Scaling the review mountain part 6 - the race to zero

I lost power this evening (using phone tethering to post this). Hopefully it will come back soon.

Update: Fortunately, the power came back after 2.5 hours.

Apprentice under 300 for the first time I believe!

You know once it gets under 100, your review pile will be virtually indistinguishable from anyone else’s right?!

Really great to see you still going at this mountain.
Have a nice day.

Today, I guru’d my first level 49 kanji. It only had one lesson (陛下), which of course only took a few seconds to go through, but that one lesson was enough for the clock to tick over from 7:48 to 7:49, and thus consistent with past practice, I am counting that as a minute spent doing lessons, so today’s post has “18m L1”, meaning 17 minutes of reviews and 1 minute of lessons, per the new format I made up (and retroactively added to previous posts as previously mentioned).

I also failed to guru 駅 today due to mistaking it for 訳. It’s annoying how often things like that happen.

This morning, I followed the banner to the forums and spent over an hour reading all the angry complaints about the UI changes, and thus I had no time to actually do reviews this morning. I guess I’ll have to start again tomorrow and see just how bad things are. The loss of the summary page at the end is going to really hit hard. I still can’t believe they would launch such a major change with no warning or beta, especially with such major regressions and negative feedback.

There was a warning, but it was a bit too abrupt, and more targeted at userscript developers.

Also, the review session itself does track accuracy, although it’s different to the summary page accuracy (summary page was percentage of subjects correct, review page is percentage of reviews correct).

There also was a beta, but it wasn’t very publicly advertised.

Yeah, I know, it was hidden in a post on the API forum in a locked filing cabinet with a sign saying “beware of leopard”. And they ignored the little feedback they got from the script developers anyway.

What I meant is that there was never any warning or beta for regular users. It wasn’t advertised with a banner on the front page like previous changes have been.

Wow, the new UI is really bad. The questions are in smaller text scrunched up at the top of the screen for no reason, and they’re not even consistently sized, the colors are somehow really garish now, the transitions are weird, etc. The new page for seeing the correct answer when you miss a question is so obnoxious that I often ended up advancing to the next question before I even saw the answer.

The lack of the summary screen at the end is also really jarring. It’s like if a videogame immediately booted you to the title screen after beating the final boss with no credits or cutscenes or ending at all.

And of course, that means that it is impossible to see how you did. How many reviews did I do? What was my accuracy? How many items did I burn? I have no idea. And of course it (was) useful for other stuff too. Like when after I leveled up a week or two back, I mentioned that I got 6 out of 9 lvl49 kanji right in one session. The only way I could see that is by counting them on the summary screen afterwards. I know several level 49 kanji came up for review this morning, but I have no idea what the actual number was and there is no longer any way to tell.

I’ve been quietly following you for a few months. You’re so close to 0 reviews remaining, so I hope you can power through these changes. We’re the same level now, so know there’s an annoyed bloke from Australia begrudgingly working through his reviews just as you are.

Today was my first full session after the changes and I guess I just have to get used to the new UI. There are still a bunch of things that bug me though. For example, I still can’t get over how the kanji questions appear in smaller text than the vocabulary questions now, which looks really amateurish.

The biggest issue though is that the popups when you get a question right or wrong that show you the new SRS level are now hard to read. It looks like they start out dark purple for some reason and slowly fade in to the normal green/red color. The upshot is that the majority of the time, I advance to the next question without seeing the popup and have no idea when I got it right or wrong or what the new SRS level is.

It’s not even like they’re that slow, just slow enough to be useless. The same is true of the cards at the bottom that you can open up to see the right answer. They don’t take that long to appear, but it is still slow enough that I often advance to the next question before seeing the answer, even when I specifically pressed the key to open it up after missing a question. Of course when I genuinely didn’t know the answer, I’ll just wait for it, but if I think I already what I got wrong, I’ll often just skip it. It’s hard to remember exactly how things were before, but I don’t recall ever seeing that before. Before, even if I was pretty sure what the right answer was, I would open it up just to double check.

Sometimes I wonder whether it is not that these even got slower but that advancing to the next question got faster, but there’s no way to know for sure, and the garish and unreadable color transitions on the popups after answering a question are certainly new.

Incidentally, I was wrong about the information card you can open at the bottom now just being a straight copy of the webpage you can go to outside of reviews, e.g. https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/尽力. On closer inspection, they are actually different, which makes it even weirder that they would change it, since they’re not saving code that way. The new review-bottom cards still seemed to be designed to just have the relevant information, they’re just a lot less compact than the old ones for no good reason, requiring more scrolling to see information.

The other major thing is that I got new lessons for the first time today, so I got to see what the new lesson screens looks like as well. In the past, I would almost always know that new lessons were coming after a review because I would see that I guru’d the relevant kanji when I answered it during the review, but now there is effectively no feedback during reviews, so it was a complete surprise.

Overall, lessons aren’t too bad, but I did get to see the removal of the enter key on lesson cards that I’d read about. For some reason, they decided that using enter to advance between lesson cards clashes with “expected browser behavior” and made everyone use the right arrow instead. However, you still have to use enter to advance after each question while doing the lesson reviews and to advance on the post review screen. It’s a very trivial issue in practice, but the transition is a bit weird.

On the bright side, it sounds like there have been some minor graphical fixes at least. Going by the feedback (i.e. complaint) thread, there was initially a distracting thick black border around the answer input box, which they have now changed to an unobtrusive light blue.

I noticed this morning that the kanji and vocab questions now use the same text size, so at least they managed to fix that, I guess.

Well, it looks like it has now been five and a half weeks and my review count is still at 376. I told you you were being wildly overoptimistic.

You’re well under 400 reviews though, and your apprentice count is right down.

Your reviews in next week count is still quite high, so I think you’re right not to just power through extra reviews right now, or it’ll come back to bite you.
