Today was my first full session after the changes and I guess I just have to get used to the new UI. There are still a bunch of things that bug me though. For example, I still canât get over how the kanji questions appear in smaller text than the vocabulary questions now, which looks really amateurish.
The biggest issue though is that the popups when you get a question right or wrong that show you the new SRS level are now hard to read. It looks like they start out dark purple for some reason and slowly fade in to the normal green/red color. The upshot is that the majority of the time, I advance to the next question without seeing the popup and have no idea when I got it right or wrong or what the new SRS level is.
Itâs not even like theyâre that slow, just slow enough to be useless. The same is true of the cards at the bottom that you can open up to see the right answer. They donât take that long to appear, but it is still slow enough that I often advance to the next question before seeing the answer, even when I specifically pressed the key to open it up after missing a question. Of course when I genuinely didnât know the answer, Iâll just wait for it, but if I think I already what I got wrong, Iâll often just skip it. Itâs hard to remember exactly how things were before, but I donât recall ever seeing that before. Before, even if I was pretty sure what the right answer was, I would open it up just to double check.
Sometimes I wonder whether it is not that these even got slower but that advancing to the next question got faster, but thereâs no way to know for sure, and the garish and unreadable color transitions on the popups after answering a question are certainly new.
Incidentally, I was wrong about the information card you can open at the bottom now just being a straight copy of the webpage you can go to outside of reviews, e.g. https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/ĺ°˝ĺ. On closer inspection, they are actually different, which makes it even weirder that they would change it, since theyâre not saving code that way. The new review-bottom cards still seemed to be designed to just have the relevant information, theyâre just a lot less compact than the old ones for no good reason, requiring more scrolling to see information.
The other major thing is that I got new lessons for the first time today, so I got to see what the new lesson screens looks like as well. In the past, I would almost always know that new lessons were coming after a review because I would see that I guruâd the relevant kanji when I answered it during the review, but now there is effectively no feedback during reviews, so it was a complete surprise.
Overall, lessons arenât too bad, but I did get to see the removal of the enter key on lesson cards that Iâd read about. For some reason, they decided that using enter to advance between lesson cards clashes with âexpected browser behaviorâ and made everyone use the right arrow instead. However, you still have to use enter to advance after each question while doing the lesson reviews and to advance on the post review screen. Itâs a very trivial issue in practice, but the transition is a bit weird.
On the bright side, it sounds like there have been some minor graphical fixes at least. Going by the feedback (i.e. complaint) thread, there was initially a distracting thick black border around the answer input box, which they have now changed to an unobtrusive light blue.
