Show me your books!

The 恩田陸 book has a very different cover to the digital version :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
Totally different vibe (and way cuter).

I knew the Tanizaki cover was a Bungo Stray Dogs tie-in, but is the 恩田陸 cat cover one too?

Sorry, not a horror/suspense - it’s actually a book about Moon Cats :full_moon: :cat:

I kept forgetting to photo my new books after I got them, so this probably isn’t all the ones I’ve acquired since my last post (at least, that I still have in my possession; there were a few I ended up selling), my memory ain’t that great. My bday was in August + I don’t have enough self-control, so I feel like I got more than usual in a nearly-3-mo. period. Well, several of them were bought with gift cards, so there’s that, at least.

(Yup, I’m missing Δ帽子 vol 7. I didn’t realize CDJapan didn’t have it, so I didn’t get it when I got 8, which I knew they didn’t have, elsewhere. Ay.)

Sorry for the confusion, I made a mistake due to being distracted while replying!

I forgot I could check my 積読本 on bookmeter. Unless I read any that weren’t part of a series (and didn’t sell) and don’t remember, this should be the rest of them

As an update to this, cdjapan refunded me the excess charge as cdjapan points. So I think I’ll count that as a win (I’m very likely to place another order before the points expire in a year’s time…)

Ended up buying my ”forever goal series” entirely on paper. 星界の{紋章戦旗断章} — a space opera from the 1990s, glad they were still being printed!

I never thought about books being tax reduced  but i guess i haven’t ordered that many books so it should be ok. also if i had to pay VAT when received DHL or whoever would have put on some handling charge which would annoy the hell out of me even more than the few yen spend more

The way international sales generally work is that you’re not liable for sales taxes in the source country[*], but you are liable for import taxes/customs duty/etc in the destination country. Traditionally the import duty would be handled by the courier (DHL, Fedex, post office) who would then charge an extra admin fee for the privilege. The modern system that’s come in in the last year or so is that the seller is supposed to charge the appropriate amount in advance (for small value shipments, something like ~GBP130 or less; high value stuff is still pay-by-courier). When it works, this is great, because as the customer you know in advance how much it’s going to be, and there’s no annoying courier admin fee. Amazon JP orders now work this way. However cdjapan haven’t quite got their system working properly yet, so it’s not accounting for cases where the import tax value depends on the type of goods.

For sales specifically of books to the UK, UK import taxes match VAT in being zero rated for books, so even under the old “pay via courier” system there was no tax to pay anyway, and the new system isn’t a huge benefit. But if you buy non-book stuff (toys, CDs, merch, etc) you no longer have to play customs fee roulette.

[*] This is only true if the sale is direct from the seller to you in a different country. Setups with a third-party shipper, the way honto does with buyee, result in you paying Japanese sales tax, because the sale is treated as a within-Japan one.

Back in the UK after a trip to Japan, and let’s just say I made good use of my luggage allowance :joy:

ダイヤのA arrived a few days earlier than expected, though it’s not like I could have read enough to keep my 積読 from going over 300 anyway (it currently stands at 334—340 if you include 読んでる本). If I finish it, this will be the longest series I’ve read, as it’s 2 volumes longer than HQ.

Update: my Tokyo Otaku Mode order from 3 months ago arrived today too! Luckily w time to spare before the GSNK club gets to vol 7, but I took that risk when I decided to order the slow way

weirdly now i want to go to japan just to go to book off and buy books…

Does it help any to know that you can use a proxy shipper with bookoff online?

I said in the read every day topic that I did not want to end up buying this series as an ebay lot. Anyway.

That’s not weird at all.

Posting to remind myself to clean up my collection for display. It’s all haphazardly strung around my office right now…

I would probably try the US Book-offs first.

If the US were closer than japan it might be an option, but there is no real difference.

My first batch. Riding the Bleach hype.
