After taking 3 years off from studying Japanese to study for medical school, I decided to reset my WaniKani account to level 1. I was about level 30 when I dropped off, after living in Japan for 2 years. I really miss studying the country and the language, but I really needed to lock in on my other studies over the past few years. I forgot how exasperating slow WaniKani is in the beginning, I really wish I could speed up the pace just a bit, but I knew that starting from zero would make me feel better than picking a random level to drop into after spending so much time away. Hoping that I can make WaniKani into a daily routine again and complete all 60 levels in about 1 year’s time. I’m documenting this reset here to help solidify my new commitment to restart my journey towards kanji literacy again! I would appreciate any tips on how you all have found ways to self-motivate and make it to the end of this awesome program. I missed it a lot here! Studying Japanese was the one thing that made my undergraduate years enjoyable. I’m hoping I can find that magic again and become immersed in the ways I used to.
As someone who has done the same thing myself (also dropping back to level 1 from about level 30) it is easier the second time around! Enjoy your review. Keep walking and you’ll be back to crazy numbers of reviews in no time.
only do radicals and kanji as you need them to level up
always use the lesson picker and add only the lessons you do not know (especially if you’re already really advanced), you’re here to complete your knowledge, not have a 100% award.
make liberal uses of userscripts to tailor you experience.
Been a few years since I last did WK. I’ve been living in Japan for 13 years now and restarted my kanji journey to get it done already. Had 1k reviews today, a 95% hit rate (and some baffling surprise misses) and about 500 still left to do. And that’s at level 9.
