2500 characters from Island
today, plus a little textbook reading. Funny how easy the textbook is after reading a few hundred thousand characters from a VN! ![]()
Happy birthday!
July 30th!
Started reading Volume 2 of Frieren today, and read the first chapter.
Also read 2 pages of the Orange Light Novel.

Didn’t manage to do a huge amount of reading yesterday, but I am just casually re-reading Horimiya, which was the first manga I attempted back with the ABBC in October when I was a lowly level 6 on Wanikani.
I remember some of the sentences being absolutely solid, and thinking I would never be able to understand them and I couldn’t figure out what was vocab, what was conjugation, what was a grammar point, but now they pose almost no issues at all.
It’s a nice reminder of how far I’ve come, and a nice motivator to stick at this even when content feels almost incomprehensible some days.
Also started adding a few common words to Anki in preparation for FMA this weekend! Figured being able to read 錬金術師 is a good place to start ![]()

July summary:
31 chapters of Human Japanese Intermediate completed (missed one day, but doubled up on another)
31 episodes of 壁の穴 (up to episode #33 having started last challenge)
It’s cool that it’s easier for you now! I’ve been thinking I need to do this too, because Horimiya felt soooo tough when I read it with the club.

didn’t do any of my main reads in favour of reading the whole of 光が死んだ夏 5 instead and i regret none of it. now just to wait for volume 6… my english read now is one last song by nathan evans, a short-ish romance between two older men at a retirement home. see how it goes, ig?
I guess it’s time to start tackling all this native material that got piled up.
(still didn’t come back from vacation and not really sure what to read for these two months but Feeling The Urge To Commit To Something)
This homepost is to be beautified once I return home, but I think I’ll read some 三ツ星カラーズ and some stuff from Satori Reader in the meantime starting Tomorrow.
(also, can watching anime with subtitles be considered reading? cuz with my listening comprehension it’s reading mostly haha)

I had a very busy week, where I only read the minimum each day to not break the chain, and then the last few days I was reading before bed and I never got to updating the post here.
7月21-27日: read a single episode of Satori Reader’s Trees of Happiness each day (except on the 23, when I read two episodes)
7月28-31日: got back to LOOPERS, and I am now past the halfway point!

| 7月29日 | 2.2k | 60.1k (~47%) |
| 7月30日 | 2.4k | 62.5k (~48%) |
| 7月31日 | 4.1k | 66.7k (~52%) |
I was aiming to complete LOOPERS by the end of this challenge, but now the FMA book club is starting and I am very tempted…

Last day of July - that’s 4 months of reading every day. Reading Island really feels easier now! Still not easy, not at all, but at least a little easier. 5000 characters from Island
today.
Definitely worth it, even if you just flip through! One nice benefit I’m finding is I’m picking up on some additional new words that my brain must have just skipped at the time because it was too overwhelmed. It feels like it’s now hitting that nice 90-95% comprehensive that people recommend.

July summary:
This month, not counting manga, I’ve read Honzuki 17, 18 and 39% of 19. That’s 381+381+0,39*403 = 919-ish pages. That’s 230 pages per week. I don’t usually count pages read per month or week, but I know that for my total yearly page and book goal, my current pace is too slow.
…Challenge accepted

End of the first month! Looking back, my first thought is that I am a little disappointed that I didn’t read all that much most days. Then again, the last time I read this consistently was in 2022, so I’ve made big strides in reconnecting with an old hobby. I hope I can ramp up the quantity a bit in August.
I find long-form text especially challenging to keep up, but some of my most rewarding reading has been with the Profoundly Weird Book Club in the past, so I really want to get back to enjoying novels again. Perhaps non-fiction isn’t exciting enough to keep my attention for more than half an hour. Let’s hope 変な家 is as riveting as the blurb made it sound ![]()
