Please note that although this uses an Anki deck, it is NOT a deck of vocab. This is a deck of links to the JapanesePod101 lessons, so you can periodically re-listen to the dialog audio and grade yourself on how well you did. Yes, this requires a subscription so it’s just for other people who have it ![]()
All of the cards in this deck are tagged with their official Level and their Series name.

Extra deck:
The extra deck provides additional audio-only series. The requirement for inclusion are:
-
Must offer dialogs
- I made an exception for one series, and that’s Yojikukugo, for this use the Review track.
-
Must not be extremely redundant with similar content from the main path or another selected extra series
Series that do themed single sentences, but are not in a dialogue format, are not included.
The second requirement is primarily because Level 1 has a LOT of extra series that cover the same material.
Unlike the main path, which is ordered by what the JP101 team officially recommends, the Extra paths are mostly order by season number. So you may notice the difficulty varying more from season to season.
Additionally, the official site does have some lessons in the wrong order. Since some of them are continuous stories, this can seem weird. For example in the intermediate path, two lessons are in the wrong order on the site which means that a character suddenly appears, and then the next episode she’s “introduced”. I therefore fixed that in my deck, which means it might appear like I’m “skipping” lessons sometimes even though I’m actually just fixing what the JP101 team messed up ![]()
Level 1 Intensive is Level 1.1, which is an actual path in the site that follows Gengo Japanese.
Level 1 Extra 2 is what I chose to call Beginner Season 1 as it starts extremely easy. The first 30 or so lessons are easily considered Level 1, and by the end of it is ends up as an easier Level 2 series. It is even easier than Gengo Japanese, which is considered 1.1.
So this is what’s actually included

Why no video?
-
Because the focus of this deck is to listen
-
Many of the videos are not easily rewatchable because the Japanese part is not separate from the English explanation
-
Because in Level 1 there’s way too much video content for me to sift through for whatever is actually worth it
I am working on a video deck but it will be Level 3+ only. More than likely it’ll end up being:
-
Level 3:
- Japanese Listening Comprehension for Beginners
-
Level 4:
-
Japanese Listening Comprehension for Intermediate Learners
-
iLove J-Drama
-
-
Level 5:
- Japanese Listening Comprehension for Advanced Learners
Levels 3 & 4 (especially level 4) don’t have as many audio series, so adding some of the video content makes sense.
Study Tips:
Tip #1
When doing a card as a “New” lesson in Anki (whether it’s actually new to you or not), add any words you’d like to study to an SRS.
I recommend JPDB for this, but of course you can use any tool that allows custom vocab flashcards.
I’m using MaruMori because I wanted to consolidate, but I was using JPDB before it so it could parse out the transcripts. If you use some other flashcard site, go ahead, but I would recommend using one that has a unified dictionary so that you’re not adding duplicate cards if the same word appears in multiple lessons.
Tip #2
Set up your limit to 1 new card and 1 review card
What? Why so little?
Think of your limit as a daily goal.
Then you can use any extra study time with Custom Decks - and you can save them to rebuild them later!
I have loads of Custom Study decks (in blue) to do extra reviews. Especially since on the weekend, I don’t do any new cards, so I do more reviews.
Likewise I have saved Custom Study decks for when I want to do extra new cards, to target specific series that I want to complete.
Recommended Study Path:
#1 Use the main track
#2 Use the extra tracks only if you want extra practice (or you’re a completionist like me)
My recommendation is to actually do it when you’re a bit higher. So for example, if you’re halfway through Level 2, and you want to brush up on basics or learn extra vocabulary, add Level 1 Extra or Extra 2 to your routine. But only do the dialogue, not the lesson, and just read the site to learn any missing vocab. If you’re really confused, then sure do the lesson, but chances are you won’t be.
For example, as of writing this, I’m in level 4. But because I redid this entire deck from scratch I lost my progress and I’ve been doing at least 1 lesson from each level. Levels 1-3 are review so I never listen to their full podcast when doing them as “new”.
#3 If you feel a card no longer has study value, Suspend/delete it.
