Study Log of Madness

Dec 20-21 '24[]:

The good thing about this break is I’m getting to watch anime for 5hrs+ everyday. I’m glad to encounter words I just learned and from previous lessons, too. I remember I was doing a review and I forgot the reading for 格 and it was mentioned in an ep and I was able to get that in the review. I should also update my natively for these.

  • WaniKani reviews in the morning and evening
  • Did no lessons
  • Watched EP08-11 of Mashle: Magic and Muscles
  • Watched EP17-20 of Ron Kamonohashi

I’ve binged watch anime last week and my sister and I are already on the second anime this week haha It’s good spending time with her, with all her schooling done and basically entered her unemployed era :sparkles: so there’s not much to be done aside form sending out resume and watching anime fro morning to evening.

Although all that anime watching has kept me from sticking to my review schedule so I should start with Level 15 this week. :muscle:

  • WaniKani reviews in the morning and evening
  • Did no lessons
  • Watched EP12-17 of Mashle: Magic and Muscles
  • Bunpro reviews

Btw, I got myself a Kindle because I wanted to spend less time on my mobile games and focus on reading only. Technically, I can do it on my iPad but there’s just too much distractions haha I’m currently on a reading spree for Danmei novels but if you have some JPN novel suggestions, maybe you can help a sister out?

  • WaniKani reviews in the morning and evening

omg can I please ask for some recommendations? I’ve read a few, and I’m currently reading Golden Stage and it’s Adorable, but I’m trying to find something that’s more dramatic and heavy on court politics/angst :running_man:

I’m currently reading Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System hahaha Seven Seas has a lot of really good titles! But personally, I can vouch for these:

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation

  • Watched Untamed, the live action drama version of it and fell in love with the series
  • Also available in animation and manhua version

Heaven Official’s Blessing

  • Watched the anime in Netflix
  • The manhua version is currently ongoing
  • Really good story line, I think it’s one of the best love stories done by MXTX

SVSS (current read)

  • Super funny but the weird musings of the main character might throw you off haha
  • No anime, and manhua was discontinued I think
  • Reading the novel version

Husky and his White-cat Shizun

  • I’ve heard great things about this one, and I think I read the first few chapters of the novel but I stopped in favor of SVSS.
  • This is a bit similar to The Wife Comes First plotline but it’s in a different setting

The Wife Comes First

  • this one I read from a manhua and I’m a sucker for bittersweet romance
  • Have yet to read the novel

I’ve heard of 2ha as well, but the last one is very new to me! I’m just very happy to talk to someone else who also enjoys danmei lol

AHH that’s great! I actualy read the first book but I stopped because of Life stuff so I’m rereading it again haha

Yup I accidentally found it when I was in a manga reading spree (I get burst of enthusiasm to read different types of materials throughout the year haha) and I only found out lately it came from a novel, too!

Whew. Hi, it’s me again haha. Took almost 3 weeks of vacation from Japanese and I already have 462 reviews waiting for me haha. I’ve been meaning to get back on track since last week but I’ve had such a terrible work week that all I could do was recover from the overall stress by reading and playing some comfort games on my laptop. However, this week I do want to jumpstart my Japanese studies.

The first order of business is to tackle down that 460+ reviews and then take on lessons to level up to 16 this week. Hopefully, I can manage to insert this in my daily routine. I also got stressed last week since I had to file our Tourist visa requirements to the Japanese embassy. I got so complacent last year because we had our requirements completed by then and we thought we could just apply anytime. We’ll have our trip by March so I hope to complete a couple of levels by then.

Woo! Welcome back and good luck with the reviews!

I hope that the break left you feeling more energized and that you’ll be able to scale that wall of 460 reviews, slow and steady wins the race ^^

Work up those reviews until the March trip!

Yo! Hope you haven’t given up just yet!

So um… haha

I suppose that’s the bulk of reviews I have to do to catch up. I mean, I don’t mind. I am fully aware of my choices and I don’t regret it one bit. Life became overwhelming and it made me pause Japanese learning for some time. But it didn’t stop me from consuming Japanese media. So perhaps a bit of life update as well.

Feb 2025 - I was preparing for a business trip so understandably this is the time I stopped my lessons. The business trip was a product training at Thailand and I had to fly from my country and attend the 3-day training. But in reality I stayed there for about five days before returning home.

March 2025 - This is the ultimate reason why I started up my Japanese lessons on September last year. We planned a trip to Japan and we went there during the first week of March. It was still chilly but we were able to see the Cherry Blossoms bloom at Tokyo Disneyland. The past five months of WaniKani didn’t prepare me for casual conversations but it was helpful with picking out words when asking the locals, especially for directions. I remember “migi” and “hidari” being used when I asked them for the toilet. And yes it was, トイレはどこですか all the time at Tokyo Disneyland haha! I also was in awe when I recognize some kanjis in the wild. But it left me thinking wistfully about the wanikani lessons I knew I was neglecting. Needless to say, I loved every moment I had during my first Japan trip. We didn’t get to stay very long because I had only a handful of vacation leaves. But Japan truly changed my view of the world, and I find myself wishing to go back there just to escape the reality of my own country.

April to Present 2025 - I’ve started taking my health seriously for the past four months. I was feeling too lethargic, perpetually tired, and lacking in energy. I had a check up with my doctor and he told me to incorporate some moderate exercise in my routine. I’m being honest when I say I dislike doing exercise really, but I know I should do it. So my priority was to pick an exercise that would be low effort for me, meaning I don’t have to schedule it strictly, or pay for a lot like a gym, or to travel to another place to do the exercise. So I happened to picked running as my main exercise and before I knew it, I’ve been running consistently for 3 months now. I do take breaks from running for injury prevention so it’s been going well. I’ve lost around 16kg since April and I started seeing some non-scale results by now. I’ve actually decommissioned 3 of my old pants for new ones in smaller sizes.

During this time, I also watch anime whenever I do indoor runs on the treadmill. It’s incredibly boring (imo) compared to outdoor runs so I have to watch something to pass the time. I guess because of the previous lessons I had, I could pick up some words and phrases but I can’t decipher how it is being used. I just knew the dictionary meaning and it leaves me feeling frustrated because I could have learned this. But there’s no point in crying over spilled milk. I want to pick up where I left off of here.

So I’ll start with the reviews first before doing my lessons. Maybe a short update here and there. I’m not very good at keeping journals, that I have proven to myself time and time again. But I appreciate the words of encouragement a lot so yes! I still have the desire to continue learning.

@Gigahercz Haha thank you! I will. Sorry it has been so long!

@GolyBidoof The 460 reviews ended up to 2333 so yep it’s like 3 Mt. Fujis stacked on top of each other haha

@pemBOO Hi my friend and happy cake day to you! I have not given up, only parked for a while haha sweats

Thank you, I’ve missed you too! love2
I know all too well how it feels to return from a long break
I hope you’d be able to get back in no time without having to do a reset, but if you start having too much troubles, remember that reset is always an option – to any level you would be comfortable with!
Anyway, best of luck with your studies! wricat

Welcome back! Good to see you again!
Nice that you picked up running, I can vouch for the short terms and long terms benefits (picked it up too 15 years ago already and still at it! I get mad if I can’t run!) :woman_running:

Welcome back!! Great to hear that you had an awesome trip to Japan and have been improving your health! I still haven’t been to Japan myself, so I’m jealous  that’s quite the mountain of reviews to come back to, but the goal is learning, not leveling up or even hitting 0 reviews left in the pile. So I hope during your process of whittling away at the stack you don’t get bogged down thinking about how much is left and can instead focus on the individual words and kanji as they come up. And there’s always the reset option as was mentioned, too! You can do it!
