll reduce it by more than 1 by the end of the year.
