Heyya, looong time lurker / first time poster here. I thought that i throw my hat and my inconsistent study log in here. I started (actually) learning japanese like 3 years ago. Figured that now after i passed N4 last DEC 2024 (LITERALLY 94/180 sheeeeeeeeeesh), i might take things seriously and aim for N3 by DEC 2025 / JUN 2026. I never ever force myself to learn japanese, as in every day 2 hour study session like im in school. So here’s hoping im able to achieve that lofty and grand goal with a more laid back / immersive approach.
For background context, i learn japanese through wanikani, tae kim grammar guide, various manga, various anime, various japanese songs, and the occasional JLPT textbook. I started learning japanese in my vocaloid / miku ooeeoo phase. Y’know, to sing 千本桜 and World is mine at 3 am during school days. I tried (and purchased) JLPT N5 & N4 textbook, tthose 日本語総まとめ books, as well as test papers legally. But i ended up not doing any of them, Instead relying on wanikani, taekim, and stuff i learnt from manga and anime to help me.
Like, at first when i started learning JP (during the first few days on wanikani), i was like “There’s no way i can learn this shit. Like, how many kanjis? You crazy?” Ntm, the subscription price when converted to my currency is pretty high. But nowadays, after (checks wkstats) 750 DAYS??!!?! Anyway, after years of casually doing this. I can (finally) read mangas without resorting to dictionaries. Granted the mangas i read doest use complex words (onimai and jahy sama). But still, it feels good.
But yeah, i have a lot on my plate. Im hoping that i can give update here once a week / fortnight on what i use to study, general progress, any cool stuff i find.
Bai bai~~

Finished level 20 a week ago. Only took like 20 days ish??? Really fast considering in the past it takes me like 40+ days to level up. Then again, the with such haste comes the burden of 200+ reviews (pain peko
). But hey, doing it in between other things in life did make it much more bearable. Imagine spending 1 hour straight on reviews. I would go insane.
In other news, im progressing well into reading Bocchi the rock anthology volume 1. it was alot harder than expected, with it not having ふりがな and realising that some jokes on the anime doesnt exist in the book. BUT luckily i have jisho ready AND i watched the anime. Also reading onimai volume 5 atm.
For studies wise, i managed to came up with a method that worked on me and continues to work. Like to preface, i HATE long lessons, rigid materials, or having to fully dedicate a portion of my day to it. My adhd ass hates it. So after *cough* legally *cough* obtaining 日本語総まとめ N3 book (for 文法、漢字、聴解、読解、語彙). I structured it in a way that all i have to is one lesson (or one 日目) per day / few days, depending if i can sit still, for all 5 types. This makes it so i can do any amount i want per day, without burning myself out, nor beating myself up for missing a day.
Thats all, see you all in how many days in takes for me to finish bocchi the rock
Bai bai~~~
Note: I dont usually condone sailing the high seas and becoming captain blackbeard. But for this once, i don the sailor’s hat, cuz omg the books are expensive as hell here. I also plundered some Japanese test papers. Hopefully i can build up my confidence with it before attempting the actual N3 test later

Same! Finding a few minutes here and there is so much more manageable.
I have finally accepted recently that this is also me. I always THINK that setting aside a long block of time will be better, but it never is.
Sounds like you’ve got a good plan to follow!

Heyyyyyyyyyyyy i rember
.
Ive been watching QuizKnock’s videos for 5hat past 3 months. And man it feels weird to understand atleast what they are saying to a certain degree (still cant answer any of the questions posed though, tsk shame). I especially watch japanese language specific videos(shocking, i know). The way they think of kanji is impressive, but also perplexing.
Like, what is 冠?what is 編? I kinda wished wanikani mentioned these somewhere. I also REALLY like when they are perplexed by some of it. Like, theres like a vid where the question was “木+田 ト+火+ロ” and i was like “wtfff?” Before revealing that the answer is “東京” and i went “ohhh… Huh?”
Fun stuff. Highly reccomend it. Vids short enough while having enough meat in them to make a great watch. Better than watching vtubers. Feels less “oooooo watch woman / man play games while being bombarded by supas”, and more “7 dudes, in a room. Answering quizzes and having a time of their life”
Hopefully i dont forgor
じゃ〜 また来週ね〜

On an unrelated note, i am going to purposely use kansai dialect in day to day convo. Like, when i speak standard JP, it just sounded wayy too formal. Even when using casual words and grammar. Besides, Kansai ben just sounds cooler anyway. ほんまにめっちゃかっこええやんwwwwww.
