Very little reading time this morning! Read p. 157-162 of よつばと! Vol. 3. Vocab:
当てにする: あてにする: to count on, to rely on
連れてくる: つれてくる: to bring someone along
ちびっこ: little kid
ナマイキ: impertinent, cheeky
物体: ぶったい: object, body
一応: いちおう: more or less, technically
Wuiiii, got to read quite a bit
There’s not much action yet tho, the book is kinda slow. So much politics, being in the right clique or not is becoming an even bigger part of the plot now that one of ロゼマイン’s older brothers is going to marry a lady from another area. What I want more of is magic, romance and comedy.

Read about 12k characters of Chaos;Head. I’m really tired today; my wife and I had to spend hours trying to get our insurance to cover labwork they very clearly should that we were being charged 4,000 dollars for because the lab apparently arbitrarily charged it as if we were in a completely different state, making us appear out of network. I hate it here a lot! Happy day after the 4th of July!
Hoping I can read more later cause I’m not doing enough today but we’ll see, kinda exhausted.
Read to the first decision point in survival escape game. The beginning was a bit of a slog from all the informational scene setting, but the adventure has finally started, yay! Enjoyed sounding out the katakana names for various South American countries and stuff too.
Didn’t read much on July 4th as I was out a fair bit, but today I took advantage of the unusually long weekend to do a load of reading (as I plan to do for the next 2 days as well), before a probably fairly busy week of working hard next week.
Planning to read 鹿の王4 next. It’s always nice to be close to the end of a series!
Made it up to the start of the 7th dungeon today. I had to look up a guide for part of this because one section just lets you loose out into the world with no direction to find 4 gems hidden in random spots. (I’ve given up on listening while playing, full focus mode now)
Also felt like doing a test read for something new today, so I tried out the beginning of a pretty famous early 2000s yuri light novel series. Read went well! I had to re-remember how to format things the way I like them in ttsu for it, but after I got that set up it was pretty smooth. Lots of fancy words and flowery descriptions, but I was pretty pleased with what I could understand. Level 28 is probably under-selling it, since it does have a lot of the hoity toity language that feels pretty similar to parts of 桜蘭高校ホスト部, but still readable.
The more I read on other sites the less I like reading on bookwalker, I think. For manga it’s generally been fine, but for books there’s a bunch of little stuff that really irks me: not being able to search the text, not being able to copy/paste from the text itself for flashcards or grammar googling, the delay when trying to highlight words to then highlight again to look up with yomichan, needing to relog and refresh the page every time I want to read…
Big relate to that. So far I’ve only used Bookwalker for reading books, but I’m currently reading Honzuki with ttsu and it’s such a smooth reading experience in comparison. Especially comparing the process of lookups, as you mentioned, doing so on Bookwalker is a mess. Another thing is how long it takes for the next page to load. I can’t believe how slow it is (I hope it’s not just me and my devices/wifi). For example flipping through pages just to get a feel for how long a chapter is… I feel like it just increases the resistance unnecessarily when reading is an activity which already takes effort of its own. そんなサイトに萎えるわ。
Edit: At least that’s what I feel regarding the website version. The app version doesn’t have that delay when flipping through pages. Instead there’s a delay every time you go out of the app and back again, as it takes a few seconds to sync bookmarks and such, so I tend to turn off wifi momentarily to get around that. And because of the resyncing it’s imperative to have a dictionary app like takoboto with offline search function and/or having the function of opening the dictionary app on top of the bookwalker app so it doesn’t register as going out of the app because that’d set off the resyncing process. I think it’s possible to turn off sync, but I tend to switch between devices often. So at least for the app there are workarounds to the delays.
Today I finished Chapter 5, and finally it feels like the plot is advancing. It’s probably my longest reading day yet; I guess since VNs show you only one line at the time it feels less intimidating?
Revisited よつばと! chapter 1 for my close reading using the book club thread. It was helpful for me because it explained things like こねぇ/くんな ; どっから ; ~てしまう → ちゃう that I otherwise probably would have had trouble finding by myself (or at least finding how it’s used in the context of the manga panel).
After which, I could more easily read chapter 2 once I familiarized myself with the vocabulary list that was provided (frontloading vocabulary ftw). And yes, 留守番 did come up again! Super cool to see it just a few days after reading the Chihuahua story. I don’t think I’ll be forgetting it anytime soon.
Found that I had Kanji Learner’s Course Graded Reading Sets, Vol. 1: Kanji 1-100 in my Kindle library. Tried to read. Understood why my past self stopped reading at chapter 2. Concluded that I will revisit this another day lmao. I don’t think I’m familiar enough with Japanese sentence patterns at this point to get anything out of this right now.
Day 6! About 14k characters of Chaos;Head so far. I’d like to be spending the time to hit 20+, but this is still alright I suppose. Today was a trickier than average day with a lot of (very gross, gory) descriptions and frequent context changes. Along those lines, here’s a new word: 血飛沫 (ちしぶき), a blood spray or fountain of blood.
I added on a chapter of ダンダダン last night, but not getting in as much extra reading as I’d like beyond what I post, recently.
