Damn this is quite the set up! But yeh for sure, being able to read with a better screen aspect for manga makes such a difference.

As one of the thread’s prominent 薬屋 readers, I wonder if you could give an estimation of how difficult it is as a read? I feel like I still need to prepare myself for it with a few more kid’s books and suchlike given I had such difficulty with a basic fantasy light novel. I read the first manga volume a few years ago and struggled with… well, everything, but especially the pharmacology and Imperial Chinese terminology. But maybe it’s easier with the instant lookups?

Not tons of reading today. Had to get up early to prepare for my ハーフ大会, and then played board games with friends for several hours while lying in a pit of physical pain. Have been trying to pick at reading while recovering ever since.
Tomorrow I’ll have a few hours to do nothing else but read. Should get quite a bit done.
I’ve actually been trying to read more in general this year, but as I get closer to level 30 on WK, I get curious to see how much easier reading in Japanese has gotten…
Currently playing through Pokemon Scarlet.

I read some pages Dーダーク・ロード 2―吸血鬼ハンター 11 and done a N1 mock test.
About reading 薬屋
Before 薬屋, I completed only a couple of novels: Kiki, Harry Potter 1, 本好き1and 本好き spinoff.
It is considerably more difficult than all these books, but to me not because of the vocabulary (I’m using the instant lookup), but more due to indirectness and occasionally obscure story-telling style. I watched anime and read manga in English, so it helped me to get used to the style and vocab before I plunged into unknown. I think that it started to feel OK after several chapters. Having said that, I still sometimes have to reread some pieces couple of times to understand what’s going on (although it happens not that often).
but especially the pharmacology and Imperial Chinese terminology. But maybe it’s easier with the instant lookups?
Imperial Chinese terminology and formal/stilyzed grammar stick rather well, because it is repeated over and over again, so it ceases to be an issue. Fungi/herbs/insects terms sometimes mentioned only couple of times, it might be a bother if you don’t use instant lookups.

Today’s sessions went more smoothly and featured one of my favourite parts of the current scene – love seeing the doctor rip apart chief Kondou over having, as he puts it, a “trade fair” full of injured and sick people in the compound. Seriously, how did the Shinsengumi (in this story) even get this far with like 30-50% of the warriors sitting out missions left and right due to yet another preventable stomach ache epidemic or something?

About reading 薬屋 cc: lifev
I agree. For me it was a lot of lookups and it took time, but eventually you learn the vocab and get used to the grammar. Sometimes there are words where BookWalker wouldn’t allow me to pick up the text - turns out it was literal Chinese characters/hanzi which I mentioned here (no spoilers).
Also here’s a post where Naphthalene wrote about the difficulty.

I’ve read quite a lot today! :3 Wuiii. I don’t think I’ve seen 烏滸がましい written with kanji before, so that was a new learning.
I’ve already watched the anime once, so that helps with the context, but it’s still hard to read because of the grammar and vocabulary. It took me almost 15 hours to read 7%.
Another Persona fan? That’s cool!
Yeah! I’ve noticed that since I watched horimiya, I was able to pick up conversation and context easily thanks to that! it’s impressive and good job for sticking with it!
And DUHH persona is goated!

I was sick and tired and only read manga magazines.
So I fell behind on updating these threads last weeks, but luckily I didn’t fall behind on actually reading and immersing, so here’s a bulk update for last week

薬屋のひとりごと 6: 00.00% → 7.70%, 1h35m
Started a new volume! Prologue is as crazy as an epilogue. Jinshi, Basen, and Ah-Duo… It is painful and funny at the same time. Basen, be strong! The story of the evel step sister continues, I’m very curious who is behind all of this. Feels complicated.
風立ちぬ ~9 pages, 0h55m
I think that I’m more or less got used to the language. But the story is so sad
Thanks @lifev and @Redglare for the thoughts on 薬屋. I think I’ll just have to dive in and see after I finished this Ace Attorney case - probably not going to be for a month in any event. The club should help, though I might just peek in and decide I’m not at its level just yet, but even that is fine - it’s a goal to work towards, after all.

- Pushing on with 逆転裁判, spoke to two witnesses. Cowboy was annoying as usual but since he’s being a bit more information-focused it was a little easier to decipher. Now poking around another crime scene.
- Started and finished the week’s Bocchi chapters. Fun to read this with the club since spreading it out makes it less tiring. But also glad I’ve improved, as I remember reading Bocchi 1 being very, very difficult the first time I tried it…
- Started Sweetness and Lightning 10, on track to wrap the series early this year. Really one of my fave comfort reads.
